  1. You're definitely right about John Carter, but I think there was some real optimism for Battleship considering its summer release date and Transformers-like premise. Actually STiD seems to be following in Battleship's footsteps. Both released two weeks after the huge marvel movie of the summer.
  2. If Gatsby holds 50% or under that's a victory. IM3's just a behemoth at this point. Edit: Quoted the wrong quote. Oh well.
  3. Hugo and Pina also used 3D great but you can still count the number of films that use 3D well on one hand.
  4. I don't think this indicates anything for Pacific Rim. A huge success for Pacific Rim is probably predicted more on audiences rejecting World War Z, White House Down, and The Lone Ranger more than anything else. And that's impossible to predict this far out.
  5. It's mostly bullshit. The arrows in the beginning look good in 3D, the debris field they fly through looks okay, and the trail of blue stuff that's left behind after they warp looks good too. Other than that no. In fact there was a noticeable amount of blurry objects in the foreground of some shots.
  6. That would be terrible. The 4 week action bloodbath between World War Z, White House Down, The Lone Ranger, and Pacific Rim is going to be bad enough to watch anyways.
  7. I'm not hating on 3D, I think it works for some movies (Life of Pi, Hugo, Avatar) but I think for most movies domestically people go out of their way to not see it in 3D. If it sells overseas that's great and they can keep it if they want it, but I've never sat in nearly empty 350/400-seat theater for newly released blockbuster before. It was really strange.
  8. Yeah, if Cumberbatch was going to be the centerpiece of the marketing they should've been up front about him being Khan. It wasn't even a great reveal, the character's completely different from Montalban's version.
  9. STiD needs one hell of a saturday bump. Better than I expected for IM3 and Gatsby. Also, can 3D just end already? I just saw STiD tonight in 3D, there were eight people in the theater. The 2D shows before and after had sold out.
  10. I'd honestly like to see what Anthony and Joe Russo bring to Captain America 2. I just hope Kevin Feige doesn't interfere too much.
  11. I guess it comes down to the families, but this was marketed as a dark Star Trek movie (Star Trek: The Dark Knight if you will). It's even called Star Trek Into Darkness. Iron Man 3 had a much more colorful and adventurous marketing campaign. StiD ads felt like you were going to see a revenge movie. Not that that's a bad thing, it's just with Epic opening next week I don't know if the families are going to show up this weekend. I still think that we need Friday numbers before a real meltdown though.
  12. FF6 and Epic are still 5/24, only TH3 moved up a day
  13. This is partly but I wouldn't say this is specific to just Avengers movies, this happens with most big movies. I could make the case that The Dark Knight Rises probably killed demand for Total Recall and the Bourne Legacy last year. Without friday numbers it's premature to say this is a bomb, but if it is it could be just as much the fault of TH3 and FF 6 next weekend as it is IM3's fault two weekends ago.
  14. I like Cumberbatch a lot, but I think it was a mistake to highlight him so much in the marketing since he's an unknown in the US.
  15. I'd like to buy 10% of Epic and 50% of The Purge.
  16. Is there a reason that Paramount moved up the release date a week before it came out? Did they suddenly realize that TH3 and FF6 were probably opening big the weekend after, get scared and move the release date up a day to grab a little extra money? At least when Sony moved up TASM to Tuesday to put as much distance between it and TDKR they gave a lot of notice.
