That's insane, didn't think those things could happen in Europe. either F1 wasn't that big or F2 is insane.
Considering in Germany or the Uk or France it opened with I think around 33% of the total of F1.
F1 was a huge cultural phenomenon worldwide that only got more widespread and more embedded in pop culture after the film left the theaters
F2 is merely reaping the benefits of that

And yet it failed miserably in Australia.

That's incredible. I guess Frozen being Nordic-inspired is helping it resonate there.
Not to mention The Snow Queen is a Danish fairy tale (even if it's only loosely based on it)
Not surprised at it absolutely smashing in Scandinavia

They're very similar performance-wise - TFA certainly wasn't massively bigger than TPM.
Accounting for the effects of ticket price inflation and market expansion from 1999 to 2015, I'd say that TFA was at most 15-20% bigger than TPM worldwide.
At least domestic wise, it is massively bigger than TPM
It sold more tickets (108M) than any film since Titanic (18 years before its release)
Outdid Empire Strikes Back by 10M more tickets
And it's still the highest grossing movie ever in the US and the UK
It's gonna be a while until something outgrosses it in these markets

Hhm. I’m actually one of those folks who really liked Hobbit: BOTFA. 👩🏻💼
And i think The Hobbit is an underrated fantasy trilogy.
I said that in regards to their opening weekends trajectory
I like both trilogies and both endings
-
Battle of the Five Armies all over again...
Actually that trilogy and this trilogy's trajectory are very similar
-
I liked it even better after watching it a 2nd time
This is because I had no more expectations and I didn't have everyone else's loud opinions in my subconscious anymore
I regret watching and reading even non-spoiler reviews because I then started pinpointing the scenes the criticisms were referring to
I feel like if I just went in with absolutely no idea of what to expect I would've enjoyed it more and not look at every scene and subconsciously nitpick
Disregarding every extra thing weighing this film down whether it'd be the TLJ vs TFA vs OT vs whatever debates...
As a film in itself, I absolutely love its message, makes me feel really good and hopeful, personally
And if others felt I what I felt after watching this film then absolute kudos and respect to everyone involved in this film
Also idk if it's just me but something about the atmosphere/vibe of this movie and TFA really gives me 90s vibes for some reason, which makes me love them even more

Not sure if already posted but...Avatar's getting a re-release (it's just a $9M gap anyway between it and Endgame anyway)
QuoteCameron believes "Avatar," which celebrates its anniversary Wednesday, will be restored to its place atop the box-office mountain over "Endgame" through an inevitable rerelease, part of a larger plan to rekindle global audience love before the movie's first sequel, planned for release Dec. 17, 2021. "I think it’s a certainty," says Cameron of "Avatar" eventually passing "Avengers" in theaters. "But let’s give 'Endgame' their moment and let’s celebrate that people are going to the movie theater."
"I don’t want to sound snarky after I took the high road (by offering congratulations)," he says. "But they beat us by one quarter of a percent. I did the math in my head while driving in this morning. I think accountants call that a rounding error."
Lol at his last comment

oops already posted

The first half was a HUGE mess I agree with all the criticisms in that regard
But then I LOVED the second half especially the third act I loved that
It's not perfect but it's not as bad as people are saying, you'd think it was the worst movie to ever be released or something
Overall I was satisfied and I can honestly say that I like the sequel trilogy and I'm glad it exists as the introduction of Star Wars for this generation

Black Widow, No Time To Die, Mulan, Wonder Woman 1984 had back to back to back good trailers
Wasn't expecting that, probably gonna be the biggest (and the best) blockbusters next year

BW and Bond 25 seem like they're gonna rule next year, the peak of spy films coming after the peak of superhero films (2018-2019) perhaps?
Minions 2 will also be a spy film, kiddie version (literally with kid Gru)
Those are most likely the top 4 WW along with Mulan...

The top 3 most underestimated blockbusters of the year:
Aladdin, Toy Story 4 (esp after its opening), Rise of Skywalker
Two down, one more to go

Frozen 2's opening being lower than Finding Dory let alone Incredibles 2 just proves the point that no one should've compared it to those in the first place
13-14 years of nostalgia build up >>> a 6 year gap
Summer films >>> November films
This is a success, not an underperformance
The only ones who should be disappointed are the ones who had unrealistic expectations

Knew it, this is their Age of Ultron, Fallen Kingdom, Last Jedi, etc.
Story was so weird and boring, the conflict and premise were so vague and frankly unnecessary
Spoilerthere's not even a real antagonist
it only felt interesting when the grandfather was revealed to be evil and hated magic and Elsa was speaking up to his ice ghost
Most of the plot developments and character choices felt so forced and again, unnecessary
The likable characters, some good/okay songs and fan service/references to the first film are the only saving grace of this
I'm not even excited about the idea of a Frozen 3 at this point, don't want them to ruin my favorite WDAS franchise any further
Olaf's Frozen Adventure was better
deadass

It bothers me that Wikipedia has TLK 2019 as the highest grossing "animated" film
SpoilerThat shit isn't even a movie

The soundtrack is good but not as good or catchy as the first
All Is Found is the standout imo, sounds like a future Disney classic
-
If Joker does it, there will be 9 billion grossers in this year (Frozen 2, TROS included)
Insane!!!

Does anyone know how to view the yearly chart of an international country on the new box office mojo?

Longer snippet of Into the Unknown

No other animated franchise has been continuously garnering critical acclaim (all 4 entries above 96%) and have each entry top its predecessor at the box office let alone 4 times (in the space of 3 decades) and have 2 $1B grossing entries
Toy Story eats alone.

Their father really reminds me of a young Walt Disney (apparently he also had two daughters in real life)
Wonder what he would've thought about current Disney (and its complete domination at the box office lol)
I think he would've loved Frozen tbh

I'm glad most publications are now considering F2 to be the highest grossing animated film and not TLK 2019
https://variety.com/2020/film/box-office/frozen-2-biggest-animated-movie-ever-disney-box-office-1203456758/
Now someone just needs to edit the highest grossing animated films wikipedia page
