  1. In the conversation for the most of any movie ever made for Miniatures I think specially phantom menace, if I remember correctly. https://makezine.com/2015/10/07/the-surprising-practical-effects-of-the-star-wars-prequels/ The big issue is not CGI or not, it was much more green screen (with composition) or not I think. And for the next one use of not ready yet digital camera and other technic. But if they would have more CGI instead of miniature set added by composition I think it would have been better.
  2. 150M is less than Deepwater horizon/Fantastic 4 gross budget or what they had in mind for Gambit.... If 150m does not lead to profit for a studio you probably should not make it at $130m either, that making $20m on a 300m investment. https://fastlane.louisianaeconomicdevelopment.com/Film/FilmSearch.aspx Project Number Film ID # Production Title Production Type Company Name Estimated Total Jobs Estimated Total Budget Estimated LA Expenditures Estimated LA Payroll Application Received Date Initial Certification Date Final Certification Date Total Granted Tax Credits Amount Credits Transferred to State 20151629 0669-2010 The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn feature film TSBD Louisiana, LLC 450 $247,300,432 $98,283,323 $81,683,395 09/01/2010 09/13/2010 11/15/2011 $33,154,211 $33,154,211 20151683 0631-2010 Untitled Hasbro Battleship Project feature film Battleship Delta Investments LLC 1575 $214,995,758 $67,667,444 $37,679,841 05/26/2010 06/24/2010 03/06/2013 $16,987,026 $0 20161761 0836-2011 The Untitled Tom Cruise Project feature film Crater Lake Productions, LLC 1215 $160,000,000 $75,000,000 $12,000,000 11/07/2011 12/06/2011 12/02/2014 $22,930,228 $0 Project Number Film ID # Production Title Production Type Company Name Estimated Total Jobs Estimated Total Budget Estimated LA Expenditures Estimated LA Payroll Application Received Date Initial Certification Date Final Certification Date Total Granted Tax Credits Amount Credits Transferred to State 20140874 1139-2014 THE FANTASTIC FOUR feature film Twentieth Century Fox 800 $154,778,784 $28,987,527 $55,740,609 05/07/2014 06/20/2014 06/02/2016 $3,253,262 $0 20140874 1139-2014 THE FANTASTIC FOUR feature film Twentieth Century Fox 800 $154,778,784 $28,987,527 $55,740,609 05/07/2014 06/20/2014 03/14/2016 $27,003,031 $0 20140122 1102-2014 Terminator: Genesis feature film T5 Pictures, LLC 669 $158,477,632 $104,114,461 $27,660,635 01/10/2014 02/20/2014 08/06/2015 $289,012 $0 20140122 1102-2014 Terminator: Genesis feature film T5 Pictures, LLC 669 $158,477,632 $104,114,461 $27,660,635 01/10/2014 02/20/2014 05/01/2015 $32,843,775 $0 20150050 1226-2015 DEEPWATER HORIZON feature film SUMMIT ENTERTAINMENT, LLC 2500 $156,000,000 $118,000,000 $83,000,000 01/07/2015 02/19/2015 06/28/2016 $37,737,087 $0 20151084 1291-2015 GAMBIT feature film Twentieth Century Fox 431 $154,975,309 $111,834,168 $28,098,668 06/19/2015 06/26/2015 20151438 0750-2011 G.I. 3. I am unsure where they get "reported" number for a case like this. Industry competitor talking to them, evaluating what it would have cost them to do this mixed with some talk in the industry ? Some contact in the insurance company that insure those production or state tax credit bureau ? I imagine there is a short but still long enough list of people that do not work for the studio itself that see some or the complete numbers that could be talking to them.
  4. Cleopatra adjust to a 460m domestic box office run on a 350m budget, would be not bad now a day with international market. Apparently Fox turned a profit 4-5 year's later with it's ABC tv run. The giant flop aura surrounding some old movies were in part of a press tradition to only look domestic box office and that grew in a time when the only possible revenues for a movie was the box office. Cleopatra domestic rental was a bit lower than it's expense but not by much.
  5. Do not think anyone has the ability to translate revenues from something on a streaming service on a box office message board. Solo is doing badly but will still make much more money than it's releasing cost (unlike box office bomb), so at least it will lost less money than if it was never released.
  6. From where else can we pull figure about how many people watched a movie exactly ? It is far from something that we will be able to read anywhere. How many people in China end up watching those movies (with piracy or otherwise) for example ?
