Well that's true with every movie coming out this year. Venom did 90M and the PLFs still represented like 64% of its gross. There's definitely some concerning stuff over people exclusively going towards PLFs, but it really doesn't matter for openings. And honestly I'm not even expecting anything that huge because Inception and Porthos' data is a lot less potent. Right now I'm thinking about an opening on par, maybe slightly higher, than the Feig movie. And honestly, that's really good. Not just for the pandemic standards (top 10 opening of the year, Spider-Man probs the only movie that will even sniff a 3-Day that high), but the film is likely cheaper than the Feig movie, so it'll be fine on that end. I know there's issues with selling the movie OS, but that's not what we're talking about here. Honestly I just think people's pessimism on the movie is because they want it to tank rather than feeling the data truly points negative. And trust me, I understand why from a "fuck the manbabies" perspective and all the other toxic implications surrounding the movie (for the record, we're leaving it at that, because I really don't want to deal with the infighting, so don't respond back with any of that today) -

2022 Box Office Predictions and Discussion

Christmas is just around the corner mah boi -
As one of the tracking team guys, you guys are in for a rude awakening regarding Ghostbusters. Sales are already really strong out of the gate and indicate at the very least an opening on par with the last Ghostbusters movie. We all like to mock nostalgia-wanking, but it's the only thing that sells these days and you all know it.

Look I would love to be proven wrong here, and I'm sure this is just me going "expect the worst, hope for the best", but everything from how the current market is looking and acting, as well as how much larger and potent the streaming/VOD market is here in the US compared to other countries just reads to me that NWH will do ~350M, and I think that's still a really good and wonderful and important milestone to get to and we shouldn't just discredit that because it would do more in 2019.
-
I talked with Cap about this earlier today, but the big issue is that even predicting as little as 400M feels like a herculean task to me, because we are still in a transitional, "things trying to go back to normal" phase. Openings are fine, but totals still aren't what they're used to be. Shang-Chi's still only at about 223M. It'll finish at like 235M or something. Expecting a film to double from this high in just three months? That's a pretty steep record bar to get to. And even with Christmas legs, it's offset by the fact it'll lose IMAX after 5 days to Matrix and King's Man, and PLFs are the only thing people are buying tickets for these days. It just seems like people are setting themselves up for disappointment and still in their pre-pandemic mindset. And honestly, totals-wise, who knows if we'll ever get back to those 500M/600M milestones again? inb4 I get any "hahas"
