At this point, I had all 9 theaters for TLK. So, start taking that comp with a slight grain of salt for now. But anyways, ticket sales are flat from yesterday as you can see. It's still behind IT 2's pace, but not by much. The gap is growing though. With Aurora, I don't know whether Joker would be ahead or not. But to tie with IT by Thursday, Joker needs to really pick it up. Accounting for Aurora, Joker needs to outsell IT by exactly 500 by Thursday. The chances seem pretty slim.

A decent jump, but nothing close to IT 2's jump on this day. At least the comps are still increasing though. If I were able to adjust right now, both of these comps would most definitely be over 7M.

A question about comps. Is it simply a matter of going and seeing how much a previous movie made on that day/same time during its own run? Wheres the beat place to find previous movie info? Or is it just going back through this weekend thread?
Comps are you comparing how much tickets were sold at the same point between different movies you tracked.
Basically, you’re doing movie X tickets sold divided by movie Y tickets sold at the same amount of days before their previews, and multiply that by movie Y’s preview gross.
For example, let’s say Joker sold 100 tickets ten days before previews started, and IT 2 sold 200. You’d do 100 divided by 200, then multiply that by how much IT 2 made on preview night, 10.5M. You’d get 5.25M
Sometimes theaters won’t post showtimes for movie X at the same time as they did for movie Y during their presales. So, you can go a step further and do adjusted comps.
Going back to the example, let’s say IT 2 had showtimes for theater 5, but Joker didn’t yet. So, you’d take the 200 tickets that IT 2 sold, and subtract how many theater 5 sold. We’ll say theater 5 sold 20 tickets. So you do 200-20, and get 180. Then you do the regular comp process. 100 divided by 180, multiply that by 10.5M. And you get 5.83M
If you’re not already, make sure you’re saving the presales data you’re posting on here. It looks like you’re posting enough information that you could just go back through here, but it’ll be a lot easier to have it all in one place.

Art of Racing in the Rain comp: 444K
Lion King comp: 706K
I'm inclined to believe the Dora and Lion King comp. Using the Smallfoot IM, it would have a range of 19-20.4M for the weekend. I'll just go with what TLK and Dora says, and go with 730K. Definitely not confident in that though.
Also, @Eric!, interesting how our final numbers are pretty similar, but our comps are so different. The difference for Dora is definitely because of the large Hispanic presence here, but I'm not sure about Art of Racing in the Rain.

This morning, tracking showed that Disney’s sequel Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is set to open on Oct. 18 to $50M, while Sony’s Zombieland: Double Tap is on course to do $25M.
Meanwhile, tracking is still sees Warner Bros. Joker next Friday as October’s biggest opener of all-time with $84M, besting previous champ Venom ($80.2M).
In regards to Oct. 11 releases, updated projections show Paramount’s Will Smith movie from director Ang Lee, Gemini Man, strong with African American crowd with $29M-$30M. MGM’s animated feature release of The Addams Family is also looking great with $28M.-

I’d like to get in on the action for joker! What do I need to do to keep you guys updated on my city
Pick a theater, or multiple theaters if you’d prefer. Use word, excel, or an alternative equivalent to these two to record the data. Use Fandango, Atom tickets, or the theater’s website to go through each showtime and count the number of seats in the theater, and the number of seats sold. Record them in word or excel. Below, I have examples of how I did it with Excel and Word. Try to pick a time that will best suit you everyday so it will be recorded every 24 hours.
If you think you might want to do this for more movies, I’d recommend you make a separate word document to record the count for each day.
For example:
Joker:
Day 2: 1(seats sold)/5(total seats in theater(s))Day 1: 5/10
The day number being the number of days until previews start.
If you do multiple theaters, I’d even record the individual tickets sold for each theater.
Joker:Day 2: Three theaters: 1, 0, 0: 1/5(No theater X or theater Y)
Day 1: Five theaters: 1, 0, 0, 0, 4: 5/10
Make sure you record the theater counts in the same order every time so you know which ones are which. And record which theaters don’t have showtimes that day. I bold everything but the individual theater counts so it’s clear that they are the individual theaters.
Excel example(imagine there are borders around each box):

