  1. With Amazon, Apple, Netflix, and possibly Google jumping into content creation - there will be enough competition for content in the future.

If Disney stopped making R-rated movies (their own follies if that happens), then someone else will pick up the vacancies.

Disney is not doing this because they want the whole pie. They have to do it because they are afraid of the newcomers that have thicker wads of cash than they have.

  2. I watched SW OT when I was small and was impressed by the story and the technology, which felt like a romantic action in space. Something new back then. The sabre fight was meh, but the idea of a laser sabre (a sabre you can launch by pressing a button) was cool. And the idea that  a sabre can be controlled that it can defeat laser guns were pretty cool, too.

I think if the Last Jedi can bring something technologically new, instead of relying only on the nostalgia, then it can flourish - otherwise, it remains something nice to watch and no more than that. The idea of a laser sabre fight being exciting by itself, like @Olive Skywalker said, would be delusional.

Do you really think it matters much to Disney to claim a temporary #1 spot over Hidden Figures, when R1 as been #1 for three weeks and already has almost  a half-billion DOM in the bank?

    Disney's estimate is about right.

HF is underestimated. So, it's really HF that overperforms. Fox was probably being very conservative that caused R1 to temporarily won the weekend.

  4. Apparently Dory and One Piece is close to each other that Variety has Dory at No. 2 instead:

TOKYO — “Shin Godzilla,” Toho’s reboot of its signature series after a 12-year hiatus, handily won the weekend in Japan. Bowing on July 29 on 441 screens nationwide, the film earned $6.1 million on 412,000 admissions in its opening frame.

The score is more than triple the first weekend take of the previous series entry, “Godzilla: Final Wars,” which finished with $12.3 million in 2004. It is also nearly 23% better than the opening weekend box office of Gareth Edward’s 2014 Hollywood version “Godzilla,” which grossed $31 million in Japan.

Disney’s “Finding Dory” held onto second place for the second weekend, while driving its cumulative total to $31 million. Toei’s animation hit “One Piece Film: Gold” slipped to third place from number one, but its total box office rose to $22.4 million.

Opening at number four was Warner’s “The Legend of Tarzan,” which brought in $1.6 million on 124,000 admissions. The film is forecast to reach $10 million milestone.

  5. Well, Disney invested some money in BFG, so it does not make sense for them to wish the movie to fail. But at the same time, they certainly would wish that Dory (which they own 100%) would be more successful than BFG. I think they sort of "Alice" it. They advertise and promote it a bit, but not really pushing too hard since they know this movie probably is not going to be very successful.

Twilight has all those same themes.... @fastclock

Possibly, I did not watch Twilight.

I just extracted the values from the movie I was watching with my kids.

Dory was fine overall - I got that it was not the most exciting film too.

Btw, I was not contemplating hard or had to think very hard about those points. I could recall them easily.

  7. Well some things that might be thought provoking in Dory:

    Spoiler
    • How do you treat/help someone with disabilities and to what extent ? (the fish couple that saw small Dory)
    • How many years does it take to let go of a "dead" child? (Dory's parents)
    • How do you measure parents' pride when their kid performs to their expectations? (Dory's parents at Dory finding them via shells)
    • How do you treat your "acquired family" vs. your "actual lost family" - as in many adoption cases? (Dory towards Marlin/Nemo vs. her parents)
