  3. Actually, It's not about LL's box office performance. The conversation is about questioning Soderbergh's skills or lack of skills as a distributor. That's something that needs to be addressed.
  4. Glad to see every movie in the top ten held up really good. The August movies are getting a chance to live a longer life because there is no big movie. The audience is getting a chance to checkout movies that been out three or four weeks. Maybe there just too many big movies that crowding out smaller movies.
  5. We are witnessing a cultural and technological swift. With the theatrical window is strinking and the creation of wide screen HD and 4K televisions more people are willing the wait less than three months for VOD and streaming to watch in the comforts of their homes. Every movie out right now is a "I'll wait for the video" movie, except Hitman's Bodyguard. That's not saying anything bad about these movies, these movies just lack a lot of CGI and big explosions. People want to wait to see them at home, rather than put up with other moviegoers bullshit.
  6. Soderbergh tried to pull a heist of his own. He put a commercial wide release label on LL. The problem is LL is really an artsy director cut movie, not a commercial movie with studio editing and treatment. 3000 theaters is too much for this movie, it would have been better served with two thousand or less theater. Targeting the rural areas is never a good move. Los Angeles, CA population is 7000 per sq/ml Charlotte, NC populations is 2500 per sq/ml Los Angeles average drive miles to your nearest theater is 4 miles Charolette average drive mIles to your nearest theater is 17 miles.

  8. Soderbergh is a winner and a loser on this one. His theory about distribution he prove right. The big question is, was it worth it?
  9. THB is basically an indies movie, LG only role is to distribute it in NA and the UK. Only the production companies can sell foreign rights. LG didn't produce THB. The writer said THB needs to make another $78 million to see profit, he wasn't referring to LG. He was talking about the production companies. LG will make a profit for THB, but the producers will see very little if any money. LG will get 50% ticket sell plus a 15% distributor fee before the producers see any thing. LG probably spent $35-$40 million for P&A, meaning the movie would have to make about what the article says. This is why Soderbergh retired and then came back to do self distribution. He was tired of directing and producing movies only to see distribution companies make out and he gets very little or no money. The money from Logan Lucky is coming from the theaters straight to the production companies, no middleman. This is why the big six studios are now distribution companies, that's where the money is.

  12. This is weird, but Soderbergh strategy actually worked. It made profit on opening day. The problem is he was expecting much better box office results. So, he win and lose. Another weird thing, the number one movie for the last two weekend Hitman's Bodyguard still needs to make $78 million just to break even.

  15. Maybe I'm being too hard on Soderbergh, because LL has already made profit. But I think he was expecting bigger profit.
  16. I go to a lot of movies, all I can tell you is l haven't seen any LL trailers in theaters. But I sure did see a lot of THB
  17. I think Soderbergh has now learned the hard way about late trailers. He can learn a few lessons from Hitman's Bodyguard. THB trailer was release in April and Lionsgate attached to the big summer blockbusters. The Logan Lucky trailer was nowhere to be found. When the trailer finally hit theaters it wasn't even a full trailer. Even if LL is at a profit, this was a botch distribution.
  18. But unlikely, it hard to get the rural areas to support a movie. The marketing is just overall poor for LL. I've never seen a tv ad, l've only seen a trailer one time in a theater and it wasn't a full trailer, it was like a 30 second commercial. Still haven't seen a billboard. Most of the people I know never even heard of this movie. Soderbergh marketed this movie as a limited release. He put this movie in 3000 theaters and hide it from the masses. Next time Soderbergh should stick to filmmaking and let an actual distributor do the distribution.
  19. Well that just it, that demographic wasn't interested in this movie. That same demographic are also known for not being big moviesgoers. In some of these areas people have to drive 20,30,40 miles to a theater. It not like a coastal city where there are plenty of theaters in your nieghborhood. This is why traditional distributors mainly marketed there movies in big cities. The problem with Soderbergh is that he seem to assume that big Hollywood is wrong about everything. He thought he could sell this movie in these areas because it was about them, big Hollywood knew better. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big Soderbergh fan, I think he's a great filmmaker. But just because you're a great filmmaker doesn't mean you know how to sell a movie.
  20. Apparently not, top the 30 theaters for LL was in LA and NY. Rural America did'nt show up.
  21. Opening weekend is 100% marketing. Soderbergh bad decision was to focus the marketing to the lowest populated and poorest parts of the country.Rural areas don't have enough people for a big box office hit. A lot of rural people don't even have money to go to a movie.It's amazing it made as much as it did.If your are selling a product you have to go where the people live, people that can also afford your product. How do you expect the masses to turn out when you don't marketed to the masses. Soderbergh is a very good director and he is good at financing his film. But he knows nothing about film marketing.
