FYC 1970s Oft-considered a Mary Poppins wannabe, this does a lot to distinguish itself from Poppins while still capturing much of its spirit and personality. Tons of fun setpieces, a likable, lackadaisical tone, expert performances from both Angela Lansbury and David Tomlinson, and plenty of scenes where a witch is killing Nazis. More movies need that stuff! Most people are familiar with the Lohan remake, but this is a pretty fun movie too. It uses its premise well, has great actors with the mother and daughter, and it has a lot of wacky goofiness that was common in Disney live-action features at that time that, while getting tired by the 70s, was still pretty endearing here. A good time. It's an oddly melancholy and murky film from Disney. It's very grungy visually, it's consistently gloomy and melancholy. It's a rarity when most Disney films are known for silly scenarios and bright, poppy visuals. But it helps make this stand out and has a lot of personality and fun characters that still makes this endearing for all ages. This was one of Disney's few big hits for their animation department around this time, and it's easy to see why.
