Falling below expectations is not doing great. WC no excuse, there are no games atm. AVATAR's success was always going to depend on WoM, so these are decent numbers, but certainly not great. We'll know where its heading in a couple of weeks.
Nobody's claiming WC is affecting current numbers, but obviously it's going to diminish Sunday's international figures a bit. The extreme COVID upturn in China the past few days has been insane, I truly wonder how this would've performed in China in an open, healthy market

On RT? And verified or all audience? Sorry can't check at the moment but that's a fantastic number either way

TBH Cameron is at fault. He said that the film needs to make 2 billion to break even. Which means that fans foolishly expecting 2.5-3 billion. There's no doubt there will be an overreaction whatever happens this weekend. Probably a 475-500m WW start. Which is decent. It could go anywhere from there. WC final going to deflate its Sunday. Buckle up, it's a marathon, not a sprint.
Cameron's comment was also hyperbole, but yeah, I agree with all your points. Uncharted waters ahead.

80 on RT and 69 on MC. Hopefully it won't fall into the 70s. Meh start overseas but let's wait until Sunday.
It's definitely going to fall into the 70s based on how many reviews still have to come in.

So when they say this needs 2 billion to break even does that include the ancillary market?
It's not $2 billion. The movie's budget is approx. $350m, with $400m being a possible high end. General rule of thumb for blockbusters at 2.5x to breakeven puts TWoW at $875m-1b.

I liked the trailers but I was also always going to see this so I'm probably not the right guy to say if it was the right approach.
Same here. All three trailers were great for me and very evocative, but that's not going to work for everyone I guess. This is going to be a very fascinating run to track. I'm still as excited as ever to see it tomorrow.

A real shame about all of these converging factors -- snowstorm in the NE plus no inherent spoiler/story rush to see it OW, then a very popular WC Sunday, then Christmas Eve and NYE for the next two Saturdays. Really unsure of performance here.
-
China is going through it again. It's a miracle it was even allowed to premiere there to make any money. Shame, between the opening weekend snowstorm in the NE, crazy popular world cup matchup, Christmas Eve Saturday, NYE Saturday, etc.

Cross post from the Avatar thread
My first impressions minutes after I exited the theater:
I had a fine time. Just fine.
Might be in the minority here, but personally I liked A1 better.
I couldn't care about most of the characters, only Lo Ak and Spider were interesting to me.
Also, I thought some characters looked too similar and had a hard time trying to understand who was who.
The first movie's pacing is top tier and I always get hooked from minute 1 until the end. With Way of Water, there were a few times where I just wanted to move to the next scene.
I would say that the movie ends on a high note tho.Just like everyone else, I thought the last 30 mins were amazing and easily my favorite part of the movie.
Who did you care about in the first Avatar? I only saw it for the first time in theaters this year, so without nostalgia, I wasn't particularly emotionally invested.

Let's batten down the hatches, friends. This thread will probably be a historic one in one way or another.
-
Yeah, pretty telling that Avatar 2 is doing great with awards groups so far, yet not one has nominated it for Score. We'll get 'em next time.
-
I actually watched Avatar for the first time with the re-release in theaters this year, and enjoyed it very much (8/10), but the third act didn't blow me away. It was supremely well shot, satisfying, and featured fluid camerawork and choreography which is refreshing compared to the near-nonexistent choreography in many blockbusters today, but I didn't feel like the scale was absurd, and I wasn't emotionally connected as deeply as I had hoped. So I'm really surprised by some of these "lack of scale in 3rd act" comments for TwoW. Looking forward to seeing it on Friday!

Who’s ready for freezing rain/snow on Thursday and Friday night in the Northeast!
Yeah, I'm getting nervous as a NY resident who has tickets for a group of 10 reserved for Friday night lol
We'll make it work no matter what, but not everyone is as dedicated to seeing this opening weekend as we are...

It's looking like some unpleasant weather in the northeast tomorrow, which is not going to help the walk up crowd.
I'm in the greater Toronto area, and it's looking like freezing rain and snow. That's "stay home" weather unless you've got something urgent.
I'm not sure how it's manifesting a bit further south in NE in the States. A few degrees warmer and its just rain, but, also not ideal for walk ups.
Yup, awful weather tomorrow and not great Friday in Central NY

Avatar: The Way of Water received the following Critics Choice Award nominations:
- Best Picture
- Best Director (list of 10 directors so pretty useless category tbh, I suspect Cameron is in the top 5 though)
- Best Editing
- Best Cinematography
- Best Production Design
- Best Visual Effects

Critics Choice Award nominations drop in 17 minutes. With good but not great reviews, I'm curious if TwoW still makes it in. I imagine it still has a strong shot in Picture and Director, as they always do 10 nominees for Picture and up to 6 for Director I believe

A- Cinemascore and $144m OW incoming I guess, although if the GA prefers this movie to the first (unlike what the Avatar 1 fans in the thread seem to be feeling so far), it could tick up to an A for sure.
-
So what are we looking at here, $130-150m domestic OW?

Haha, there were definitely a few of those that went wild for Spectre. Definition of a 3 star Bond movie.I largely loved Craig's era but I've tried to watch Spectre three separate times and fell asleep at the hour mark each time. I think it's not meant to be for me to see that one haha

From Mick LaSalle, who I genuinely think is the worst Top Critic in all of Rotten Tomatoes. Gave The Batman and Avatar 2 a 25/100, gave Morbius a 75/100. He's a classic contrarian in many cases. On a personal level, I never agree with him. But Avatar 2 is still dipping into the 60s on MC, it's inevitable.

A2 WEEKEND THREAD | 134.1M DOM OW | Thurs 17m / Fri 36m / Sat 45m / Sun 36m
in Numbers and Data

Wakanda Forever underperformed because it's likely very few people went to see it more than once, as a rather emotionally heavy and long film. I actually had to pay to see it twice in IMAX w/ Regal Unlimited because I fell asleep an hour into it the first time. Let's see if Avatar 2 succeeds or fails in conjuring up repeat business/strong legs.
