I'm an ancient BOT member who mostly just lurks here these days but wanted to +1 this.

Mario's success seems to me seems like Wonder Woman 2017's in that regard-- and even WW's opening was deflated somewhat by WB wasting the first legit big-screen appearance of the character in BvS. But the movie ended up taking off because it was representative of everything people liked about the Wonder Woman character, just done really well. Considering how many ironic or comedic takes on Wonder Woman almost got made leading up to that movie, it's kind of amazing the movie they landed on didn't reinvent the wheel.

I think a movie set in Detective Pikachu's Pokemon City that was actually about Ash/May/Brock would've been twice as big as Detective Pikachu ended up being. From a visual/verisimilitude perspective, the world of that movie was on target (and I presume why they're now developing a sequel), but you need to make a legit live-action Pokemon movie played straight before you do anything like Pikachu talking. Hiring Ryan Reynolds to voice him a couple years after Deadpool feels like the people producing a Pokemon movie not having faith in a Pokemon movie. This plagued the original Mario movie too, and why the new one is both incredibly basic and successful as a movie-- it plays into every major association people have with the property.

The LEGO Movie almost feels like the exception to this idea because the association people have with LEGO is building them, not any of the characters. So that movie needed to feel as new and inventive as building a LEGO set is.

Eh, the release date wasn’t a big problem. The big problem was WB said “Hey Pokémon fans, haven’t you always dreamed of a movie where Pikachu talks and is actually Deadpool!?!?”

Like what in the actual hell convinced them that was the way to go? They are absurdly lucky the movie somehow ended up w as solid of a script as it did or it would have been a bomb for the ages.

How was the release date not a big problem. A week after Endgame came out which still was dominating all the big screens so Pikachu couldn't have them for its opening weekend. John Wick Chapter 3 overperforming, then Aladdin the following week coming takes all the big screens as Endgame finally starts to calm down.

It absolutely was the release date above all else.

  3. For the love of God the main reason DP did not do as well as people expected is cause it came out at one of the worst times of the year and everyone was still focusing solely on Endgame and did not foresee it still in it's second weekend being a monster. Endgame still had all the best screens, Pikachu was forced to play second fiddle and that wasn't even counting what was coming the following week and then the 18th of May.

Pikachu was dealt a bad hand by WB.

  4. The Biggest thing that ruined Detective Pikachu ultimately was it's placement releasing the week after the biggest movie of all time, Endgame came out. That was a very dumb thing to do by WB. I am convinced if they would have released it literally anywhere else it would have worked.

No one expected Endgame to be as massive as it was, especially the second weekend.

I envy the poor sap who has to make a coherent movie story out of that mess lmao

The first game is actually pretty simple to understand. It's KH2 where it goes to another level...

Also you act as if the Mario movie had a story...

  6. And you know how Disney competes with the NCU. Awaken the sleeping giant known as Kingdom Hearts.

Market it as a grand adventure through classic Disney Worlds(2 or 3) and also have it be marketed as the big return of Disney juggernauts Mickey Mouse, Donald, and Goofy to the big screen. Kids would eat that shit up for breakfast and so would parents not even knowing what Kingdom Hearts is or who Sora is.

Whilst I am happy for Mario's behemoth success, I hope Illumination stay right away from Zelda or tbh any other non-Mario Nintendo properties. I think maybe one of or perhaps all of a Donkey Kong/Yoshi/Luigi spn off will happen but I think I speak for all Zelda fans when I don't think an Illumination-style movie would work at all.

Oh you already know Donkey Kong Country and Luigi's Mansion are for sure going to happen.

I think illumination can do good for other Nintendo Properties though like Pokemon for sure though WB is doing that.