  7. It is also (for that example), them writing what people in the industry feed them, when the Mummy failed they had a lot of people talking to them, maybe when Disney fail, they are just able to keep it more thigh with no one speaking to the trade to play blame games, it is made more in house after all and with so much winning the people involved in those some flop from time to time having gained the right to fail.
  8. You really rarely have a studio movie in house production budget being confirmed, they write reported in the sentence for a reason
  9. Except for Heart of the sea there is no flop in that list too. Rush was a nice success in the F1 relevant markets, made more than 2.5 time it's budget and I think a solid home video run. He (and Hanks and others) accepted a massive pay cut and to let away their first dollar gross point on Inferno because Angel&Demon lost the studio money and book sales prospect showed an expected huge drop for the next one that was cancelled. Sony estimated Inferno break even point at 219.8m WW when they thought the movie would cost 90m net, a surprising much better exchange rate turned the actual cost closer to a rumored 75m net, it still almost tripled it's budget at the box office, a small profit would not even be surprising for it even with that abyssal domestic run.
  10. Lot of candidate: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_box_office_bombs But Pluto Nash not reaching 10m at the world box office is a special one (even the Promise reached that and that is the only giant budget movie ever that didn't try to make money). Heaven Gates is one of the most important one and arguably the biggest, didn't just killed it's studio and the director career but participated with a couple of other title (but was the face of those small group of giant failure) to the destruction of the auteur movement of new Hollywood of the 70s, studio getting back into controlling movies.
  11. A comedic bit usually playout faster no ? That could be a reason, also hard to imagine Deadpool work without Reynolds he worked hard to make sure on that.
  12. Look great ? WW-China box office of recent SH movies: Wonder Woman: 730m Thor 3 : 744m Homecoming: 768m Guardian of the galaxy: 690m Guardian of the galaxy 2: 762m All much more expensive than a Deadpool movie all the listed above giant success that will lead to giant sequels.
  13. But most people watch movies at home than in theater (well maybe that is less true for giant box office success, but probably still true) Awaken was on Netflix, around that time you had around 45-50m Netflix account in the US, with 2.5 viewer by account average that 115-125m people, the same will be true for all around the world.
  14. That the goal, once representation is reached also people will stop talking about is it good or bad representation and what minority characters can be (bad guy, killed at any time, anything) will open.
  15. Industry site are output for agents and studio this is true, some say around 90% there come from them and not the result of journalistic work when they were not directly in cahoot with the Weinstein and others. Real output like a real journal is a completely different animal, a real journal would never have a critic on a paid vacation by a studio for example, they will pay travel, hotel, etc... to them if needed to go see a movie in some premier/festival and they will have usually journalistic ethic involved.
  16. I think that is a big part of the difference, prime Williams versus now Williams, the score was such a giant part of Star Wars success.
  17. Did she say to not hate them ? Not sure to follow here, the focus on killing the enemy so you protect you brother in arm mentality is a common one in many army.
  18. I think that is easy to understand, why could it be a big deal to have issue with a movie ? That is an harder to understand for the average people that never cared for any franchise ever (or at least no where the level star wars fans do) like most. It feel like if it is a big deal to dislike a movie, there must be something stronger going on (underestimating how crazy those fan goes for those products)
  19. Some hope it would play more weekend days.... but if I am not wrong that (specially 24) would make it possible to significantly miss that 114m 4 days target the trade had after the OD no ? Days of future past made 29.2 was around 65 after it;s Saturday and made 110.5m for the 4 days. Solo would be between what 59 and 61m with a smaller saturday, could do below 105m
  20. Release date is quite far, what if it is an unfinished version ? You are burning you first watch of a movie for some weird Internet bragging right....
  21. One possible theory for some of the change is that Force Awaken giant success could have changed what they wanted and made the stake higher, something I could easily see to be true about Rogue One massive change, much less here. One other theory around is them not sticking to script, I imagine Jonah Hill had no issue with improve going on with is script, specially if it was by him.
  22. Fandango sales today: Solo A S 70066 Deadpool 37007 Avengers 11934 Book Clu 7130 Life of 2574 Breaking 1702 Show Dog 1345 A Quiet 1243 Overboar 1165 Solo will have a good advantage of more 3D/PLF share I imagine and higher ticket average, but......... not doubling deadpool sale on there and Deadpool sale much more the night than during the day. On the last 2 hours they are getting close.
