Some relatively new stuff on Instagram. (Warning: Big images. They have been wrapped in spoilers out of courtesy.)

Well, LEGO Batman comes out next weekend and Kong is 5 weeks away, that's why.
Yeah. I don't know why I wrote that.
But since we're talking about Lego Batman, King Kong is making a brief appearance in that movie. Most likely a cameo.

I'm reading a lot of comments stating that they've destroyed the mythology of the franchise, I generally do not buy this argument that a bad sequel can ruin a franchise, but it seems to be appropriate here.
It sort of does. Also, the more I think about this movie, the more I wonder how in the hell I went out of my way to see it. I typically don't go for cliched horror, but I went to see this one.

Rings
February 2nd, 2017, 7:00 PM, 15% full
Regal Nitro Stadium 12 | Nitro, WV
Trailers:
Before I Fall
A Cure for Wellness
Get Out
CHiPs
Life
Ghost in the Shell
People laughed during the trailer for Get Out and CHiPs, and two guys in the very back row cheered for Scarlet Jo during the trailer for Ghost in the Shell.
I don't think that anybody liked it. They certainly weren't scared.

My worry is that Warner Bros. is pushing back Legendary's MonsterVerse into the closet in favor of their own properties. I've seen more marketing for The LEGO Batman Movie than I've seen for Kong: Skull Island.
Edit: Apparently this is in Denmark...not the United States. Okay...

Actually, I've settled on something. It isn't good, and I wouldn't recommend it to anybody. It's almost the same damn film as the previous films. The dumbest part is that
the character Burke ended up being Samara's mother's murderer. Most of the story is about Samara's mother, rather than Samara.
It's trying to be a sequel....and a reboot at the same time. Somehow. It doesn't work well.
Now that I've thought about it, it's a damn mess.

Sounds horrible
It probably is. Horror movies are difficult for me to judge because nothing scares me anymore. So I judge them based on other elements such as plot, narrative structure, and acting.

It's not as bad as I thought it would be. Some effort was put into the story, and there is a neat twist that was still executed sloppily. The acting and lame scare attempts were what weighed the film down. One interesting thing is that near the beginning of the film, the pacing was awkward. But it flows somewhat better in the middle. I think some scenes were cut for some reason. Either that or the writer didn't get a chance to iron out some things.
Would I recommend it? Depends on the person. But I'm not sure who that person would be.

Most of the Zords look nothing like the animals they are supposed to represent.
Tyrannosaurus is the only one I can look at and say "Yeah, that's a t-rex."
The Mastodon even looks like a spider, FFS.

I have a free pass at one of the locally owned theaters. Considering seeing this with friends tomorrow.
We are all aware that it is most likely going to be a steaming pile of shit. But that won't stop us from making fun of it.

Is it any surprise this is probably not that good? Directed by an effects guy and the trailers just make it look like standard effects fare
....Jordan Vogt-Roberts isn't an "effects guy." His resume is mostly comprised of comedy films. The Kings of Summer is a coming-of-age film and Nick Offerman: American Ham is pure stand up comedy. Unless you're referring to his directing in TV, which only lists Death Valley as a potential show that necessitated effects work.
Back when he was first announced as the director, people were scratching their heads because of his lack of experience in the science fiction and fantasy genres.
Added note: Not even his writing and producing credits list any films that necessitate special effects work. Except maybe Mash Up. I haven't seen it, personally.

Of all the movies that are being released in March, I forget that this one even exists. I thought Power Rangers was in bad shape, but now I know that isn't the case.
Life, on the other hand is something that I don't see advertising for anywhere.

I think that the only way it fails to leave a significant impact is if the cast is dreadful and there is only 15 minutes or so of Ranger/Zord action.
It would probably suffer big drops if such a thing were to happen.

Brie Larson's character (Mason Weaver) has a character profile on K:SI's Twitter.

If everyone else trusts him, I see no reason to doubt his claims.
Still wish I knew where he got this information from, but I guess that's part of being outside of the loop.

