In an interview with the new York Times Gerwig kinda confirm "Barbie 2. No thanks".

Predictable but She set a world WB can use to make a new interesting movie with someone else involved.

Asking if Robbie and Gosling will be on It. Probably with just some cameo -secondary role.

Admirable if she sticks by this. But yeah, WB will definitely find a way to profit more off this movie, be it with a sequel or some sort of spinoff.

Here are some inflation adjusted numbers. Avengers: Endgame in particular is extremely impressive, since it had zero holiday boost and zero summer boost.

$49M for The Force Awakens (holiday)

    $46M for Black Panther (holiday)

    $42M for Avengers: Endgame (non-holiday)

Black Panther achieving that all by itself (even with a holiday) is still wild to me. I mean he was a B-list comic character at best so to be in that company with his first movie is most impressive.

Sure, but expecting female audiences to be content with Disney Princess live action adaptations and female comic book heroes is unrealistic.

I don't think anyone said you had to be content with just those movies but dismissing them as not being for women when their success was due in large part to its female audience is just wrong.

Yep, even movies like Wonder Woman are comic book and action movies that have a pretty even balance between gender. Plus Wonder Woman is the premiere female superhero.

Wonder Woman was still heavily promoted as a movie for women and it had romance! TLM was also heavily promoted as a movie for women, even if it is a family movie. It's a stretch to say it doesn't count.

As for Captain Marvel, all of its numbers should have an asterisk because of how heavily it was promoted as a tie in to an Avengers movie.

Women probably are underserved at the box office, but TLM just came out in May, it's not like we have to go back 10 years to think of a blockbuster movie aimed primarily toward a female audience!

Exactly. I noticed she got some pushback for that take and rightly so.

Barbie performing very similar to TDK across the board from Thursday night previews all the way to epic numbers on Sunday & Monday. Seems to be trending as a lock for $500+ million domestic.

What do you think for Oppenheimer's Monday number?

Very curious to see if it continues to perform similarly to TDK. I do recall someone saying yesterday that there would be a sizable Tuesday drop? Interesting to see if that comes to fruition because they would have an effect on numbers through the rest of the week leading into the weekend.

You know who else was going to be the lead of a WB film and also named Barbara?

The fact that this was considered unwatchable while The Flash was hyped as one of the greatest CBMs ever... Barbie being a bit hit doesn't mean I've stopped questioning just how incompetent the folks at WB are.

It's definitely too early to talk about $600 million for Barbie, Imho. If the movie OW is $162m as Deadline report than with similiar legs to TDK 15 years ago, it would finish with around $545 million. Audience scores on RT and on IMDb are not as overwhelming as Batman's. For now, $500m is the target.

Agreed. Said the same last night. The Monday drop is just crazy if accurate but still, we should wait at least until the weekend before declaring Barbie over Mario. Lol

Studios looking for sequels on successful stuff isn't even a "current era" thing; they've done this for ages.

I didn't say it was exclusive to the current era. The point was more so that prequels, sequels, reimaginings are more popular than ever, leading people to believe there is little to no room for original projects. Hence, why some are eager for a new era.

  10. I'm sure it's been said multiple times already but still, quite ironic that Barbie will more than likely end up with a sequel, fitting right in with all the other franchises now. Not a knock against it at all. It's just been perplexing to see people claim it's the beginning of a new era when it fits comfortably in the current one.

  11. I'll take a wait and see approach on The Marvels. I think it's more of a mystery. Good reviews, good wom could lead to it doing better than expected. Either way, I think it's unfair to compare to it the first CM, given the obvious built in advantage that had nothing to do with the movie's quality or even Captain Marvel's popularity.

Wow, a ranking I almost completely agree with (except Begins where Dunkirk is, Dunkirk lower, haven’t seen Opp/Following).

Love seeing The Prestige in the top 3 but Interstellar (my number 1) all the way at number 8 displeases me.

No, just a lowball Sunday estimate (and an likely over performance) It’s going to come up a good amount with actuals tomorrow

Ok. But is that based on how Sunday is looking or just a feeling? Lol I thought I might have missed an update that was posted.

What if felt and feel exactly.

Pre-Endgame, the MCU felt fresh, exciting and it was always building up to something (IW/EG).

After Endgame, the MCU feels tired, overstuffed and like homework.

Endgame was literally the perfect ending for the whole MCU in my opinion.

For people who say this, I'm curious as to what you all expected to happen. For Disney/Marvel to take a break and reboot in a few years? The MCU reached a peak in 2018-2019 and what's happened afterwards is only natural imo. Can't stay at that insane level forever. That there has been some dips/misfires since then doesn't mean it should have ended. Lets not forget that they had misfires before that peak. Everything wasn't perfect, every movie wasn't making tons of money. I can see how the tv shows have made it seem overstuffed and like homework but they'll almost certainly be cutting back on them now. I have to say though, I'm glad to have gotten shows like TFATWS  and Ms Marvel and movies like Shang-Chi and Eternals (deserved better) and Wakanda Forever (even with its flaws, its still near top of the MCU for me). I think there's still things to be excited about too, with Daredevil coming, Deadpool looking like a big hit and if they get things sorted out with Fantastic Four and Blade. Things may be messy now but I'm looking forward to seeing how it all plays out.

Millennial directors who are household names.

I don't think it's a stretch to say that most people who've watched Barbie still have no idea who Greta is. The GA is not that deep into online discourse. I think it takes years and multiple hits for a director to build up enough recognition to be known to the general audience. Greta is not there, not even close imo. An argument could be made for Peele, as he at least has been able to generate hype for movies that are genunely original.

I reaaally don't think Greta Gerwig's name had any effect whatsoever on Barbie's opening.

Saw a thread on Twitter asking if Gerwig and Peele are the only directors of their generation who might be considered a household name and I was just baffled, especially as it came from a critic. The idea that Greta is a household name is pure silliness. Peele is even a big reach but being one half of Key and Peele probably makes him a little more known.

I still haven't watched the first one, even though I use HBO Max more than any streaming service and have seen Dune pop up constantly as a recommended movie in the app. Lol

Add me to the list. lol I have zero interest in watching Dune or the sequel.
