Nice weather led to steep drops, and the openers stayed behind my expectations, too. What an awful PTA for a Woody Allen movie … at least, Chantal im Märchenland had already a lot of admissions from the first two weekends, so definitely a success!
In Austria, similar numbers, but with KFP4 in #3 instead of BtB. KFP4 has crossed 200k admissions by now but the Golden Ticket is out of reach.
Next weekend: insidekino.de already has estimates; Chantal safe in #1 with about 200k; #2/3 is close between Back to Black and opener Civil War. Generally, with rainy and cold weather, family releases should recover from last week's drops.

Ok weekend with a decent hold for domestic comedy Chantal im Märchenland in #1; Godzilla x Kong openend within expectations, among openers, Monkey Man was the negative surprise. Le Dernier Jaguar has finally crossed 1mil total, nice!
In Austria, similar numbers but KFP4 was #2 and Godzilla #3; Dune2 was over 299k total after Sunday so it has the Golden Ticked bagged by now - congratulations!
Next weekend: Back To Black has some promotion and should become the biggest opener, maybe even Top3 material - The First Omen has also some potential but probably less than Amy.

A fine OW for Chantal im Märchenland and good holds for most releases - nice weekend, once more higher than the corresponding one from '23.
In Austria, Chantal was #1 with a very similar OW; KFP4 #2 and Dune2 #3 (KFP was already very close to 160k after Sunday … mucht stronger than Germany).
Next weekend: Godzilla x Kong will be the big opener - I can't see it dethroning Chantal but #2 should be easily possible.
- 3
- 2
-
early weekend estimates for Germany from insidekino.de:
#1: Chantal - 700k (surprisingly high)
#2/3: Dune2 / KFP4 with 200k each (-22%)
#4: Ghostbusters5 - 120k (-28%)
#5: ZoneOfInterest - 50k
That's a satisfying weekend if these numbers come true; what's missing is the big rabbit-themed family movie which usually generates some afternoon business around Easter but otherwise really fine numbers.

One more satisfying weekend with an extremely close race for #1, good holds and two ok openers. Kung Fu Panda 4 dropped only 13% (but family releases were very strong anyway, as witnessed by the increases for Le Dernier Jaguar and Migration) and Dune 2 has crossed 2mil total with another sub-30% drop. The 5th Ghostbusters movie opened better than #4 and above my expectations, and french comedy Cocorico was off to an ok start but might catch on. The Zone of Interest had its first drop but is still on the level of its OW - super.
In Austria, KFP4 was #1 again, dropping the same 13% as in Germany but from a higher level, it's already >100k admissions after WE2. Dune 2 and Ghostbusters 5 were about on the same level as Germany (Dune now >250k after the weekend) but Cocorico opened a lot better, already near 15k after ist first WE. On #5 and #6 we had Andrea lässt sich scheiden (has now crossed 150k total) and Anyone But You (has crossed 250k but with no chance for the Golden Ticket). Migration however has finally broken this 300k treshold - congratulations!
Next weekend: A domestic #1 should be safe with Chantal im Märchenland, a tie-in to the extremely successful "Fack Ju Göhte"-comedies. While the last of those came out in 2017, they're still popular and something like a 5-600k OW wouldn't surprise me. Also opening: Wicked Little Letters, Club Zero and One Life. My guess is that Ghostbusters will get hit harder than Dune, but overall, business should see a fine uptick!

actuals tomorrow but obviously, Sunday was much stronger than expected for nearly all releases - Po&Paul with roughly 255k each!

