  1. Was definitely missing that Bayhem level chase featured in Bad Boys II, but I was pleasantly surprised by the level of personal stakes in the movie. Did feel a bit too long and was a bit disappointed in the amount of CGI towards the end. Hopefully the next one gets a budget bigger enough to allow for more practical action in the climax.

I didn’t hate the film at all. Most of the action worked and the humor worked as well.

I’ll say this: In Bad Boys II, when Tapia reveals he’s taken Syd hostage, Marcus says “shit just got real” to Mike. In Bad Boys for Life, when Mike says the bad guys are his ex and his son, I said “shit just got real” to myself.

    B+

Reading up on the directors on this movie has me a little intrigued. Belgium born, Muslim Moroccan background pairing that have had some indie success, but that seem like they really wanted to play around in a big budget action movie like this. If they can deliver a hit from this, when so many other franchises being dug up from the same era are flopping, they should have some interesting opportunities ahead of them.

Being with Sony on this one, I wonder if they're the next to get slotted into Uncharted.

I myself appreciate they tried to keep things practical for the most part. Obviously the bit where the helicopter crashes is CGI. I guess it's just a logistical thing.

Anyway, I'm just trying to fathom this world where a new Bad Boys movie gets better reviews than a new Star Wars movie.

Far be it from me to critique Marvel Studios and Feige based on their relatively historic success, but with a movie title like this one has, it can only really go one of two ways: It will either be a brilliant visionary endeavor that pushes forward the genre (unlikely, but anything's possible), or a schlocky Hammer-esque homage to classic technicolor nightmare/"horror" with wacky performances and bad scripting.  (I love Hammer Films...but they weren't known for their scripts.)

Thus...yeah, a director doesn't really matter.  I'm sure Feige's "vision" for this is all laid out.  The title tells you everything.

Wouldn't be surprised to hear Travis Knight signed on in a matter of days (hours?).

Not even a whisper of Chewitel Ejiofor returning, either...which is an immediate check against it, for me.

I read that Chiwetel Ejiofor is directing his first movie so it seems that he may only have time to make a brief appearance.

Truthfully, I could do without Rachel McAdams returning, not because of Rachel, but there’s really nowhere for that character to go.

I didn’t get the impression that the f-bombs in this movie were a punchline that you’re supposed to laugh at. There certainly is some comedy in this movie, but that’s less to do with the language and more to do with just how pathetic a character like Howard is.

Yeah, I mean the dialogue itself in terms of what the characters are trying to say, they're not trying to crack jokes, it's just how they talk. Was he another person thinking he was getting a Sandler comedy?

Maybe I'm using wrong words, what I mean is that it attracted a load of people who thought they were going to watch something else. (whether that's Studio's fault, or audience fault)

As for the marketing itself, I haven't seen any trailer or posters or anything for this so cant comment.

Deadline suggested people didn’t like the ending.

Judging by the positive fan reviews but C+ cinemascore, that would suggest that yes, a lot of people wanted to see "the new adam sandler movie", and were disappointed it was not what they expected. Which will probably lead to shorter legs.

I don't think its a case of the film being divisive, I think its a case of bait and switch marketing. Reminds me of that Guillermo del toro movie that was a romance film but marketed as a supernatural horror flick, and it got 2x legs despite being really good.

What was bait and switch about the marketing compared to the movie? Marketing definitely did not tease a typical Adam Sandler movie.

This was always going to be divisive. It's a Safdie Brothers movie. That said, there will be enough they really loved to spread decent WOM. Should do well enough over the holidays. Thinking it can do 20M to 25M for the five day. Is A24s highest grosser still Hereditary? If so, I think this has a real shot at beating that number.

A C+ is better for a movie like Uncut Gems than it is for a movie like Cats.

Any chance this one breaks out a bit? Wondering if people that grew up with Sandler will be curious to see him in this kind of role.

They haven’t really come out for his other roles. Punch Drunk Love got a D+ Cinemascore. I guess to be fair, his other non-Happy Madison fare between that and Meyerowitz weren’t exceptionally well received critically. And Meyerowitz was a Netflix indie acquisition made two years too early. The turnout for a gritty Adam Sandler will be interesting to see, though. Because despite opening in only five theaters last weekend, it got an A- Cinemascore from those audiences.

Well... My family and I always catch a flick on Christmas Day. Admittedly, this one's a tough sell. Purposely held off on Jumanji because I assumed that would be the choice. If Star Wars is the choice, given I saw it and didn't care much for it, I could probably see this one separately.

So... Guess there's a chance. I can't imagine the choice not being Jumanji or Star Wars. Little Women, Spies In Disguise and Frozen won't be options knowing my family's taste. 1917 would've been high on the list but that one's not out yet.

Guess Cats could be an option too. My mom and sis are big on musicals.

If it is Cats, word is you should get high as a kite first.

TBH Warner Bros and Lionsgate probably could come to an agreement that in exchange for May 2021 for Matrix, Lionsgate gets a different preferred date for John Wick 4. I think March 5th 2021 could work for John Wick since WB has moved Mortal Kombat to January 2021.

I don't think Lionsgate will want to give up the box office sweet spot that make John Wick 3 successful. It feels like WB picked that date for Matrix 4 without thinking about it.

problem with SAG is that it's SAG-AFRA (sp?) so overlap with AMPAS isn't as good as it used to be. Means their picks are not shoo-in for wins unlike before AFRA merge.

SAG-AFTRA, in case you were wondering.

Variety says that due to the Oscar's preferential balloting system, he could still have a chance there. Either way, whatever.
