You're really seeing most critics saying the story is mediocre? I'm not seeing that at all. Praise for the story and characters vastly outnumbers the criticism.
If that was the case, the movie would easily have an 8/10 average rating or higher. Not everyone likes the story, and that's okay.

I'm seeing back up to 85% with 117 reviews but the site still hasn't stabilized haha

RT Top Critics:
Avatar: 79% with 7.1/10 avgThe Batman: 76% with 7.3/10 avg
BPWF: 73% with 7/10 avg
Obviously TGM is just in another stratosphere
Wakanda Forever even being that high with Top Critics is hilarious imo. 20 minutes of a soulful Boseman tribute trapped in 2h20 extra mins of universe filler and dull action.

I would wait until the server stabilizes to see where it actually lands. If it's 80 or lower, then yeah, this is definitely lower than pretty much all of us were expecting. Really weird to see some reviews like "Never bet against Cameron" or "blockbuster filmmaking and storytelling at its finest" and then it gets a 7 or 8/10 lol

So the review embargo on this ever gonna drop or nah?
This is a very standard review embargo for huge movies lol

The point Joshua Axelrod made in his first tweet about nothing feeling tactile, like it's all a video game cut scene, is exactly how I felt after watching the 2nd trailer. Obviously this takes place on an alien world with non human characters but I feel like you still need some real live action stuff to ground it a bit, or suspend your disbelief.
This is just an opinion though and not a critique.
To be fair, wasn't he talking exclusively about HFR, and instead said the VFX and 3D are phenomenal? Not every showtime will be in HFR.
Sadly, the amount of open theaters in China actually decreased by nearly 200 in the past day. I'm "bracing" for like a $2.1-2.3b run, which would of course still be amazing.

I can easily see low 80s RT and a high 60s MC.

any new reviews pouring out after the premiere?
The next wave of critics are watching it right now

Have any of these comic-book bloggers given a negative reaction? Everyone I´ve seen have been pretty positive
We'll know tomorrow for sure when critic reviews drop at noon EST, but so far, it feels to me like the most tempered reactions have come from CBM bloggers and YouTubers. Not outright pans, mind you, and not making a full generalization, I've just seen critics be more effusive in their praise (with a few derisions from Guardian and Telegraph)

I'm revising my MC prediction from 76 to 73, and RT stays flat at 85%. I feel like the comic-book bloggers and a handful of top critics are going to drag it down to Dune range (which is still great, and clearly not impacting its awards prospects).

RT/MC predictions boys
85/73
Dune has a 75 MC with people citing pacing issues and a lack of emotional connection. Some will agree that the pacing in Avatar 2 is similarly uneven, but many more are citing how emotional and rousing its 3rd act is. I'll say 76 MC and agree with you at 85% RT.

It's funny how adjusted expectations can lead to disappointment. I remember saying several weeks ago that anything between $140-150m OW with typical Cameron backloaded-ness would be great - and it still would be! But I was letting my head float in the clouds a bit with a $170-180m expectation this past week. I'm seeing anywhere from $150-160m now, probably on the lower end of that bound.
-
$18m still looking like the previews target, yeah? I don't expect that to budge much in these last few days - if anything it could point to $17-18m. However, do we expect any sort of meaningful review bump for OW as a whole?

Seems like the GG might've nominated it sight unseen, because I would've expected The Weeknd to sneak into Original Song. OG Avatar got 4 GG nominations, but this one missed on Song & Score.
Everything to do with the GG is a corrupt farce and a joke, though, so best not to read into it too much.
Weeknd's song and the score haven't been getting nominated anywhere, so I'd write those off. They definitely didn't nominate it sight unseen - it also got into the top 10 at AFI, NBR, NYFCO, and NYFCC.

Getting the GG nom and being on all of these top 10 lists bodes well. Critics RT seems likely to be 90+ at this point (at least through OD which is all that really matters until WOM comes into play.)
It's undoubtedly a great sign, but I wouldn't go as far as 90% RT, necessarily. The Globes, prestigious as they are, are prone to interesting takes that don't always gel with critics. Elvis being in Director and Picture, for example, despite having like a 60 on MC and 77% on Rotten Tomatoes. I'm still expecting mid-80s, but we'll see!
Agreed that the NYFCC, New York Film Critics Online, AFI, and NBR really do bode well, though.

IF enough people have seen it I dont think it should have much trouble getting the noms it wants (director+drama), but that might be a big if
This is my thought process. It's such a late-breaking movie, and I know on 12/7 (the day before Golden Globes voting closed), one of the new international members said they hadn't yet received a screener for it, so that could be a problem. The top 6 contenders for Drama and 8 contenders for Director, respectively, are:
BEST MOTION PICTURE - DRAMA
Avatar: The Way of Water
Elvis
Everything Everywhere All At Once
Tar
Top Gun: Maverick
Women Talking
BEST DIRECTOR
James Cameron, Avatar: The Way of Water
Damien Chazelle, Babylon
The Daniels, Everything Everywhere All At Once
Todd Field, Tar
Baz Luhrmann, Elvis
Martin McDonagh, The Banshees of Inisherin
Sarah Polley, Women Talking
Steven Spielberg, The Fabelmans
With fierce competition, if Avatar: The Way of Water manages to break into either or both of these categories, it's a VERY good sign. Nominations are announced tomorrow at 8:35am EST.

A top 10 movie of the year for American critics is a very good sign for the review embargo
Avatar: The Way of Water has now cracked the top 10 at the New York Film Critics Online circle, AFI, and National Board of Review (NBR). It won Production Design today at the LA Film Critics Circle (we'll have their full top 10 later today), and was runner-up for Cinematography at the New York Film Critics Online to Nope. Good day for it so far. Let's see how LA Film Critics and the Boston Society of Film Critics shake out with their top 10.

How are we feeling for Golden Globe nominations tomorrow? Drama, where Avatar is campaigning, has Women Talking, The Fabelmans, Elvis, and more to contend with.

For a point of reference to @Dragoncaine post, F9 opened to $136M and finished around $218M.
Thanks for this. Obviously data is either stabilizing or trending upward or downward every day, so at this moment, what are your predix for China OW and overall?

Another 2/10 besides Robbie Collins from The Telegraph??? That one is already counted on MC and RT.