-
final estimates have Po and Paul head-to-head with 240k admissions each

If he knows all the possible futures then wouldn't he also know how to prevent it? How to prevent millions from dying? Why can't he escape from destiny? Terminator taught me "There's no fate but what we make for ourselves".
It's not as if he isn't trying. And he succeeds (kind of), at least in the books, in that he removes himself from the picture as far as possible. But like when a dam bursts, there's only very little one can do to influence the disasterous course of the flood. And Paul, while removing himself, just manages to put the weight in someone elses hands (his children's). In fact, most of the later Dune books (starting with God Emperor) are about how Leto tries to escape from the forces of history.

early weekend estimates from insidekino.de, no big surprises:
#1: Dune 2 - 255k (-29%, nice)
#2: KFP 4 - 230k (-23%, wow)
#3: Ghostbusters 5 - 150k (better than I expected)
#4: Zone of Interest - 85k (-23%, its first drop)
#5: Cocorico - 75k incl. some previews

A good weekend - and a lot stronger than the corresponding one last year, finally!
Dune 2 had an excellent hold, it's still 75% ahead of the first on and having better holds, so I think 3,5mil total are the goal atm. Kung Fu Panda 4 was also improving a lot from ist predecessors; 1,5mil total should be easily doable and depending on WOM it can of course get to 2mil. Imaginary opened higher than Miller's Girl but both had a so-so PTA. And The Zone of Interest is a phenomenon; seems to have crazy good WOM so I can see it getting to 1mil total, a big success for such an arthousey release! Farther down the chart, some old releases got re-expansions and managed to add to their totals (Poor Things has now crossed 500k)
In Austria, #1 and 2 were reversed as KFP4 opened to #1; it's already over 60k total so stronger than in Germany. Dune 2 dropped steeper than in Germany (-32%) but it was already at 208k total after Sunday, so basically head-to-head. On #3 we had domestic dramedy Andrea lässt sich scheiden which was at 142k total after Sunday but was down to 10,8k admissons in its 4th weekend so 200k are probably out of reach - still, a surprising success! On #4 longrunning Anyone But You (by now at 247k total, much stronger than Germany); on #5 and 6 Imaginary and Miller's Girl which opened about head-to-head as in Germany. The Zone of Interest was only #7, total is now a bit over 20k - that's one of the rare releases where Germany is pulling ahead!

final weekend estimates from insidekino.de, everything goes up
#1: Dune 2 - 350k (-28%)
#2: KFP 4 - 400k incl. PV
#3: Zone of Interest - 110k (+14%)
- 7
- 2

At least at my theater, Dune2 is holding up extremely well on Saturday, playing the two biggest screens near capacity. Would not be surprised about a <30% drop
-
Saturday update from insidekino.de has Dune2 now at 340k (-31%); contrary to the first two weekends where it went down with updates - either MarkG has accounted for the stronger-than-usual Thursdays by now, or it had better Friday numbers than before. Either way, Dune2 will be >1,9 mil by Sunday and might overtake Dune1's total even before weekend #4 begins.
- 5
-
first estimates for Germany's WE from insidekino.de :
#1; Dune2 - 325k (-34%)
#2: Kung Fu Panda 4 - 350k incl. previews
#3: Zone of Interest - 100k (another increase, when will it stop?!)
that's an ok hold for Dune2 (the first one dropped steeper in week 3 but that was against No Time To Die's OW) and a fine opening for KFP4, much better than nr.3 so the franchise is very much alive!
sadly, besides those three, there's a lack in attractive releases, nothing else >50k. In Austria, Andrea lässt sich scheiden is still popular, should stay on #3

a nice fact from Germany: with the pre-awards push, Barbie has finally crossed 6mil admissions!
(in Austria, it has crossed 800k a while ago, so even more successful)

Nice weekend (even if we're still down compared to last year). Dune 2 with a fine hold - Dune 1 was at 792k after the 2nd WE, so it's ahead by >70% - I can see it getting near 3,5mil total. And The Zone of Interest even had an increase, astonishing - let's see how far it can get! Also an excellent opening for documentation Wunderland, and Kung Fu Panda 4 hat nearly 90k previews on Sunday! Biopic La Nouvelle Femme was also pretty strong (more screens than I had guessed).
In Austria, the weekend was even stronger - Dune 2 fell only 15% and was at nearly 156k after Sunday; Andrea lässt sich scheiden continues its strong run and was at 122k and Anyone But You was #3 and hit 238k total, much stronger than in Germany! Migration should hit 300k total on Thursday, also way ahead of Germany.
Next weekend: Despite having burnt some demand with those Sunday previews, Kung Fu Panda 4 should have a fine OW - it may become a close race for #1 with Dune 2. Also opening, on a smaller scale: Miller's Girl (very low presales).

