It’s not about X-Men or the rating. Disney hasn’t made anything outside of blockbusters for the past 8 years. Or anything that doesn’t appeal to the adult crowd since Touchstone which was used for Dreamworks deal was forgotten in favor of IPs.
Would Disney keep making R rated movies or smaller films in general is the question? I like CBMs but having studio diversity is better than X-Men joining the MCU. I doubt Searchlight or Kingsman or Predator happening unless Disney decides to make Fox the new Touchstone.
My guess is this if Disney gets Fox:
Disney uses the Fox label and retitles it as Searchlight and uses it for a Touchstone replacement. Avatar is released under Disney.
Deadpool, F4 and New Mutants are retconed into the MCU and while the XCU is separate they crossover every now and then.
DisneyToon uses the films under the Blue Sky label.
I can also see them wanting Ferdinand (if it’s a hit) along with Pigeon Impossible and Nimona. Maybe they’ll retool DisneyToon and make these films with a cheaper budget.
I can see Marvel attempting to add New Mutants and Deadpool into the MCU but not the X-Men. Perhaps if Disney gets it, AMaTW introduces the Foxverse XMen due to the multiverse aspect.
IT, Thor 3, and JL had like 3 screens if I remember correctly but started with 2. I started surveying my theater in mid May. So don’t know about GV2 or R1 but this is presales. Finals will be next Tuesday. Pretty sure it’ll get 5 though.
The only reason why I know Moana stayed was because I saw Moana the day after Christmas there.
My theater pretty much has Jedi on at least 4 screens and Ferdinand should have at least a 2D/3D Split. Not mention we have Christmas movies here showing. I am positive JL will lose a screen due to PLFs and Coco might have to share one of it’s two screens with Ferdinand since it lost the PLF split like JL, and like 80% of the holdovers gone. By the time Wednesday comes I think JL will be gone. Coco might stay due Disney shenanigans, it happened with Moana last year.
It’s theater economics. Studios have contracts. With 9+ wide releases during the holidays and theaters probably keeping Coco due to Disney. JL will lose half of its theaters like Beast did over the holidays.
