  1. I don’t think Avatar 2 will have a huge opening. Pre-sales at popular sites like BFI, CW/Odeon Leicester Square etc are very strong, but at standard cinemas they are nothing special which is understandable.

Avatar opened to £8.5m, so I am thinking max £12m, although maybe nearer £10m as most will want to watch this in PLF/IMAX for which there is obviously limited capacity. It’s the legs that are key ofcourse.

Also, it’s the WC final this weekend, and even though England aren’t in it, it will still have a huge audience of 15m+ most likely, and it’s on in the middle of the day at 3pm.

Top 10 Comp (BP vs BP2)

    #US &#Canada 202M/180M -11%

    #UK 24.9M/15M -40%

    #France 7.6M/13.7M +80%

    #Mexico 9.2M-12.8M +39%

    #Korea 25.3M/8.8M -65%

    #Brazil 9.5M/7.1M -34%

    #Australia 8.3M/6.8M -18%

    #India 3.9M/6.4M +64%

    #Indonesia 6.2M/6.1M -2%

    #Germany 5.9M/6.1M +3%

For UK, BP had a 6 day opening compared to 3 for BP2 so not comparable at all. Also ER is worse now than 2018, like most countries.  On a like for like basis, this opening is probably about 10-20% below what BP would have made with a 3 day opening, on par with US/Canada/Australia.

  3. Good OD, I do expect it’ll have a better Saturday increase than Batman as that was rated 15 so family bump would have been limited. Maybe £5m Sat. £13m opening seems likely.

I think it is very clear though that this is performing much better in some places than others, especially areas with large black populations which is why this is overindexing in London. Not surprising obviously. In Vue Stratford this must be almost on part with NWH, in other cinemas it would be no where near.

My head nearly exploded the other day when I saw that Cineworld Leicester Square was charging £27 for IMAX 3D tickets, that’s £9 more than up here in Sheffield (where the seats are far more comfortable).

The £9 premium is just because it’s in Leicester Square, where anything you buy is practically daylight robbery. It’s the same if you go to a cinema in Times Square.

Was just having a look at that, that 4 tier pricing system is a mess 🤣

It is, however I don’t know how some chains like Odeon are still in business as Vue have become ultra competitive on price, and also their quality from my experience is better than chains like Odeon. It’s no wonder I rarely see sell-outs anymore in any Odeon cinemas when people can go elsewhere. Even looking at Cineworld, they seem to charge exceptional prices. Would be interesting to see market breakdown of the main chains in the UK.

  6. Expectations for BP2?

Pre-sales looking very strong around me but in London especially this will obviously do huge numbers, so maybe that is skewing expectations.

Difficult to compare to BP as that had a 6 day opening in February 2018. £17.7m 6 day, £10.5m Fri-Sun with a £2.7m OD.

I expect OD will be near £5m mark and perhaps  around £14-15m 3 day.

Do you have any idea of how many admissions TGM has made in the Uk until now?
    Thanks in advance!!

Unfortunately not, there is no public source of information for admissions data in the UK. It sucks. There might be someone else in thread that knows, like Phillip or Alfred perhaps.

  8. Strange how TG is being reported as almost $100m, but due to falling ERs it’s actually been falling from a high of $96.4m to now $94.7m reported on BOM, despite seeing increases at the box office in the last two weeks.

The pound is reaching new lows every week and it  is at its lowest point since 1985 (excluding the couple of days around the first March 2020 lockdown), at just £1/$1.16, down from almost $1.4 a year ago. With the economic outlook, I don’t think it’ll be recovering any time soon and I wouldn’t be surprised if it got close to parity. Sad, as it’s almost impossible for a film to reach $100m now, and even $50m would be difficult whereas previously it was a fairly standard target.

Shows how huge of an impact ERs actually have on the international box office, especially in a time when most currencies are depreciating relative to the dollar.

So does the heat ever reach a point where the idea of being in a movie theatre just sounds better than being outside or at home (presuming no A/C there)?

Today and yesterday it definitely did.

Roads and transport were noticeably less busy as everyone was staying inside trying to escape the heat as best as possible (even though it’s almost just as unbearable indoors without air con). But you can’t sit outside in a park or pub garden for hours in 40 degrees, so I’d say cinemas probably haven’t suffered as badly in this heatwave.

But this is exceptional, for normal hot periods here (ie 30 degrees), the weather is much more useable for outdoor activities. Also, we have had quite a lot of hot weather this summer and I think as the summer goes on the impact on BO gets less.

Argh this humidity can suck so many bags of dicks

Looks like the all time temperature record is in danger of falling early next week. Temps look set to reach high 30s Monday and Tuesday, potentially even the 40 mark I’ve heard floating around, which is just unprecedented for the UK.
