  1. lol I need to watch this movie now Very annoying though that they named Jock "Scotty". Like I know he's Scottish, but how did Whit Stillman forget that detail?
  2. FYC 1950s A fantastic combo of concept, cast, and execution. It's a fantastic story with complexity and nuance, about humanity and technology and intellect, all anchored by an incredible cast of Hollywood legends. James Mason is phenomenal as the morally conflicted Captain Nemo, while Kirk Douglas, Peter Lorre, and Paul Lukas serve well as our likable heroes. There's also incredible setpieces including a giant squid, amazing production design, gorgeous underwater cinematography, and a cute sea lion. It's a fantastic package that deserves way more love amongst Disney fandoms, as it sadly feels underappreciated in this day and age. Obviously everybody knows what this is, but I feel most only know it for the spaghetti scene and don't acknowledge the rest of the piece. In many ways, this is Disney's best romance story ever. A fantastic look at social class divisions with two well-defined and interesting dog characters. It's reminiscent of classic romantic comedies, while also being a mature, smarlty-written piece about relationships, sacrifice, and adjusting to life changes. Great music too. Most people know it for the ending, but there's a lot more to this story. It's a very strong tale of growing up, as the son of the family, the teenage boy Travis, must learn to be the man of the house and take responsibility, while also try to develop a friendship with his new pet dog he wants nothing to do with. It's a film about how being a man also means being sensitive, letting your guard down, and be more appreciative towards others. It's also pretty brutal at points. While still aimed at a younger audience, this film contains some intense fight scenes between animals and there's a good blend of tough, heavy moments mixed in with some enjoyable moments of tenderness. It's what classic Disney does so well. Show how life is full of tough, dark, sad moments, but it can often lead to the happiest results. And yes, that ending really is something great. The final act is full of great tension and drama and elevates the whole picture from a decent kids title and a really solid family drama. This is a weird movie, and I love every second of it. It's an odd concept of a kid turning into a dog through magic gobbledygook that offers surreal moments of lunacy, fun insights into 1950s culture, and a solid story anchoring everything. These kinds of goofy low-budget comedies Disney made in the 50s-70s are definitely an acquired taste, but this is one of the better ones. It's reminiscent of 60s sitcom kitsch, which is my everything. And if you're in the same boat, you'll dig this too. Absurdly silly, but also very endearing and charming all the same. Not only does this have legit impressive special effects that still look impressive decades later, but there's lovely Irish locales and vistas, an endearing cast, including a pre-Bond Sean Connery as an Irish man--not as weird as John Wayne being Irish I suppose--and a lighthearted story that flows well, features a lot of memorable bits of folklore, and an entertaining climax that has just enough dread behind it, while still serving well as an upbeat family story. It deserves more love among classic Disney fans.
  3. I haven’t seen it. I’m actually going to DC this weekend for the Eagles/Commanders game. Have no idea if I’ll even watch Freddy’s because I doubt I’ll get much out of it. Maybe if I’m really, really bored and have nothing to do.
  4. Well to clarify, I’m not saying it will make as much as those movies. But something like 190, on par with Cinderella? That sounds solid to me. Like I doubt Disney expects Little Mermiad numbers, so why should I?
  5. *peeks around corner* I still think this will do fine. Princess stuff is Disney’s bread and butter and the kids don’t care about the “backlash” crap this is going through. *leaves before getting lectured*
  6. Dune 2 may only win the year because it's the only movie releasing in 2024, but I still count that as a victory!
  7. Been a good philosophy to follow by if I'm being honest. Makes me feel better about myself and the sorry situation I'm in.
  8. Feel like a lot of the "overhaul" stuff seems a little confirmation bias-y? Like I definitely remember Martin Klebba saying he was going to play Grumpy back in 2020 or 2021, so the dwarfs probably were always part of the initial idea.

  10. Yep. It's also an issue where WB has never done a great job keeping them fresh and relevant for today's kids, especially after Back in Action bombed. You look at Disney, and there's always a Mickey Mouse cartoon airing for preschoolers to indoctrinate them young, those new Paul Rudish shorts aired on Disney Channel all the time, Mickey toys and merch is always on the shelf. WB had a good thing going in the 90s, gangsta flava and all, but now you get like one new reboot every couple years that come and go after 1 or 2 seasons, and now the franchise is largely stuck in a walled garden of a streaming serivce that is nowhere near as popular or successful as Disney's walled garden of a streaming service. Maybe they need to follow the 90s playbook and make Taz and Porky trap/Soundcloud rappers.
  11. The director of this also did those Looney Tunes shorts that debuted on HBO Max a couple years back, which are AMAZING, so I'm excited for this. Neat-o that this isn't a straight-to-HBO Max release too. Good on them, even though I don't know how much pull Looney Tunes has with today's kids.
  12. I mean it was three movies for the longest time, but then when the first movie dropped, they announced it would be five. Even back in 2016, I was skeptical on that idea, and I'm still confused what the goal was or why they did it. Were they just spooked by the bad reviews for BvS and Suicide Squad and needed a bigger safety net? It's dumb.
  13. Been thinking for a while this had the chance to be the biggest movie of the holidays. I don’t think it will make Frozen or Zootopia numbers, and maybe it’s just my social circle which is biased towards Disney Adults/animation fans, but it’s been getting the strongest promo I’ve seen for an original Disney animated movie since probably Moana, even getting a boost from Disney 100/Once Upon a Studio stuff. It also helps that this is taking from the most successful, most iconic, most loved form of a “Disney movie”. Princesses, castles, catchy songs, cute sidekicks, the whole nine yards. Just need that good ol' 85% on Rotten Tomatoes and a bunch of "Disney does it again" review quotes, and we're golden. There’s even kind of a nostalgia effect going on where the kids that saw Tangled and Frozen back then are now old enough where they can go all “OMG MY CHILDHOOD” for a Disney movie that’s just like what they saw as kids...that feels very weird to write.
  14. I mean Universal has done the exact same playbook. Sing had sneak previews on the opening Saturday of Moana, Sing 2 on the opening Saturday of Encanto, Puss in Boots 2 the opening Saturday of Strange World. It's a free country, so why not copy the competition and play dirty right back?

  16. Ted Lasso is hilarious to me. Not the show itself, because I only saw the pilot. It’s my parents’ favorite show at the moment and when I mentioned that I heard the newer seasons are trash, they were baffled why somebody would say that. This was the same case with Game of Thrones’ last season. All I saw online was people complaining about how awful it was, but my parents couldn’t stop raving about it and thought all the complaints were nonsense. Was a real whiplash moment every Monday for me lmao
