  1. Ha, sure. But you can’t speak so confidently of ‘scores being rotten’ and ‘no nomination for Murphy’ if you’ve diverged so obviously from critical consensus before.
  2. So he’s shown the movie by a higher up at Universal (his insinuation) and decides to post about it at Reddit? Scroll through his post history shows he hated EEAAO. Not sure he’s in a position to judge the critical reception of Oppenheimer. Also sceptical of the way he dismisses Cillian’s performance as basically average.
  3. I could be wrong but it looks like tracking is already showing a jump in Oppenheimer sales now that Barbie tickets have been released. Either way, it’s a huge amount of free marketing.
  4. I really think the timing of Barbie releasing on the same day is of great benefit to Oppenheimer, bringing in younger audiences or those who may not have otherwise seen it, for the sake of the ‘double feature’.
  5. Seeing Barbie (and/or seeing it as a double feature with Oppenheimer), had become a bit of an ‘event’ for some people, meaning advance planning and coordination are needed. Especially if you’re grabbing these tickets. I don’t think it’s comparable with Mission Impossible and its typical demographic, but doesn’t mean MI won’t do well.
  6. Nolan is painfully sincere, which also makes his movies very memeable. When most things are laced with irony because it’s the easy way out, I kind of respect it tbh.
  7. They’re not messing around with the marketing - clearly wanting to make this a cultural hit before it even becomes a theatrical one. There’s a huge amount of expectation heaped onto this movie. I hope it delivers.
  8. The main issue with Barbie is that people seem to be expecting a purely light, fun family movie, when it’s actually written by Gerwig and Baumbach and contains serious political, feminist and adult themes. We know this from test screenings. We know Margot Robbie’s reaction when she first read the script was that this movie would never get made. It will be contentious. Some people will love it but imo it has the potential to be divisive, and that will limit its ceiling.
  9. The was shared at Nolan Fans forum - from Kai Bird, co-author of American Promotheus: I have seen the film last week and I'm not allowed to give the plot away, but if you've read the book you'll recognise the film and I am at the moment sort of stunned and emotionally recovering from having seen it. It is I think going to be a stunning sort of artistic achievement and I have hopes that it will actually stimulate a national even global conversation about the issues that Oppenheimer was desperate to speak out about. @20.30
  10. It’s giving sleeper hit vibes for sure. There must be a reason a whole bunch of actors took significant “pay cuts” to work on this project.
  11. Actually I think a lot of audiences have had enough of meta/self-aware movies and ‘politically and socially accurate’ narratives (according to interview this week with Ncuti Gatwa). Some people just wanted a fun Barbie movie. I think it will get rave reviews from some quarters but will be divisive elsewhere.
  12. The MPA is so prudish and vague in the reasons it gives for its ratings. Meanwhile the BBFC is like ‘Strong language, one use of ‘f*ck’, and other terms including ‘shit’, ‘dick, ‘asshole’ and ‘hell’.”* *Not Barbie-related - that hadn’t been rated yet.
  13. They were trialling two cuts in April, a PG and PG-13. Feedback was saying that the PG one was cutting out too much to be coherent.
  14. Latest Quorum survey out - awareness of Oppenheimer continuing to rise very quickly. https://thequorum.com/film/?filmID=300 I still think they need to do more highlight the stacked cast - a lot of people still have no idea who’s in this movie.
  15. It will be interesting to see if there’s an uptick in Oppenheimer ticket sales, ie people planning the ‘double feature’ viewing.
  16. I’m keeping an eye out for what the R rating will translate to in other markets like the UK and Australia, since it’s actually such a broad category. The likes of Wolf of Wall Street and Babylon were given an 18 rating, but this I expect to be given a 15, which wouldn’t particularly harm the film’s prospects. Any sexually explicit scenes will likely just get censored before release in countries like India, where I expect this movie to do very well.
  17. Yes let’s see. It’s unchartered territory. Also, any crossover with Barbie will be from this demographic.
  18. I don’t doubt it, but some people seem to forget that Cillian has fronted one of the most watched and iconic TV shows in the UK and globally for a decade, and is hugely popular here. Check any trailer for Oppenheimer and a lot of the comments are about him. No he’s not anywhere near Leo, but not an insignificant casting.
  19. Some young women are absolutely buying tickets early because they’re obsessed with Cillian Murphy aka Tommy Shelby. It’s all over Twitter and TikTok. I’m not saying it’s the bulk of purchases but it’s a factor. It’ll be curious to see the gender breakdown for this movie’s audience.
