A drop of almost 65% from the first film would be a little disappointing. At least it's starting from a very high base and a drop that size would still be essentially a billion.
Disappointment is not equal to a flop.

A flop by BOF'S standards? Yes. Be prepared for the inevitable WWW thread.
By studios standards? Nah.

In retrospect I've decided that this is a movie that belongs towards the bottom of films in Nolan's catalogue. I hate having to rate this film but I give it a B. I'll post some detailed thoughts at some point if I can ever wrap my head around why I feel this way.

Twinsies.
Note: I'm pretty sure it's not his best, but I can't decide if this is a masterpiece or "meh."
Well I was being a little bit facetious as The Prestige is my favourite movie of all time so to replace it as my favourite Nolan film it would have to become my favourite film which isn't going to happen.
Nolan is such an ambitious film maker howerver and regardless of my eventual feelings on this film, I would still much rather give him 200~ Million to make a movie than any other director in the world. He is never afraid to dream a little bit bigger darling, which in Hollywood is a very rare commodity indeed.

Die Hard = 10
Die Hard 2 = 6.5

Die Hard 5 = 2
Average = 6.8
The fact that Die Hard 5 exists drags down its average massively!

I consider Gravity and Avatar to fall from the same tree to be honest. Both are better movie experiences, then movies IMO.

Has any movie eclipsed it in terms of visual effects yet? Despite my gripes with it from a plot perspective, it really is a stunning looking and immersive film.

Also this was a great teaser tailer for Godzilla (1998)

The movie might be dull (I would have to see it again). But the debate is pretty much over. If you haven't changed your mind yet, then you won't be persuaded to now.
The debate is over you say????

The whole situation just seems very weird. If you are going to shut-down a website and absorb it into its sister website, the professional thing to do is to announce it ahead of time, and make everyone aware of what is happening.
If you have technical issues the professional thing to do is to make a public announcement about the problems and explain you are working hard to get it back up and running.
No matter the underlying cause for BOM's temporary disappearance it is clear that Amazon simply doesn't give a fuck about the website anymore or they would treat it, and its viewers with a little bit more professional respect. BOM may be up again for now, and it may stay up for a long long time, but as of now I have zero reason to expect that it will continue existing for any reasonable length of time given how little they seem to care about it.

as long as the internwt archive exists, yes. It doesnt purge old sites.

I think to many people the idea of 'well I enjoyed X movie better, but Y is the better movie' to be a ridiculous idea. For many, movies are simply about enjoyment and therefore that statement makes no sense what so ever. If you enjoyed movie X better than Y then X MUST be the better movie for you. It's also why some will call someone pretentious if they say something like 'You are wrong when you say Citizen Kane is one of the worst movies of all time'. If it' all about enjoyment then your opinion is just as valid as theirs. It would be like getting upset that someone considers an apple to taste better than a grape. Each persons individual tastes are different and who are you to say that one food is tastier than the other?
But, you can compare food in other ways. It's quite possible to call one food 'better' than another for example if you compare their nutritional value. You can break down the elements of an apple and a grape and say that this food is better than that food in providing nutrients in this particular area. And while breaking down a movie is certainly less of an exact science then breaking down nutritional readings, I still feel it can absolutely be done. You can look at the camera work and point out why this particular shot works well at setting the mood or communicating a particular idea. You can analyse the script and reel of reasons why this particular character has great depth or is written in a shallow manner. You can look at the acting involved and explain why this particular actor grabbed you or why he failed to draw you in. And so on and so on. And while there is a degree of subjectivity involved, that doesn't mean that all opinions are equal. Those who study the art of cinema are going to be more apt at describing why this particular film either works or it doesn't work. And those who have not studied as much are going to be less able to do so.
So ultimately it really depends on what you are looking at as to what determines if a movie is good or bad. If you simply looking at films as a means of entertainment then its a completely subjective experience and saying Citizen Kane is shit is just as valid an opinion as saying its amazing. However if films are not all about entertainment to you and you are willing to look at a movie and break it down, then saying Citizen Kane is a shit movie...well I'm really not sure how you could justify that opinion.

The ultimate IMDB vote discussion, is it rigged?
in The Speakeasy
Posted · Edited by Spottswoode
No it's not rigged. But fanboy's can and do run amok and you have to take into account the biases of the average person that winds up on a website like IMDB.
With that said, its top 250 movies of all time is as good a place as any to start exploring film if you have a lifetime of movies to catch up on.
It's a guide, not a gospel.
