Honestly I think it may be better for mcu if Gunn can make DC good. He would only have control of like one movie per few years over at marvel, increasing GA interest in the genre as a whole may be more valuable.

So far post endgame we haven’t really seen critics be any harsher towards mcu movies. We’ve simply seen worse mcu movies (as indicated by a variety of robust non critic metrics as well). SC and NWH are the two with stellar GA response… and the 2 above 90. Total agreement. Eternals and QM are the only two flat Bs in the entire franchise… and the only two rottenes. Total agreement. WF did well(-but-notSC/NWH-well) with critics, and with non critics. DS2 and L&T were shaky-but-not-as-bad-as-Et/QM with critics, and same with normies. In infinity saga, there was a pretty strong relationship between critic reception and non critic reception for the mcu — unusually strong, for a blockbuster action franchise. So far in multiverse saga we have seen… that unusually strong agreement continue, basically just as strong as it was before. There may come a time where that relationship diverges notably. Maybe that time will begin with Gotg3, though there is no particular reason to think so just yet. But until such a time, this “why are critics harsher on mcu now” discourse is absurd, since there”s no real indication they are being harsher at all!

There wasn’t “something off” with them, lol. They had consistently high scores because they were consistently solidly put together and enjoyable. Some people’s s inability to grasp such a basic situation is baffling.

Not really any need to analyze these too closely with actual reviews so soon, but my feeling is we needed 90+ and we’ll probably get it

We haven’t had any movies that remotely required any D+ content to enjoy. DS2 was connected to WV but arguably even worse for WV fans because you knew that her plot was bullshit instead of being able to roll with it. CM2 and Cap:NWO will be the big tests since CM2 connect to SI, MM, and somewhat WV whereas Sam made his Cap debut in FWS. I am sure both movies have been written and tested with audiences who haven’t seen any shows in mind.

I think this is pretty much the whole shebang. Issue being that the entire saga central concept may make it difficult to recover that quality to previous sterling levels. But stand-alone good movies should still be able to go respectable grosses when compared to saga 1, perhaps with more muted openings and higher legs than if franchise hype remained elevated.

I am not dead, fwiw. Just figured there would be a lot of doom posts around here that I strongly disagreed with and wasn’t in the mood to argue about but that would resolve itself near release. I haven’t been following this middle portion of sales very closely but I have been keeping an eye on the bat Sacto comp which is sort of the only good size+genre+reception comp (as long as Gotg3 is, in fact, good — a key variable still unknown for a few days or so). Despite the bat EA which, as usual, I am annoyed by.
