Deadline's latest weekend box office update + Avatar 2 domestic OW blurb
"Also, with 20th Century Studios/Disney’s Avatar: The Way of Water set to conquer all business next weekend with a potential $200M domestic start, nobody wants to waste the marketing dollars to play in front of that, especially when moviegoing doesn’t pick up until after Christmas, when there’s zero holiday distractions and kids go on break."

Is it even possible for it to open that high in China with half the cinema's shut?.
I'll tell you somehting, if it opens that high, its doing 800mil easy.
Chinese cinemas for at 59% capacity as of yesterday, I believe! Things are fickle, but there's reason to believe it will continue improving until the day of release.

Wow forgot Avatar 2 releases way before us in CHina.. These numbers look great that you posted. What are you hoping it will make there Brother Dragon Caine
This is just the presale as of about 6 hours ago today, I believe the movie releases on the 16th in China and the U.S. I'd love to see an overall tally of $600-700m just from China. The low end feels attainable, while the high end is still possible but would be so awesome.

As of three hours ago, Avatar 2 hit $8.5m in China ticket presales, best presale number of 2022, outpacing The Battle of Lake Changjin II. Could hit $600m in China or better if WOM is great.

they usually just auto embed. If they don’t, make sure to “clear formatting” at the bottom when you post the link. Thanks! At the risk of sounding like a boomer, how do I "clear formatting?"

How do you embed tweets on this site?

Holy sh*** i got goosebumps. First glimpse of the weeknd song
The footage they chose for this sneak, once again, looks sensational. Jury's out on the song imo, though I love the choral overlays.

I think DUNE level reviews is the likeliest outcome right now. Will be very pleased if the MC score ends up in TGM territory, but mid-70s feels right. Extremely good for a spectacular, emotional holiday release. If Dune could snag a BP nom, TWoW feels even more likely.

Well you can tell he doesnt want Avatar 2 to be huge so hes lowballing it to 160s lol. Im thinking at least 20-50 M more than that for OW1
$160m would still be an excellent domestic OW. I'll be shocked if Avatar 2 opens to $200m+ considering how leggy it's likely to be.

Sorry in advance for not knowing how to embed on this site, but more extremely positive reactions from critics who have written for Collider, HCA, Awards Watch, and Variety/Ebert Voices/The Playlist/IndieWire/Vanity Fair:

Telegraph and Guardian hating this.. interesting.
Peter Bradshaw hated the first one, so the Guardian reaction checks out. Telegraph critic (different one at the time) gave OG Avatar a 3/5. So neither outlet was predisposed to the original it seems, though obviously the Telegraph critic is different

How long until (totally not paid) reactions?
7 minutes ago, Flamengo81 said:So... at which time are the reactions supposed to be released?
6pm EST, though reactions will be filtering in all night, since a bunch of different-timed screenings are happening today and the movie's so long lol

It just started hitting me that people are actually seeing this film, a decade-plus in the making, today. Incredible. Yes, I'm really hoping for fantastic reactions, but in Cameron we trust. LFG!!!

Reactions in approx 11 hours from now.
We've already had around 4-5 and they've been extremely positive, remember guys! better than the first movie, visually stunning / breathtaking and emotional!Where are these reactions? Or are you referring to what the cast has said? I gotta track them down haha

Evidently there is a critics screening in NYC on Tuesday for the film. Not sure what time but some reactions may leak. Apologies if this has already been posted.
The social media embargo breaks tomorrow, so I don't think it'll be a leak, but will instead arrive right on time at 6pm EST.

Haha yeah, Deadline is not exactly a precise calculator for incoming grosses, but I thought it was a cool blurb to show that they're considering the possibility. Agreed with XXR that it would need some insane walkups. I'm still banking on $180-190m, which, let's be clear, would be a fantastic result.
