  1. There's going to be an inherent difference between content where 80% is being rendered/created on the fly versus purely native content.

That's what you might think but have you done a blind test?

I own a mid class projector and let me tell you, between what i get in my home and the Hobbit in theaters, i have a hard time telling the difference.

Pretty much everybody who was against frame interpolation wasn't won over by Hobbit. And i doubt Trumbull's process will change that either. Once you get to crazy high fps the differences are negligible.

  2. I have no horse in this race, but I would say as someone who greatly admires Cameron that I think it's a shame he decided to do another God knows how many sequels to Avatar than move onto something totally new. Avatar was a fine enough experience in the cinema but my interest in returning to that world and those characters is practically non-existent. I wonder how long it'll be before we get another non-Avatar Cameron film....

As an ardent defender of Avatar i do have to kinda agree with this sentiment. I love Avatar but if i had to chose between sequels and for instance Battle Angel i would have chosen the latter. I dunno what he can bring to the table to make it fresh and interesting from a story perspective, it doesn't seem like there are a lot of options, so humans come back and instigate another war? Troubles in Jake and Neytiri's marriage? Avatar could have stayed a standalone movie without me feeling that i'm missing something. Then again, i'm sure it's gonna be an epic event i wouldn't wanna miss. It's James frigging Cameron we are talking about here.

  3. On the whole, I would say yes, though obviously BSG has far better VFX. The first couple of seasons of BSG are arguably superior, but the show did start to fizzle out toward the end. The strength is B5 is the on-going story: while each episode (for the most part) is constructed like a stand-alone ep (at the time, arcs on TV were considered verboten), the B-stories in even the lesser episodes often contain key moments and continuations of the greater story, so as you watch, it's like one giant tapestry coming together.Combine that with the fact that it's a very mythic and grand show with remarkably vigorous worldbuilding (JMS has repeatedly said one of his inspirations was LOTR) and the cumulative effect is very strong. The ending of the finale is powerful stuff.

BSG and B5, two of my favorite TV shows. :)
