Seems like such a guessing game as you need to know the % of people on holiday the effect that percentage has on the total gross.

but ultimately you're right though, it works the same as Despecible Me or Mario would once the performance capture is done. They can even through away Jim's camera angles and make new ones. It's basically like a video game map editor with character models from performance capture put into it.

actually kinda... Jim moves around virtual world while holding a physical real life camera and moves the camera in the virtual world

Sounds like they cracked the code on how to add 3D to an animated film. You could probably automate pretty well as they have the distances between the camera and entities because they use 3d models.

I saw the Mario trailer twice in IMAX 3D and it looks really nice in it. They actually put effort into making the 3D look good, much respect.