If you haven't already heard, Century Aurora XD will not be showing Joker. For IT 2, that theater sold almost 13% of the tickets out of the 9 theaters. So, it messes things up a bit. I won't be able to adjust for that theater until the last couple days because I only recently started saving individual theater counts. But I'll continue to do regular comps, and hopefully my other nearby theaters will pick up some of that loss. Just take them with a grain of salt.
IT 2 comp: 5.13M
Adjusted Lion King comp: 5.82M
For TLK, I didn't track the Aurora theater at this point. So the comp is probably a better look at what it's looking like in Denver right now.

Also, are the lines on the charts not showing up for anyone? It was doing that for me yesterday, but magically appeared a couple hours after I posted.

Yeah, 200M probably won’t be for 5+ years in my estimation. But it’s still roughly the same ballpark as an actual OD that has happened, which is kind of wild.
4 years ago the OD record was 91M, and it had been the same for over 4 years by then, so my point was just that even very recently 200M OD would have sounded completely out of calibration with reality. As much above the record as a 350M OD in the present.
Still, I don’t think anything will match the hype of Endgame for a long time. Even if something did within the next 5ish years, will ticket price inflation be enough? Nobody really knows. But average ticket price growth has slowed down quite a bit. It took 10 years for the average ticket price to increase by 27% from 2008-2018. Before that, it increased 53% from 1998-2008. And only 12% from 2013-2018.
https://www.boxofficemojo.com/about/adjuster.htm
I think Endgame is the peak of the MCU. It’ll still be really successful though. TFA is the peak of Star Wars. I don’t think Avatar will reach the heights of the MCU or Star Wars. So, unless ticket prices go through the roof, I really don’t think a 200M OD is possible for a long long time. Unless the Avatar movies surprise, what could be more hyped than the return of Star Wars or the culmination of an 11 year saga?

Amusingly a 200M OD is actually no longer in that “lolol, this number is so utterly impossible for any movie” realm anymore. That’s only 27% above the current OD record 🤣
Nah there’s no way any movie in the foreseeable future is gonna get close. Only 5 movies have broken 85M, and they were: Endgame, TFA, IW, TLJ, and Deathly Hallows Part 2. And only 4 with 100M+, Avengers and Star Wars movies. TRoS is the only movie that actually has a shot of joining that list for a while. And there’s definitely no movie that will reach Endgame levels of hype for a very long time, much less even get close to 200M.

Comps are worthless right now. One theater has yet to put up showings, and multiple theaters don't look like they've posted their full lineup yet. So, there's probably still a lot more to come.
Also, are the lines on the charts not showing up for anyone? It was doing that for me yesterday, but magically appeared a couple hours after I posted.

I will say what I'm doing right now is going back through the thread and compiling all the data into a spreadsheet. I will probably go back as far as Pulse Dying (#RIP) since that's when most people jumped on board.
(Also - if people have their OWN spreadsheets with their past data, and want to forward them to me, that would quicken the process.)
I kiiiiinda of like everything together in this thread. Maybe we could just pin some posts and have that be the overall post we update with final results?
IDK. What do other people think?
I think it’s better to keep it all here. This thread is already pinned to the top anyways.
And I’ll be able to send my data to you in a couple hours

Actuals 1.5, 1.3, 2.1. While my comps weren’t the best, I do kind of want to pat myself on the back for knowing my market well enough to know when/how to adjust those comps. Shoulda gone a bit higher with Astra (followed the First Man comp slightly more) but oh well.
great job to everyone who had some pretty great estimates in this thread last night
Not too bad in Denver either. Expect for Ad Astra.
Weekend Thread: Abominable 20.85, Downton 14.5 (-53%), Hustlers 11.5 (-32%), It2 10.4 (-39%), Ad Astra 10.1 (-47%), Rambo 8.6 (-55%), Judy 3.1