Uh, except he's fucking dead accurate on the number before estimates come out? Like every time? So, he's just really good at predicting box office numbers down to the exact decimal point? Yeah, that's not a coincidence.
And yeah, there hadn't been anything to suggest Kong had major problems either. Neither did BvS, or Suicide Squad, etc. They seemed to have had smooth productions until a few days out before release, where a LOT was revealed.
I can't say I'm surprised. It seems like a typical Warner Bros. problem with blockbuster films.
As long as the quality of the film wasn't affected, I don't give a shit. Even if it did, I'm still seeing this on opening day, or a Thursday screening (provided that any of my loser theaters happen to show it; they've been letting me down lately).

Toho must be very pleased with Your Name's performance. Even if it's knocked off the throne, I've lost count of how many times it's been #1 during its run.

No no he's not a source. Somebody on a message board is not a credible source. Is he a journalist? Does he run a website? What makes him an insider? What are all these things he's supposedly been right on? I have every reason to be skeptical.
He posts about hearing from people the movie is not good and then goes on to claim it had troubles behind the scenes. Okay well who are these people? What's their taste in movies? How much of it not being a good movie is opinion instead of fact? What kind of production troubles were there and over what? This forum is the first and only place I've heard of such thing so if there were problems and issues why hasn't anyplace else picked up on it?
If he has close ties in the industry, that counts for something.
I asked similar questions earlier, but rather than question the person who's been around the forums and developed a good reputation in the community, I asked how people were seeing the movie, knowing that no news of pre-screenings had filtered through official sources.
It's nothing to get upset over. I'm not allowing it to affect me. If the movie had problems, they aren't obvious at this point in time. It's best to wait for the film and see whether the product was ultimately good or not.

I saw the previous installments from video rentals and decided to see this in theaters because I felt I owed it that much.
It was worth the ticket price because I knew what I was getting. It's an action flick, and nothing more. But I hope this franchise is allowed to rest in peace forever.

What happened to the obligatory "lol one random guy says it sucks ahead of release so it must be true?!lolololololol Chillax gullible folks, it's meaningless internet noise because moviemaking is not objective mkay!!" stance?
I was asking to sate my curiosity, and not because I doubt anybody.
There's been no news about screenings except for surprise showings from BNAT and similar events.
-
What I want to know where this press is coming from.
Where are people seeing these screenings?
Are these tweets, or actual writings from film critics?
And since when was production "troubled?" The instance with Keaton and Simmons was brushed off by industry sources as being due to scheduling conflicts and not much else.

Summing up some points from that IMDb thread:
The user thinks it's on par with Jackson's Kong, but they're very different films. This one is much more straightforward.
It's a very fast paced film.
There is very little character development.
Lots of 70's songs.
So basically it's a blockbuster.

Damn, they really just jumped in on the previous SLOP 2 release spot. Paramount probably has a shit ton of confidence in this.
With that cast, I'd be confident too.
Say what you want about Broderick, but his voice was made for animation. He's better at voice acting than live action acting. The others just sound like an interesting group to collaborate with.
Didn't know Kenan Thompson was still acting, by the way. Good for him.

Is Kong an American creation? If so, how crazy would be to see an American Beast opening with the half of a Japanese Beast? I always thought that Kong was more popular than Godzilla.
Fifty years ago, this would have been true. It wouldn't be surprising in this decade if Godzilla ended up being more popular.
A page ago I said King Kong is a damaged brand. Godzilla was damaged in 2004 in his own country because the franchise was losing money. Now he's made a huge comeback with a Hollywood reboot and the enormous money-making Toho reboot Shin Godzilla (it was the second highest grossing Japanese film last year, it made almost $2 million in a limited United States theatrical run, and it is winning many awards in its home country). Combine that with news of Michael Dougherty becoming the director for Godzilla: King of Monsters, and Kong is being pushed back into the closet despite all of the marketing.
Case in point, this was trending yesterday:
The Kong TV spots failed to break 10k discussions on Facebook. Of course, this does not account for people without social media, or those who don't know there's another King Kong movie nearing release. But the difference is jarring--especially when the above example is for a movie that's two years and two months away from release.
