  1. The first movie was a pretty amazing theater experience, but to me it was just another great movie, my "disney-will-cancel-the-mcu-in-shame"-tier expectations (which seems like they werent met) came from other factors that didnt really have to do much with the first movie; 13 years, cameron interviews, the /tv/ guy, the sheer magnitude of the whole undertaking, the box office potential of avatar but better, how personal it all promised to me, etc Heres why I began dooming as soon as I saw the first reactions; for a lot of people, not including me, but including my dad (probably his favorite movie) and some high profile critics, avatar 1 was more than just a great movie, it was something really special, in a way personal, and from none of the reactions, even the ones that rave the most, do I get the impression that 2 makes them feel the same It'll get its BP nom, it'll get its 2 billion, it'll get its fan fiction, but it wont be the new star wars and it (probanly) wont get 3 billion Of course its possible that fanboys wars have poisoned the well, and that general audiences adores it, but so far it seem James Cameron could have failed, failed both my expectations and the ones he set for himself (mostly through interviews) shame because I saw glimmers of hope in the 2nd released trailer ("the way of water connects all things" one) I will of course begin the avatar 3 shilling campaign shortly (blame Zoe Zaldaña for that) disclaimer: I am under the assumption that reactions and their relationship with both the final critical consensus and the opinion of audiences will be similar that of other movies thats the most damming review to me
  2. lets get the avatar 3 hype train rolling then here I come with my 3 billion prediction
  3. yeah pretty confident that this will get great reviews, a great box office run and will get a BP nom, but the all-timer movie I dreamed of might not be there
  4. ok im dooming a bit less now lets up my projected MC score from 72 and 77 still dissapointed though seems weirdly divisive
  5. cant believe a couple of tweets was only it took to wipe a billion of my prediction (I was a 3+ billion predictor) still had a lot of fun of here, so im not going anywhere
  6. general image seems to be thats its not as impressive as the first one war, meaning that even if it has a tighter writing none of it might matter if the wow factor isnt as big as in 09
  7. seems like some folks are still complaining about HFR, wonder if that had an meaningful effect in their enjoyment of the movie gonna wait at least a week after release so that I can an opinion from people whove seen it in both formats
  8. Didnt quite follow social media reactions to TG:M too closely, but Maverick's were better than this right?
  9. https://www.metacritic.com/movie/avatar/critic-reviews read the reviews which give it a 100, this clearly isnt better than avatar 1 was in 09 lots of praise thrown around, but not seeing much "changing cinema forever" this time around
  10. just having fun, being slightly dissapointed can also be fun in some ways dooming to me is a meaningless buzzword I use everytime my team is losing
  11. im dooming the first one's best reviews sounded much more enthusiastic than this lowering my prediction to 2.2
  12. avatar sure isnt sounding win-competitive edit: that was a very weird roll out, still dont think it sounds win competitive but id be fine with having it as the #1 dark horse
