So they're going back to december for 'The Hobbit' ? The second one did even worse than the first in that late february-early march slot so it isn't that surprising. And this time it won't be facing 'One Piece Z' so perhaps will it at least manage to save face and be the highest grossing of the three.

Marnie OD admissions is about 10% stronger than Kaguya hime..
So around 350 million yen for the weekend if this holds. What a flop...

As someone who dislikes 3D I'm glad Studio Ghibli (and japanese studios in general) are sticking to 2D animation. Sometimes I even wish studios would have stuck with cel animation : there's far more warmth in that kind of animation imo.

Interesting. 'Youkai Watch' is indeed consistently getting better ratings on tv than Pokemon too (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2014-07-02/japan-animation-tv-ranking-june-16-22/.76113 , http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2014-06-15/japan-animation-tv-ranking-june-2-8/.75599). Maybe 'Toho' will finally get their 4th annual hit franchise.
Or it could en up pulling an 'Inazuma Eleven'.

The Pokemon franchise has really lost its strengh in Japan in recent years. It's now on par if not below the Doraemon and Detective Conan franchises where as it used to blow them out of the water easily just a few years ago. And neither Doraemon or Detective Conan have the 'new generation' gimmick either.

Pokemon won't have much influence on the box office imo (at least not the other major movies). It's kind of just there, always attracting the same 3-3.5 million people during its run year after year (maybe slightly more this year because it's the first movie of a new generation) without much impact on other big releases. 'Memories of Marnie' however is another matter, not to mention it has female protagonists as does 'Maleficient' so they might be attracting the same crowd.

Is it really above Pokemon?
The films are distributed by Tokyo Theaters, co, so they just barely receive a wide release. I don't know much about the company, but I'm assuming they only play their films within the Tokyo area.

How come 'Anpanman' movies are so unsuccessful when the merchandise keeps selling like crazy with the character brand beating the likes of Pokemon or Pretty Cure every single year ? You'd expect box office grosses at least on par with those of the Pretty Cure movies.

Corpse, I saw that you posted the Doraemon grosses on KJ...the early grosses seem relatively small given the amount of admissions. Were tickets really that much cheaper in the 80s ? Admissions that much higher ? And to what extent ?

Top OW of 2014 in revenue seems quite likely. Probably not happening in admissions though.

I wonder if it's benefiting from Frozen's run a bit since they're both Disney properties.

That would be great for 'Maleficient'. That forecast would give it the third highest opening of the year only behind Frozen and Conan and the second highest gross only behind Frozen (well fourth and third once 'When Marnie Was There' starts its run).

If 5-7 was the norm in all markets imagine the total worldwide gross of some movies.
