The Panda
I'll start posting these every couple of days for different movies, just fill out what wins each category, each movie gets a point per category and 5 for best overall.Note: Most emotionally engaging includes humor, fear, etc. Just because it doesn't make you cry doesn't mean it's not emotionally engaging, a movie that makes you hurt from laughing is also emotionally engaging, or if it effects your breathing out of fear or suspense. Also Most Rewatchable can also correlate to most entertaining.Best Directing:Best Single Performance:Best Acting Ensemble:Best Screenplay:Best Premise:Best Cinematography:Best Editing:Best Visual Effects:Best Soundtrack:Best Ending:Most Ambitious:Most Emotionally Engaging:Most Thematically Significant:Most Rewatchable:Best Overall:My ExampleBest Directing: Gravity Best Single Performance: Chiwetel Ejiofer, 12YASBest Acting Ensemble: 12YASBest Screenplay: 12YASBest Premise: GravityBest Cinematography: GravityBest Editing: GravityBest Visual Effects: GravityBest Soundtrack: GravityBest Ending: 12YASMost Ambitious: 12YASMost Emotionally Engaging: 12YASMost Thematically Significant: 12YASMost Rewatchable: GravityBest Overall: 12YASAnd 12YAS would get 12 points, Gravity 7 Edited November 26, 2013 by The Panda
Webslinger
Both are great movies, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if they finish the year as my top two. I'll take Gravity over 12 Years a Slave. The latter is a blisteringly powerful movie that sets a new gold standard for its subject matter (at least as far as theatrical films are concerned), but Gravity was still the more arresting, involving, and exhilarating experience for me. Or at least that's what I think right now; this duo could very easily be the next There Will Be Blood/No Country for Old Men pair whose "best of the year" status I constantly flip-flop.
