Love how the benchmark for detractors is basically the highest grossing film of all time! I remember when they couldn't even be positive it would make 1.5b ww because cultural impact... yet i still stand here shoutin 4 billies. Nothing much has changed that couldn't have easily been predicted either.

Do some reading, I'm completely serious. The mans a genius. If you want to downplay Jim because some internet fans are obnixous go ahead, but you're only going against history. He will be remembered as one of the GOATS of the technological era, and others will be forgotten.

This thread has been "desperately" staying alive for 8 years almost. Not exactly sure where desperation comes in? Isn't desperation meant to be something extreme while the Avatar 2 thread being on the front page is just the norm? Besides it's only natural that the sequel to the highest grossing film of all time remains a hot topic on the Box Office Theory forum.

People seem to forget Jim is a better scientist than practically all scientists. So much more than a movie-maker.

First setence is correct, the level of sci-fi you prefer is indeed a preference (obiviously). Weird thing is how we call both Avatar and Star Wars science-fiction, when one is fiction-fiction.

It's not really a question of what's better science based Sci-fi or fantasy based Sci-fi, that's just a matter of preference. The actual problem is that two films are the same genre but are vastly different. I think we need better terms to distinguish between an Avatar and a Star Wars. An argument for science based sci-fi is that the audience intuitively understands that it could be real and helps with immsersion.

Avatar is hard sci. Sws is space fantasy which only science used is the "law of cool".

Look at the films above $1b, it's sad really. You say it's more difficult now but's never been done except for Jim, Frozen (had Disney Princess power) and Zootopia. I don't see why it should be any harder to do now, it's just less likely to see because the big budgets are going to sequels and remakes.
