I said last year, I thought WB had a great strategy for everyone, b/c it brought certainty to everyone in the movie chain.  HBO Max new subscribers knew they were getting X amount of new movies and what dates, theaters knew they were getting X amount of new movies at a new reduced fee rate and on what dates, and WB knew they could keep their product now rolling and fresh, so they could keep starting new movies, while releasing their holdover product, to keep the industry moving.

At the time, I called it a Win/Win/Win for everyone.  As we sit here today, it's probably an even bigger 3-way win than I thought.

I mean they did piss off a lot of people in the industry and they obviously didn't grow their platform that well. It was a great way for them to be lazy and create less of their own content. I think the reaction was mixed. Some benefits and certainly some downsides

Well, Cinemark booked the AEW Revolution sporting event for today (probably another reason they passed on Raya)...

Yeah I think that space is only going to grow. I wish they would improve the quality of their theaters.Even the new ones that are near me that are nice don't have leather seats.

Yeah, also feel like we already went over this with Mulan. The $30 price tag just isn’t made with individuals in mind, and it’s pretty brutal for them, but that’s just how it will be. If you price such that it’s attractive to a viewing party of one, it’s a total steal for the real target audience of households size 3-6 or whatever. An equilibrium where poeple pay $10 at a theater to see it solo and a family pays $30 instead of $40 on D+ is fine for Disney. An equilibrium where the solo is paying 15 for at-home convenience and the family is paying 15 instead of 40 is leaving a lot of money on the table.

I personally think they should have experimented with 25 though.

Yeah the problem for that is social distancing and covid. If they created a system that allowed for one purchase to enter a special code for up to three people that opens a separate special window where they all watch the film. Perhaps attached to the side of it where you can minimize a chat screen to virtually watch it together.

There are apps that already allow you to stream or watch content together perhaps there's some way to marry the two.

People in West are paying $20 for buying films on digital platforms 3 months after release. $30 on day and date release is quite okay IMO.

Buying a film on digital platform for $20 versus a one-time rental of $30 is completely different.

That's like a car payment to own for $200 versus a lease at $300. It absolutely should be the opposite

They are making do on the private screenings for their theaters...every weekend, my 2 Cinemarks take their 4 60 seaters and sell them all as privates...and sell them all out.  Sometimes, they add some of their 100 seaters (like they did the last 2 weekends) if they sell all the showings out before the Tuesday before.

It's a "birthday party"/"private group" strategy that seems to be working to keep them afloat.  Since they can't sell more than 10-20 seats/showing in a 60 seater, getting $149 for a new movie works out to a practical sell out on a small screen...and if they sell it out as an old movie for $99, I'm not even sure how much they have to kick back...

But with the strategy, they only need to really book 6-8 screens of their 12s with movies per week...so they don't need every new movie, and they truly just need one innocuous family one to handle all the birthday parties...

Now, when seating starts to open up, we'll see what they will do with the private showings vs booking more movies...

But right now, they couldn't make more money on the private showings, and not much more on the major ones (since 1 of my 2 Cinemarks is still only a 2.5/day week open theater and the other is only open later afternoon and evening on the weekdays).  So, 6% of not much is a lot...

I would like to see them do more special events. Streaming and performances and musicals etc

Just to be clear, it's not Cinemark refused to play Raya but Disney didn't give their film on lower terms.

I am not sure how much Hollywood studios get, but Indian films get as high as 60% from Cinemark while AMC and Regal are usually 45-50%. And again, the only loss from Cinemark is probably where Cinemark is the only theater or best theater of area. It's not like AMC or other theaters were overflowing with demand.

Yeah I guess some folks would have missed it for some membership they have with Cinemark or whatever.

Raya opened lower than T&J in almost every market in the world. T&J is just bigger IP. I wasn't really seeing how Raya open bigger than T&J but since most here were thinking so, so I guess...

That said, going by 2nd weekend, I think T&J will do around $40-45M DOM. Raya if WOM is there, can still catch it. Internationally it will beat T&J almost certainly if weekend trend is anything to go by.

If that's the case then Disney was smart to not drop terms. No point in setting a precedent for the future

WB apparently gave them a way better deal.  Disney wanted 51% - WB takes 45%.  WB apparently also offers an "unknown more" per Deadline.  So, Disney pretty much tried to play top dog, still, and Cinemark said no thank you.

I also feel like in this situation Cinemark realized that giving into Disney wasn't really going to help their attendance that much. It was silly of Disney to try to leverage that but both Cinemark and Disney are not pleased I'm sure. I'll be interested to see what's Cinemark's numbers look like for 2021. Not as bad as AMC but probably pretty disastrous.

Well, I mean Disney was crying just as hard b/c they could have easily dropped to 45% when they got the no...so both sides cried over the 6%...and it looks like, for once (and this never usually happens), Disney is crying the most for this particular movie...

Honestly in this environment I don't think they expected to make much money and I don't think they really care too much about what they earn in theaters cuz it was going to be a loss regardless. They probably will be more upset then it doesn't drive new membership. Their life could be way worse. They could be HBO Max.

Hopefully at some point they put to bed the $30 ridiculous price tag for streaming. I mean I can take my daughter to the movie with my wife and get a snack for that price. That literally just screams don't buy me and wait.

Lmao crying over 6%. Cinemark is a better business than AMC but still awful. Hate their theaters. Almost none in Texas, washington, virginia etc where I lived were nice.

Jesus, when the B.O will be recovered? If it happens at all. In some places where the vaccination is in full speed (China, SK, Japan, Russia) the B.O already came back to the level pre-pandemic, and yet, in America, where the numbers of cases has been decreasing for weeks now, a movie can't even reach $10m on OW?

I wonder if the DOM market is over for good.

Some time next year. Next year will be worse than 2017 but not horrible if Avatar actually comes out. Considering it's delayed like 37 times who knows

  11. I have apple now only because my wife's employer reimbursed her for an iPad for virtual health appointments.

But that one i might keep after a year I get apple gift cards 20% off I can buy a year for $50.

Disney is a lock for years. As is netflix (wife loves it and I'm not suicidal 😂).  Beyond those not sure.

Finally got a good indoor antenna! So I have local channels.

You’re not the only one. I’ve read that several people have had issues. It’s on them to make their platform more user friendly. It’s too bad too, because their content is great.

For me it's a non-starter .loving Wonder woman but I wouldn't pay $6 a month for this the way it's set up.

    Especially inside other apps.

Maybe you’re right, cdsacken! Interested in why you think that though? HBOMAX has good content. However, I can see your point in that it is more expensive than the others. They probably need to do something about that, if they lose subscriptions.

Disney and Netflix share a different purpose and it makes sense for my to keep disney for my daughter (even though I like it more!)

Not a chance on earth I ever do Netflix and HBOmax.

I hope HBO successful I just wish AT&T and Warner Bros weren't in charge of it they're horrible at management.

We’re getting a little off topic here, I probably shouldn’t  have responded to ddddeeee’s post since this isn’t really the thread for it anyway.

I assume since they haven’t received any discussion that people agree with my 450-550 DOM, 850-1.05 OS ranges for the movie that this thread is about 😁

I think it will be lucky to hit 1.05B total
