I think it is clear multiverse live action films, NWH aside, have been very confusing.

Keep it simple, cast Josh Hartnett as Dr. Doom, and go back to the roots.

I just don’t think it’s very appealing and the stakes actually feel lower.  NWH home was huge because of nostalgia.  If there had been 2 other variants also played by Tom Holland that movie probably makes less than half of what it actually did.

  2. The biggest issue was following up Thanos with the multiverse arc.  It’s incredibly hard to follow for a lot of people, the stakes just aren’t there with different variants of characters and there just hasn’t been any build up to connect the movies.  And I think it has also contributed to quality issues as simpler story telling is often frankly better and easier to execute.

Having just gotten back from this, I don’t know how anyone could consider this a “deconstructionist” story. There’s nothing about it that feels like it’s trying to deconstruct the character or the franchise.  It does in fact play it fairly safe, apart from the unnecessarily long runtime.

Yep.  Same character and style of franchise this has always been. Other than Ford just being older nothing about Indiana Jones or the action scenes felt out of place from the early movies.

Where are you guys reading or hearing that death threats are being uttered? I just want to make sure that I am correct in saying that the original of The Little mermaid was animation wasn't it? Are there seriously people in this world that are getting upset did a black actress has replaced a white animated character? And I'm not trying to be facetious or sensational at all in this question I'm actually being sincere. Where are these death threats coming from?

The alt right are the worst people in the world and have been impossible to miss since 2016.  And sadly are basically main stream on the right in America at this point.

if Mangold couldn't save Indiana Jones movie, the legit awful Ms Marvel director is not going to save Rey Palpatine movie. I have no clue why that choice. Not surprised that Lindelof was bummed. I usually trash Lindelof for mystery box crap but I'm with him in this.

Yep, I don’t think Kennedy has any real vision.  Throwing stuff at the wall and hoping it sticks

I actually like the character of Rey and want another Rey movie where she does what she SHOULD have done for the Rise of Skywalker plot: become a true "sky walker" and create the new Jedi Order. Being unbound to the whole "has to include the original heroes" thing would open up new plot possibilities. Sadly Indy doesn't have an "out" like this, especially since most don't want The Adventures of Mutt to be a thing.

I have no problem with her character and would be fine seeing her again in a story that is well done.  I haha zero confidence in Kennedy as a producer at this point or that she can help usher a good Star Wars movie to completion.

Disney needs to fire their test audiences

They need to fire Kathleen Kennedy.  And my opinion on that has nothing to do with the far right’s bullshit takes about Rey being a Mary sue or wokeness nonsense (which is all a bunch of garbage spewed by bad people) but from the fact she has mismanaged the Star Wars films pretty horribly with constant announced and canceled projects and very divisive last couple of movies and then seemingly missing the landing on Indiana Jones on a movie they were incredibly confident in.

I keep forgetting that the Willow show was actually a thing that happened. Ditto the also cancelled National Treasure series.

    Meanwhile:

...is anyone really surprised this is shutting down 18 months after opening? It was a cool idea on paper, but asking folks that pay that amount of money for a two-night stay where you couldn't see outside the hotel room (or have a pool to go to) was bound to not last very long, especially when so many folks were still financially struggling from the pandemic, unless Disney had intended this to be a resort only for the rich and famous who could afford it (which I doubt they did). Even the most dedicated Star Wars stans seemed to respond to this with "love does have limits."

Chapek was an absolute moron.  It’s amazing that people with zero talent can rise to those heights.

Normally great, no studios send big movies to premiere at Cannes this early without expect great reception

I’ve seen movies out of competition getting even better reviews than the ones competing (see Mad Max Fury Road)

The 3 movies Pixar send was top tier (Up / Inside Out / Soul which didn’t screened because of covid)

LucasFilm was expecting great things for sure, there’s no way to spin this, it simply backfire on their faces which is not common

Yep, they were clearly expecting this to get great reviews. But they also seem to be totally out of touch on the movie side of things.

hard to say  TLJ got an A and we have definitive proof that film was not as well received as a A cinemascore.

(or else this would beating TLJ in the opening or matching it)

Yeah, that was meaningless for TLJ.  From all accounts I’ve seen (people I know, RT, various message boards) the consensus I’ve seen is that people are enjoying it and are satisfied with the conclusion.

To be honest that "record" (less than both TFA and TLJ) doesn't mean anything, Star Wars is very frontloaded franchise, maybe the most frontloaded, let's see its holds over the next few days.

That really isn't true at all.  It may be frontloaded over its opening weekends but the movies tend to have good legs overall for big blockbusters.

They should let it rest for 10+ years and develop a new story that has nothing to do with the original movies.

I mean with the way society moves on from things these days even 3 years with no Star Wars movies might be fine but they need a new and compelling story not tied at all to the main saga or its characters in my opinion.

Rise of Skywalker Thursday and Friday (as of noon ET):

    Thursday:

    Theaters: 280 (+2)

    Showings: 2734 (+35)

    Sold Out Showings: 57 (+3)

Tickets Sold: 120654 (+11452 since last night) (63% of Avengers: Endgame day 1 (est))

    Tickets Available: 395025 (+6206)

    Estimated ATP: 13.18 (+0.01)

    Estimated Sales: 1589599 (+151187)

Estimated Nationwide Sales: 11.9 million (+1.1 million)

    Friday:

    Theaters: 281

    Showings: 4304

    Sold Out Showings: 37

Tickets Sold: 67266 (making some eyeball estimates, probably about 35-40% of Endgame)

    Tickets Available: 667625

    Estimated ATP: 12.34

    Estimated Total Sales: 819482

    Estimated Nationwide Sales: 6.1 million

From this, total nationwide sales might be in the 24-25 million range.

Edit: upped my multipliers based on the ones for Joker

The 63% is to Endgame's total Day 1 total right?  If so that seems pretty good with about 8 hours left (from noon est) for TROS's opening day sales.

Those OUATIH estimates seem off. The movie would need a huge Friday increase to even come close to the high end of the range.

Im gonna say 19.5 mil for now.

Deadline’s holdover numbers are generally pretty worthless unless they give a Friday number.  They are awful with early extrapolations.

    8:00 - 16/121 - 3D

    9:00 - 30/301 - UltraScreen

    11:00 - 0/121 - 3D

    12:00 - 2/301 - UltraScreen

    683% of Aladdin ($625.25M OW)

631% of Pokémon Detective Pikachu ($343.77M OW)

    273% of Toy Story 4 ($330.46M OW)

    208% of Incredibles 2 ($375.74M OW)

    186% of Spider-Man: Homecoming ($218.04M OW)

I am going to be real with y’all, I just can’t see this with an OW under $200M OW at this point.

If the social media reactions and reviews this week are glowing it really feels like this is going to explode (and I doubt Disney would be dropping the embargo this week if they weren't incredibly confident).
