Newcomer to this thread: “I’m not really enjoying the humor in the hew trailer. Not sure if all audiences will appreciate it.” Barbie army: “What, how can you possibly say such a thing? The humor is obviously designed with exquisite campiness, cutting across all generational, class and ethnic divides, bridging gaps that were once thought impenetrable. It’s an absolute winner. Please rethink your taste. The problem with men like you is that you only watch MCU /DC and you underestimate the power of women and gays. Not everything has to be appeal to you. This movie will prove you wrong. The writing is on the wall - Barbillion forever.”

If SOME movies sit on poor critical reception for weeks at a time then people won’t go to see the movie in the first place. By the time WOM starts to turn things around it’s too late. Anyway like I said it doesn’t apply to Barbie at this stage… Jesus I feel like everything has to turn into an argument in this thread.

I don’t really get the idea that the Dunkirk evacuation is of more resonance to international audiences (minus the UK) than the invention of the atomic bomb and its aftermath? What might help WOM is that most audiences have little clue what the movie will be fully about. Most probably think it’s just the Manhattan Project, when it’s also about the FBI illegally colluding to end Oppenheimer’s role in government, the influence of McCarthyism, etc. I mean, Biden literally reversed the 1954 security clearing decision against Oppenheimer last year. Any kind of political / cultural discourse about the movie will be a bonus.

It’s funny how people are asking that no more clips of Barbie are shared because they’ve seen enough, but the opposite for Oppenheimer, that we need to something other than the same rearrangement of tv clips. I don’t know how I feel about it. They probably feel they’re guaranteed a solid opening without having to share anything else.

Someone mentioned how rare it was to have the kind of global press tour they’re doing now with the cast and director eg. as was done for Avatar. Obviously they sensed the opportunity a while back. Other costs won’t be as high as people expect. Doing things like the press junket at a pool, doing the Malibu Barbie beach house, etc - those things are cheap ways to get earned media. All the Barbie product collabs and tie-ins also are frequently very cheap because they are promotional for both sides.

This seems to be the schedule so far: July 7-8: New York press junket with the cast July 11: Paris Premiere July 13: London Premiere I read somewhere that LA premiere will be around 18th but can’t remember where I saw that. Obviously a chance of the London and LA ones not going ahead which isn’t good.
