  1. I feel like Meg might be the biggest surprise of the summer. There was literally no indication this movie would open to ~45M
  2. Sneak in? There was an entire episode of Pokemon that had Misty, a 14-year old girl, entering a bikini contest.
  3. I believe there were some slight updates and changes made on Deadline. If it's just a repost, my apologies. Below are your top 10 pics per industry estimates for the weekend of Aug. 10-12: THUMB RANK FILM DIS. SCREENS (CHG) FRI 3-DAY (-%) TOTAL WK 1 The Meg WB 4,118 $16.5M $40M $40M 1 2 M:I – Fallout Par/Sky 3,888 (-507) $5.3M (-46%) $18.9M (-46%) $160.8M 3 3 Christopher Robin Dis 3,602 $3.6M (-62%) $12.3M (-50%) $49.9M 2 4 Slender Man Sony 2,358 $4.8M $11.8M $11.8M 1 5 BlacKkKlansman Focus 1,512 $3.6M $9.4M $9.4M 1 6 The Spy Who Dumped Me LG 3,111 $1.86M (-63%) $5.8M (-48%) $23.7M 2 7 Mamma Mia 2 Uni 2,812 (-547) $1.7M (-40%) $5.4M (-40%) $103.4M 4 8 Equalizer 2 Sony 2,373 (-352) $1.4M (-40%) $5.1M (-41%) $89.2M 4 9 Hotel Transylvania 3 Sony 2,589 (-573) $1.4M (-40%) $4.8M (-40%) $146.5M 5 10 Ant-Man And The Wasp Dis 1,863 (-370) $1.1M (-35%) $3.9M (-38%) $203.3M 6
  4. Have an early shift today, and am thinking about seeing a movie. Only options that fit my schedule are Christopher Robin and Mamma Mia. Which should I choose?
  5. BlacKkKlansman 123 1925 6.39% The Meg 258 2032 12.70% Klansman Comps: 946% of Marshall (28.4M) 47% of Orient Express (13.4M) 410% of Roman Israel (18.2M) 154% of The Commuter (21.1M) 79% of Den of Thieves (12.1M) 332% of Hotel Artemis (10.7M) 118% of Superfly (8.1M) Of note, my theater's giving half of Klansman's showtimes to the second-largest auditorium. Doesn't seem to be working out too well for them, since only two showtimes have gone above 10 tickets. In fact, Thursday and Friday are taking up about 80% of Klansman's tickets sold, so don't be surprised if this film's frontloaded due to Lee's fanbase, at least for OW Meg Comps: 142% of Blade Runner (46.4M) 28% of Thor: Ragna-Rok the Dragon (34.7M) 18% of Justice League (17.2M) 230% of Tomb Raider (54.4M) 119% of Ready Player Juan (49.9M) 15% of Deadpool 2 (19.2M) 24% of Solo (20.2M) 19% of Jurassic World (28M) 39% of Ant-Man 2 (29.4M) 62% of Equalizer 2 (22.4M) 62% of Fallout (37.7M) This seems very, very good. I'm not fully confident in it crossing 30M just yet, but I feel like 25M is the minimum for this.
  6. Also of note, this will now premiere at TIFF: https://variety.com/2018/film/news/toronto-film-festival-premiere-predator-halloween-fahrenheit-1202900541/
  7. And before this inevitably becomes a shitshow of a thread, here's some rules: You are allowed to talk about your opinion of this film, its marketing, its content, its box office, and even Michael Moore, whether positive or negative. But keep your posts down to a minimum, and make sure you stay on topic. If you want to talk about the current presidential administration, politics, liberals, conservatives, or any other big picture stuff, we have an entire forum section dedicated to politics: https://forums.boxofficetheory.com/forum/58-politics/ We also have threads dedicated to US politics if you want to talk about something broad about America as a whole. Also, please be respectful about political views unless it is necessary to call out. Racism, sexism, and the like can not and should not be tolerated, so if you see it, please hit the "Report" button as soon as possible, and the mods will take care of it. Otherwise, either politely debate or ignore. So yeah, don't be stupid.
  8. Variety (meh): https://variety.com/2018/film/reviews/the-meg-review-jason-statham-1202896831/ Hollywood Reporter (negative): https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/review/meg-review-1131154 Indiewire (C): https://www.indiewire.com/2018/08/the-meg-review-jason-statham-shark-1201990210/
  9. Don't know how trustworthy this is, especially since I can't find any other news source, but here you go.
  10. Also interesting is that the TIFF announcement mentions it as an "international premiere" which leans into the idea the film will first premiere at Telluride. That's really, really good.
