"Oscar bait" is frankly the most tiring buzzword in film discussion. Not just because of how it's liberally thrown around for everything, even movies that frankly wouldn't appeal to the average Academy voter, but it's frankly an annoying pejorative that only exists so people can mock decent-to-good dramas, all to sound like you're above those "snooty elites". As if making a good movie that could win accolades and gives good directors and actors a chance to tell compelling and important stories is somehow a bad thing. Give me a break. 🙄

This is arguably the real culprit to Whitney's underperformance. The biggest of these biopics are big names active in Hollywood who were promoting the movie like crazy (Elton John, Ice Cube, Dr. Dre) or they had A-list people closely associated with them who were actively promoting the movie (Priscilla Presley, Brian May, Adam Lambert. Elvis also had Eminem and Doja Cat and Kacey Musgraves on the soundtrack). Whitney doesn't really have that. Bobby Brown sucks and his biggest claim to fame apart from his legal troubles was being on The Masked Singer, a fate worse than death. Closest thing is Kevin Costner, but he only did one thing with Whitney and is busy with Yellowstone promotion. Which like...I don't blame him, since they only did the one thing, but it does put this movie at a disadvantage in getting the fanbase all riled up and excited and aware.

Well...we made it. While most Christmases are exciting and cheery, this year's doesn't really have that feeling. At least here in the States, there are currently millions with no heat or power due to the winter storms and heavy wind chills. And thankfully my family has not been affected by it. But even so, despite my lucky privileges, I don't feel all that happy this year either. Frankly, the last couple months have been the absolute worst of my life. I got laid off from a job that I loved working in, losing all the amazing coworkers and incredible opportunities I had in the process. I had a new job fairly quickly, but the whole endeavor was a miserable experience and the people in charge didn't even give me a chance and let me go after two weeks, despite me doing everything they asked me to do. And now in this supposedly festive time period, I've been scrambling from job interview to job interview while also trying to buy Christmas presents for my family without any income arriving. Juggling all of this is an absolute nightmare, only compounding the typical Christmas holiday stress further. Add on everybody in my family but me getting COVID around that time period (how I didn't get it I will never understand) and the box office being the worst it has ever been and it's getting tough to find something happy from all this. But hey...I made it through another year. I've had fun with my family this entire weekend, I get to see Glass Onion tomorrow, a film I am super excited for, and I still have you knuckleheads to talk to. The past two weeks have been very hectic on this board and it's hard to keep track of everything. Especially with some trolls trying to ruin the party. But this place has been my rock and comfort for years now and I love all of you silly goobers for giving me friends to talk to and a shared hobby we can all partake and have fun in. And while it's hard to stay positive at this point, both in my personal life and this silly hobby of mine, at least I have people I have a connection to and vent towards if need be and plenty of memorable stories for 2023. So hope you all enjoy your holiday breaks and here's to 2023, which will, at the very least, be an interesting time for everybody.

Moderation @StreamBO That's enough. I don't care what actual reason you have for your whole "grr theaters bad" rhetoric, but it's not funny, everybody here is sick of it, and it seems you're just trying to troll and get a reaction from others. Continue with this nonsense and you will see a threadban. Your choice.

Yeah, I know right? It's almost like this is a forum specifically dedicated towards domestic box office or something.

Wanted to mention btw that Regal's doing another Monday Mystery Movie thing on January 9. So...what's coming out on Apple soon? Wikipedia says a Julianne Moore movie drops in February. Could also be the Taron Egerton Tetris movie in March. -

You literally answered your own question right there. It's precisely because it's not Christmas yet that they placed it out on PVOD. Universal already made solid money on the film, and now they want to strike while the iron is hot and get the money from people who want to watch it at home. Nobody's going to see a Christmas movie in February or March, and PVOD doesn't impact legs, so you might as well get some extra revenue from the film that's likely going to be more revenue than the likely $3 million gross from theaters that weekend. I know you hate these early windows and that streaming is the devil's work, but it makes total sense to capitalize on the film's popularity like this so early and it's more than clear that Universal likes doing this strategy.
