  1. Mank/Chicago7 might give Nomadland some competition. I'd wait and see if it wins the people's choice award at TIFF next week to see if it's also crowd-pleasing and not just a critics/prestige movie. Zhao is probably getting a director nom at this point tho so that's gonna incredible.

although if the only choices the Academy are left with are Nomadland or a Netflix movie. I agree the former would have better odds. but it's 7 months away so a lot could change. I hope Nomadland maintains its buzz.

also Mank shouldn't release in Oct as that's way too early imo.

Nomadland rises with excellent reviews while Ammonite's are looking mixed at best. Acting nominations are likely the most the latter can hope for.

Ammonite needed stronger reviews for acting nods to happen imo. could play out like Mary Queen of Scots so maybe costume nods but that's not sure either

  3. with Winslet out I think

    Frances McDormand - Nomadland

Viola Davis - Ma Rainey's Black Bottom

Andre Day - The United States vs. Billie Holiday

    Jennifer Hudson - Respect

    Amy Adams - Hillbilly Elegy

    alt:

    Michelle Pfeiffer - French Exit

Vanessa Kirby - Pieces of Woman/The World To Come

Dune will probably end up going to the last weekend of February right in time for the Oscars deadline.

does WB really care that much about Dune oscar prospects? chances are it's at best a bp nominee+ tech only winner. they should delay it further in 2021 so it can have a better box office. villeneuve said he wants to make a 2nd movie so I'd think they would rather prioritize its finical aspects first.

for Oscars WB have Tenet for below the line categories and Judas and the Black Messiah for acting/bp/screenplay

you can throw in WW84 for VFX too

It's not an exaggeration. It is just as safe as, say, going to the supermarket.

You expose yourself to risks all the time. You want to say it is "risky" to go to the cinema. Even though the statistical probability of such action causing your death or severe harm, is EXTREMELY low / unlikely.

You take risks all the time. When you get in your car you take the risk that you could crash the car and die. But because the chance of that happening is so low, you decide the benefit outweighs the risk.

The same is true for going to the shop, going to the cinema, going to the pub, whatever.

There is always a risk when you interact with others, that you could catch a flu. And a small portion of people who catch flu sadly die. But it is unlikely to happen in any event.

as i stated it depends on the pandemic situation in your area. if you were driving in an area with a high rate of car accidents and people don't pay attention to traffic. would you feel as safe as if you were driving in place where people drive normally? I don't disagree that it's safe to go to a cinema but it's more relative than you think.

btw when I said as risky. I meant risk of catching the virus. not risk of dying/severe harm.

It's perfectly safe to go to a cinema. If it was dangerous to go to the cinema they would not be allowed to open.

if it was perfectly safe to go to a cinema they would be not be mandating masks. it's as risky as any other in-door activity. but to call it "perfectly safe" is an exaggeration and depends on the pandemic situation in your area. and whether you were already infected and or have been vaccinated.

good trailer. This movie will bomb if it releases in theaters. They should release it to HBO MAX and have it become an HBO Max series rather than a movie series

it will also bomb on HBO Max. just because they can hide the fact that it bombed because they're not obligated (and no is) to release streaming numbers doesn't make it any better.

besides someone on r/boxoffice mentioned that HBO Max isn't available to all americans so that doesn't help as well. (if it's true)

  8. cool trailer and looks visually pleasing. although I still have no idea what the plot is about but I'm loving the Zendaya/Chalamet shots. Denis Villeneuve is my fav director so i have blind faith in anything he does but this looks quite different than his earlier works. in terms of scale it's different than Arrival or BR2049

I think I will start reading the novel before this comes out in December/January/February.

For a studio sure (like you said regardless of the movie they could all start with 2 of 4 in, maybe that the rules are even irrelevant for them).

Imagine if a movie Locke was considered an American movie, would he be ineligible in the best picture category ?

the tom hardy one? it would pass standard B as it had a female editor and it was distributed by A24 so I imagine they had some diversity in the marketing department. and if they didn't they should.

thinking back on these rules they seem too lenient to make an impact but still a step in the right direction I guess.

  10. these criteria don't really seem that hard to meet so not sure why so many people are upset by them. even Joker would meet like 2 out of 4 categories. not sure about the audience development or industry access but they had

Zazie Beetz as supporting for on-screen rep. (also the subject matter) and Hildur Guðnadóttir as composer for the creative behind the scenes criteria.

  11. 42 (2013) 6/10: good Chadwick Boseman performance in an otherwise bland and conventional biopic.

    Being John Malkovich (1999) 7/10

    Onward (2020) 7/10

    Wild Rose (2018) 7/10

    Adaptation (2001) 8/10

I'm Thinking of Ending Things (2020) 8/10 : a bit too abstract for me but the atmosphere and the performances carry the movie for me.

    Sunset Boulevard (1950) 8/10

    The 400 Blows (1959) 8/10

Day of Wrath (1943) 8/10: one of the most brutal religious witch-hunt movies i've seen and impressive cinematography for its time.

Synecdoche, New York (2008) 9/10: most relatable movie I've seen in a while. Hoffman is consistently amazing in everything I've seen from him and this might be my fav of his (or at least on par with the Master)
