China Box Office Thread | Oppenheimer-August 30

Seems like the censorship in China for tv and web productions have become really strict. I wonder if some of the regulations will also apply to movies soon. -

Still it will reach $3 billion on Friday if it continues to make around $50m each day. -

Looks like Friday is the earliest MM can hit 3 billion rmb now. I hope Ip Man 3 can at least make 1 billion... -
Well technically, he is an idiot (but a grown-up). He is totally insane (but his brain is not dead, just working crazy). He is certainly mature (the sexiest man alive, not boy). Finally, he flaunt his butt (but not with crap) He doesn't take himself seriously. Never claim to be a role model. Not trying to vie for the Oscars. Not trying to save the world or make America great again. So, please don't be depressed. Besides, I can't think of anyone in comics that is more juvenile, brain dead and immature as DP. So I don't think there will be other pieces of work like this, except for Deadpool 2, 3, 4, 5, ... , 9...

Well, I am surprised Star Wars can still make so much money in Amercia. My friends from Asia just can't comprehend why a movie that is a rehash of old plots can become so wildly popular, that fans can watch more than once, and even won five Oscars nominations for doing the same thing with updated effects. Wow! A lightsaber of a different colour! Wow old soundtrack but louder! Very Oscar worthy But you must also remember that China actually loves explosion more. It's just that F7 cannot run for two months. Otherwise, no way Monster Hunt will be number one. -

If we go by the current trend of Disney movies, it is unlikely to do well beyond the top tier cities. But I have to say Zoopotia's trailer is hiiilaaarrriiioussss! -

One caution though. Six out of the seven days are public holidays, and the last day is Valentine's Day. Hence, it is unsurprising that it beats Christmas week gross in North America last year. Certainly fantastic but it is because the stars are aligned this week. I don' think China's gross will beat domestic gross this year. -

Well domestic gross actually includes Canada, so technically by the time it hits $500m USD, it has surpassed the gross of the Dark Knight by at least 20m. -

Stephen Chow. One of the most iconic stars from Hong Kong. His movies have a particular style of comedy and is wildly popular throughout Greater China. In recent years, he has been directing his own movies and stopped acting. This movie is his first in 3 years. It combines his style of humour, romance, action, with an environment protection message. It is about a group of sea people trying to kill an "evil" human billionaire who is trying to destroy their home but then the mermaid fell in love with the billionaire. The CGI is honestly not fantastic and the plot rather simple. But it is funny and touching enough for most audience. Broke the highest grossing day local movie record twice. Broke the highest weekly local movie record. Fastest local movie to hit ¥1b and ¥2b. Probably the first movie to reach ¥3 billion, with a possibility of hitting USD$500m. -

Understand. Just wondering if the 50% to 65% drop can be used to predict its gross by the 4th week. I know it runs longer than 4 weeks. But since foreign films can only run for 4 weeks, I thought it will make better comparison. Of course, there is still the block out period for foreign movies to consider. -

There's a report saying that the CNY weekly gross of USD $548m is the highest ever in the world, beating the record set during Christmas in the domestic market (aka Canada and USA) last year (@ USD$529m) -

So, I presume you are saying that USD$500m or RMB$3.3 billion is possible. if it falls 50% every week, then in three weeks time, it will around at $3.36 billion. if it falls 65% every week, then in three weeks time, it will around at $2.715 billion. I believe that the fall will be much closer to 50% then 65% for the next three weeks. -

At 4pm, it has surpassed yesterday's gross (with around ¥238.9m or so). It has also become the second highest local movie of all time (in just 7 days)
