  1. The first point (about the release date) is the real killer... I believe either Firedeep or Olive had mentioned this before. If Macau 3 actually did better than KFP3, I will be damn crossed!
  2. I believe @Tigerpaw and I were saying that Ip Man 3 did well in spite of SW7 in HK, Taiwan, Malaysia and Singapore. It's quite touching surprisingly. If it also do well in China, it will be one of the rare Chinese film that perform well in both Mainland and the rest actually. I mean MH & co really perform badly outside of China
  3. This is really impressive given the snow storm and the stock market storm
  4. I wonder if there is a trend whereby family moviess "underperform" in terms of presales.
  5. I am also surprised that it remained at 7.3 on douban. Yeah this is a good sign for SW8.
  6. Today seems rather slow for a Sunday. Only ¥10m for the top movie at 1:25pm local time. SW7 at no 2 has earned only ¥8m. Weather issue?
  7. Please bear with the quote as I am not sure how to make it collapsed (esp on a mobile phone). I find the second article fascinating. Particularly this statement: “When non-Chinese see Chinese films, they want something they can’t easily see in their home countries. Not, say, a romantic comedy, of which there’s an ample supply in the American marketplace,” said Janet Yang, a Los Angeles-based veteran go-between in the rising Pacific Rim movie trade and a producer of the modern urban fish-out-of-water comedy Shanghai Calling, a bilingual film that Yang said was “marginalized” by the U.S. market. “When audiences can’t entirely relate to the characters, what’s the point?” It's contradicting that in the first place, Americans want to see something they cannot easily see at home and yet movies can be marginalised when the audience cannot entirely relate... What a fine line to walk!
  8. Thanks. Do you foresee that over time, these post 90s in 3rd and 4th tier cities will also participate in douban rankings?
  9. Two questions. Is imdb reflective of current American movie-going public? Which segment would you say is missing from douban? The seniors, third and fourth tier cities residents, blue collar?
  10. In a previous discussion in the main thread, there is a debate on whether Chinese have good or at least a different taste in movies. Apart from box office gross, it may be insightful to look at the "best movie" as rated by douban (well, there is no Oscars here). We should note that many Chinese film companies will employ people to rate their movies highly on douban and other sites. However, in general douban is deemed as more "objective" because of the reach and number of users. In fact, the users here are well known for being "black" and hard to satisfy. Here's the list of the top 10 highest movie ever based on douban ratings (as of 21st Jan 2016) 1. Shawshank Redemption, 9.6 out of 10, based on 668001 ratings 2. Léon (by Luc Besson/France), 9.4, 636565 3. Forrest Gump, 9.4, 560426 4. Farewell My Concubine (Hong Kong), 9.4, 459430 5. La vita è bella (Life is Beautiful/Italy), 9.5, 312886 6. La leggenda del pianista sull'oceano (Italy), 9.2, 486764 7. Schindler's List, 9.4, 295738 8. Spirited Away (Japan), 9.2, 505884 9. Wall-E, 9.3, 407752 10. Inception, 9.2, 621426 11. Titanic 12. 3 Idiots (India) 13. Les choristes (France/Germany/Switzerland) 14. Hachi: A Dog's Tale 15. Totoro (Japan) 16. The Godfather 17. A Chinese Odyssey Part Two - Cinderella (Hong Kong) 18. Gone with the Wind 19. Nuovo Cinema Paradiso (Italy) 20. The Pursuit of Happyness Overall, there are: 10 American, 3 Italian, 2 Japanese, 2 French (shared with Switzerland and Germany for one film), 2 Hong Konger and 1 Indian. The highest Chinese mainland film is Lifetimes by Zhang Yimou at No. 43. Source: http://movie.douban.com/top250 In 2015, the top rated foreign films are: 1. Relatos salvajes (Argentina/Spain) 2. Carol 3. Kingsman: The Secret Service 4. Bajrangi Bhaijaan (India) 5. Mad Max: Fury Road 6. The Martian 7. Furious 7 (what a coincidence!) 8. An Inspector Calls (UK) 9. Youth (Italy/ France/ Switzerland/ UK) 10. Like Sunday, Like Rain Source: http://movie.douban.com/annual2015/#1 So, what do you think of the Chinese taste?
  11. Do you know if there is an attendance record for China? If not, we can start an inflation adjusted thread for China movies? Annayya and you can contribute:)
  12. The only other market I know is South Korea but I think what you had done a fairly good estimate. The general trend is about right.
  13. The only other market I know is South Korea but I think what you had done a fairly good estimate. The general trend is about right.
  14. I would say that the reason ironically is the same. Many Chinese grew up watching Transformers cartoon and hence the "nostalgia". By the way, if it makes you happy, T4 ratings on douban is lower than SW7 (6.6 vs 7.3)
  15. I believe Western media would still report it as a HLW film. But this is an interesting point that I missed. I guess a lot more films may be produced in this arrangement.
  16. Is the sales any good? KFP3 has prob the best chance to turn the tide of HLW woes!
  17. My only fear is that James Cameron is no longer a spring chicken...
  18. No worries. China is still an evolving market. As mentioned by Firedeep, in a year's time the top 10 movies will change dramatically again. I won't say China has better taste but that it is evolving. Though action and special effects seem to be a trend and the common denominator with the US
  19. Confusing plot is another major reason. Some pointed out how ridiculous it is that the Force of the entire Universe lies within a single family. To which end, some even though that it celebrates dictatorship rather than democracy!
  20. Looking at the American list, isn't it even more VFX Porn? I guess some things are universal Rank Title(click to view) Studio Lifetime Gross Year^ 1 Star Wars: The Force Awakens BV $825,932,841 2015 2 Avatar Fox $760,507,625 2009^ 3 Titanic Par. $658,672,302 1997^ 4 Jurassic World Uni. $652,270,625 2015 5 Marvel's The Avengers BV $623,357,910 2012
  21. While you are speaking about oil, it just dropped 5%. Wonder if it will hit $26.
  22. Looks like as the day passes, SW7 slows. Right now about 33m yuan. Next two days it is projected to lose another 10% of its current screening. I think ¥150m is a tall order. More like ¥130m at most.
  23. Yes, it's from Straits Times. Do you know of any real time updates for Singapore? Strait Times do not update regularly.
