  1. You know that makes sense. It's been a long while since they've done a character-driven movie (if we even consider the first Despicable Me like one).
  2. Trust me, it looks very beautiful. There's a very pleasant art direction going on.
  3. Saw Migration. It's good but not great. Definitely a better effort than usual from Illumination (actually well-structured main theme/main character arc). I think there's no licensed stuff bare maybe the penultimate scene (none in the credits too). They also don't split up the cast for the vast majority of the movie which makes it easier to keep/shift focus organically. I definitely think it's going to be their best reviewed movie since the first Despicable Me, and probably Certified Fresh at the very least, which hasn't happened in over a decade at this point.
  4. how are the last numbers for Mario? Seems The Numbers had two different figures going around both close to 1.35B, one over, one under. I assume it's going to pass Black Panther within a few days and enter top 15 highest-grossing movies of all time if it hasn't already.
  5. with what we have like data for now, any chance the movie manages to land around 770m? I'm counting on a good enough growth for Beyond to reach 1B since part two of two-parters tend to have a significantly better gross (Harry Potter, Avengers to cite a few). would be interesting to behold SPA having their first 1B hit.
  6. I've seen people predicting Mario's final range to be 1.3-1.35B but I wonder if there's any scenario in which Frozen 2 is going down.
  7. Why the heck are people so negative about this? Say you've wanted a faithful and cinematic film adaptation of a piece of media you've enjoyed as a child but you never ever got it. Instead you've got a movie that got almost nothing to do with the world you so cherished. Wouldn't you be happy if that adaptation finally comes decades later? Can't people just enjoy things?
  8. The brothers being from New York has been a thing in the beginning. It was later retconned, Mario was an isekai before isekais were common XD. It's not a thing that comes from the live action movie or the super show, it goes back way further to one of the original games.
  9. as far as I know, that only happened with Detective Pikachu. Mario is the most iconic videogame character of them all. If a Pokemon live action movie focused on a spinoff game with Pikachu as the lead can make around 434M dollars, Mario should easily destroy the 800M barrier. 1 billion is difficult in those times (not a single animated movie post-pandemic got there) tho so who knows if it goes that high
  10. Sonic 2 was underestimated even on the high end compared to the actuals 8 days before. It overperformed by 20% the high end of the 3-day forecast. If Mario does that, it would end up at 126M, which is like 4 million behind Frozen 2. It would be top 5 domestic 3-day of all-time for animated movies in the US. That's crazy.
  11. Trailers for animated movies aren't necessarily representative of the tone. They are often extremely calculated to catch the target demographic. Even some of the marketing for the Last Wish had its own part of cringe if you ask me. Sometimes you need to see the full package to actually be able to judge the product. Or reviews. Obviously, Mario will not be an Oscar-worthy movie, but I hope it lands in the 80s and is above the average Illumination stuff and that Nintendo, while making these movies, intends to continue to make sure to improve them or make them better and in more innovative ways, just like they do with games.
  12. how many needle drops are in this? The trailers have been surprisingly empty of those but I've read apparently I need a Hero is in this as well as Take on Me and the Bowser song and the Super Show theme song
  13. Illumination's highest rated movie is Despicable Me at 80%. If Mario somehow clears that bar, then it would be pretty cool honestly. It's time for the first certified fresh videogame movie adaptation. It's only right that Mario, who's always been a bit of an avant-gardiste videogame franchise, to take the lead on this.
  14. if this movie is indeed middling it kind of feels like a shame given how good it looks and feels. The action scenes and art direction are easily the best Illumination has ever put out and I'm looking forward to GIF-ing this thing to death. I hope the movie has a good emotional core and actual arcs for the characters.
