  1. I agree that the setting could have been a problem for WW in certain markets. The 80s are close to the 90s which was the setting for Captain Marvel. So the setting should be less of a problem for WW84. Now the only question will be if the story and characters in WW84 will play as well as the story of Captain Marvel obviosly did. I have faith that Americans will love it but how it plays in China and the rest of Asia will decide how high it can reach.
  2. It will be interesting to see if WB and Patty thought about the poor reception of WW overseas when they made the script for WW84 and if they added things to WW84 that they think will play well overseas. More and better CGI action scenes and stuff like that. And if so it will be interesting to see if they manage to make the sequel more loved overseas than the first one.
  3. The point is would Captain Marvel really have opened that big with over 150M without the connected universe? Captain Marvel would have been a hit whatever the case but i think it being part of a highly loved franchise is what sets it apart majorly from Wonder Woman. And yes Wonder Woman 84 getting over a billion is more a hope for me rather than a prediction, to do that it would need to break out much more overseas than the first one and that would be hard to predict now. I do think it can gross over 400M in the US again. But all in all much will depend on how good the movie and its WOM is.
  4. I am already salty that Captain Marvel made more than the first female superhero. But to be fair Wonder Woman came after Batman v Superman while Captain Marvel came after infinity war. I'm hoping WW84 can join the 1 billion club.
  5. What? Superman 1974 and Batman 89 were the first comic book blockbuster hits.
  6. Marvel really has no problem at all to make unknown superheroes box office hits. When a universe is connected its much easier to sell in these obscure characters with the audiences. Shazam doesn't have that advantage.
  7. I think WB only pulls these previews for movies they think lacks hype. For the likes of Wonder Woman and Batman previews should not be needed at all due to the hype levels being much bigger.
  8. Seems like introducing the rock as black Adam would be the only way for Shazam to warrent a sequel. Add the rock and more action scenes and the sequel could do better overseas.
  9. Chinese reaction to Shazam seems very strange to me. Anyone who has seen any trailer or marketing for Shazam would clearly have seen that it is a very childish movie. So why did these people even show up to Shazam if they didn't want to watch a childish superhero movie? Going to a Shazam movie and then be angry that the movie is childish is as rational as going to a horror movie and then be angry that the movie was scary.
  10. I think WB expected a bit more from Shazam. Right now it seems that the best Shazam can hope for is a very small profit. And the reaction from Asia means that it may not be worth it for WB to get a sequel because the fastest growing market is rejecting the movie. I don't see any other option but for WB to have the rock as Black Adam directly for the possible sequel. His star power may be the only thing that can propel Shazam to greater hights.
  11. Shazam is just DC continuing the trend of first taking a step forward and then backwards once again. DC struggles with making several hits in a row, instead they fluctuate from success to underperformers all the time. So Shazam even though it got great reviews is a massive step backwards for DC, it ends the momentum Aquaman built up and shows that DC can't easily do what Marvel does all the time by introducing unknown characters and make them popular. Shazam was supposed to be a new hit superhero for DC, but the response to the character is way off from the general public.
  12. Unplanned is doing very well. Its selling more tickets than Shazam this past day.
  13. Shazam is selling so badly on presales that it will have minimal impact on Captain Marvel. This is good for Captain Marvel's legs that Shazam is posed for a very weak opening.
  14. Captain Marvel will benefit this weekend by Shazam selling so badly at the presales. So Captain Marvel will have a soft drop due to a weak Shazam opening.
  15. With the way tickets are selling Shazam can even earn less than a 40M opening.
  16. With DC only making solo movies they don't have the advantage Marvel has being interconnected. People who loved Aquaman won't show up to Shazam because by both movies being standalones many don't even think Shazam and Aquaman has anything to do with each other.
  17. But it shows how low Shazam will open at. Normally for a superhero movie the movie would always be top 5 in tickets sold at least days before release. For Shazam we are looking at not even opening to 40M.
  18. There is no way you can spin a low budget anti abortion movie outselling a superhero movie days before release as something normal. Shazam is selling uniquely terrible for a superhero movie and its time to acknowledge that fact.
  19. Can you explain how a low budget anti abortion movie can outsell a superhero blockbuster days before release?
  20. Shazam is selling so badly a few days before release that even low budget Unplanned has sold more the last 24 hours than Shazam: https://www.movietickets.com/box-office If a movie like Shazam only sells about 1 % of all tickets a few days before opening you have a bomb on your hands.
  21. So because DC makes one very succesful movie they are comparable to Marvel that has every year pumps out several very succesful movies? DC has to do a lot more than one lucky hit. Justice league bombed which shows that even the biggest DC characters together lack box office appeal. While everyone is clamoroung to watch Marvel's biggest stars on film. Shazam would always get crushed because of its release date. Shazam is releasing this week but everyone is just focusing on Endgame and buying tickets to Endgame this week. The only hope for Shazam would have been to movie it to another date.
  22. You can't really compare Marvel and DC, they are the same genre but the difference in fanbase and popularity of the two is enormous. Simply put Marvel and its characters are miles more popular than DC and will always crush DC at the box office.
  23. Shazam won't make much more than 400M. Joker has a good chance to beat that figure.
