From bom 49,730,000 ÷18,700,000 =2.6593582888
Hmm, from an article in Variety it opened to 18.1m.
-
TH1 had 2.66 x OW
Wasn't it 2.76x?
-
Nope. It's not gonna get a 3x multiplier. More like 2x.
Okay, i checked, AUJ had a multiplier of almost 2.8x. With the same multi and $34m opening, DOS would finish with close to $95m.
Sounds too good to be true...

Let's wait for official studio numbers. Wouldn't be the first time they don't match early estimates...

For the last page or two people have been talking about DOS' opening being about 50-60% higher than AUJ's, you just need set aside a minute and read.

Go, Hobbit!

The best HOBBIT trailer remains the very first teaser promoting the whole project.
Nope. The DOS internet trailer kicks its ass so bad it's not even funny. The hype was there because it was the first ever footage from Hobbit. I remember back then thinking "that was lackluster".

I wouldn't say those movies were made only for OS audiences but OS money is important for sure. Yes, they don't get as much from the pie OS but what they get is still in many cases more than what they make stateside.

Thx for all your answers, guys.
This forum is still the best.
Wow, so polite?
-
Closer to Taylor Kitsch and Val Kilmer.
Maybe those 2 will star in the next (straight to DVD) JR movie.
No, they just need to star in better movies. Had Affleck starred in Shadow Agent, i don't think it would have fared any better.

I'm not angry, at all. Just baffled.

Watching Her a second time. I was obviously in the wrong mood the first time. Totes falling in love with the movie. Think I'm gonna cry at some point.
How can you watch a movie and write on a forum at the same time? You are butchering the movie watching experience. Oh, right, you are the one who also don't mind ads during movies...
-
Kal would say otherwise..
Avengers 2 will decrease as well.
-
Right. And that's my point. Logic says this should decrease, but logic doesn't apply to James Cameron. So anything is in play for this movie. For now, I see it hitting about 650m (don't fault me for that.. it's still an incredible total) and matching its overseas run. End of the day, I see this hitting around 2.6 billion. That's illogical, but somehow not crazy because of Cameron's genius.
While Cameron is God (imho) logic WILL apply here. Titanic was an unknown, Avatar was an unknown, Avatar 2 is a sequel and not a sequel to a little film called Terminator. While sequels tend to be more of a safe bet they also lack the freshness, the excitement of the "new" and hence i feel the max potential a sequel can gross is lower. Avatar 2 WILL decrease, domestically as well as overseas, and i don't mean like "minimum $550m domestically", it could go further down. It wouldn't surprise me at all if it fails to hit $2b worldwide. No shame, it would still be a MASIVE hit.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
$135.4 million / $209 million
$97.4 million [56 markets] ($278.4 million) / $406 million
$99.7 million [62 markets] ($424.8 million) / $616.1 million
$58 million [64 markets] ($527 million) / $756.6 million
$22.2 million [62 markets] ($566 million) / $802.8 million (Est.)
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
$138 million / $222.6 million
$96 million [59 markets] ($288.5 million) / $438.6 million
$106.5 million [62 markets] ($464 million) / $686.7 million
$57.1 million [65 markets] ($561 million) / $824.8 million
$26.2 million ($609.3 million) / $887.5 million -
Let's take AUJ: it made $48m that week for a total of $609m. It ended its run in those market with $664m, so it added another $55m, that's 1.15x the $48m. If we apply that to DOS: 1.15 x 39m = 45m, so that gives us $610m. It needs to make $90m from China and Japan.
-
I know. I took that into account.
-
Doable but difficult. It's $43m behind AUJ and i fear the gap is only going to get bigger. It's probably going to have to outgross AUJ by over $20m in Japan and China combined in order to hit $700m.
-
Unlike last week, this is one that could have done better.
$39m for the whole week compared to $48m that AUJ made.
-
I was surprised by his quality, considering it is from Syfy. I have already seen the first 3 episodes and liked it. The potential is huge. Check the thread in the TV Shows forum.
Is that the new show from Battlestar Galactica's Ron Moore? Then i'm not surprised by its quality.

At least it managed to gain a few millions on AUJ overseas last week, you gotta be satisfied with that.

I kinda don't like it breaking out in China. Now it's gonna miss $1b only by a hair, which makes it suck that much more.