Early weekend estimates for Germany from insidekino.de:
#1: Dune 2 - 515k admissions (-15%, that would be insane if true)
#2: The Zone of Interest - 90k (even a slight increase!, also insane)
#3: La Nouvelle Femme - 80k (strong)
and doc Wunderland (which I didn't mention at all) about the Hamburg attraction is also opening really strong with 60k
So, overall a fine weekend! Additionally, Kung Fu Panda 4 is having a lot of preview shows on Sunday
Even if those 15% drop for Dune2 might be overly optimistic, it's way above the first one's OW - nice!

Any predictions for Zone of Interest's final total?
none at all, I have no idea why the OW was this big or the PTA that high ... usually such a movie might come in around 150-200k total I'd say, but that's obviously much too low in this case.

A strong opening by Dune 2 - that's about 75% increase from the first one! Of course it's too early to be sure but 3mil total look very likely and with the good reception it's getting, I'm hoping for a bit more. And an even stronger opening (going by expectations) for The Zone of Interest; that's a badass PTA for such a release - I have no idea how that happened, maybe a lot of school shows? Good for the market though; despite the fine openers the overall market is down once more compared to last year (which was already dreadful).
In Austria, once more, a much stronger weekend. While The Zone of Interest opened only half as strong as in Germany (meaning: in line with expectations), most other releases were doing better - Dune 2 was at 76,5k on Sunday, Anyone But You and Le Dernier Jaguar were still in the 5-digit range, Wonka has now crossed 350k total - but the most impressive release atm is domestic Andrea lässt sich scheiden which had nearly 32k again (3day), a drop of only 14% from an already astonishing OW on a weekend with a massive opener! It was already at 89k total on Sunday which means it's even getting about 5k admissions each weekday!
Next weekend: Thriller comedy Drive-Away Dolls might get a few admissions, as might biopic La Nouvelle femme about Maria Montessori (persumably with school shows), but this week's Top3 should stay on top. The big question, of course, is, how well Dune 2 can hold in its 2nd weekend - a 35% drop would put it around 400k which would still top the first one's OW - let's keep those fingers crossed!

Early weekend estimates for Germany from insidekino.de:
#1: Dune 2 - 775k incl previews (a bit better than I expected, verrry nice)
#2: The Zone of Interest - 95k (also excellent)
#3: Eine Million Minuten - 65k (-44%)
So, Dune2 off to an excellent start. I've seen it on Wednesday, it's really worth the ticket for the big screen and badass sound system. With the positive reviews and comments it's getting, 3mil total in Germany should be doable and I'm hoping for 4mil to be honest.

wow.
just came back - what a movie, what a theatrical experience. After the first one was received favourably and became a mid-sized hit, I see this doing much better - at least doubling the first one's gross. This is epic filmmaking at its finest and really worth a ticket; there are very few home theater systems fit for Dune2

Bad weekend … at least, there were >20 releases over 10k. Wonka crossed 2,5mil total, Migration 2,0mil - fine! An Eine Million Minuten had a fine hold once more, a medium-sized hit in the making.
In Austria, a much better weekend - thanks mainly to domestic dramedy Andrea lässt sich scheiden; Josef Hader's second directorial work opened on #1 with nearly 37k admissions (incl. previews even a bit over). Also >10k were Le Dernier Jaguar and Anyone But You (which is now at 210k total), and the Disney sing-a-long event sold also better than in Germany. The Beekeeper should reach 150k total - also a nice medium-sized hit.

Winter is back, and admissions went up - fine overall weekend even if there was no big opener; Chantal passed 2mil total, Kung Fu Panda 4 1,5mil - nice!
I haven't yet got Austria's actuals but the weekend should have played out in a very similar way since weather conditions were the same.
Next weekend: Once more, no big openers - Challengers as well as Arthur the King have very low presales, and with weather turning better, expect bad news from the boxoffice … well, Dune2 should hit 3mil total, that's probably next week's highlight!
edit: Now Austria's numbers are online; weekend was a bit better than in Germany; KFP4 has now crossed 200k
