Top 25 animations post 2000 RESULTS- 2. TOY STORY 3

Recommended Posts

because it was way better than KFP and the best animated movie of 201, such a great animation. I think KFP2 was in my top 10.

KFP was ok, but I hated KFP2. They didn't bring anything new and the plot was just stupid. A new bad guy appeared and then talking animals started doing the same thing they did on the last movie.

And the end was like
"oh po nice fight, your skills so good, such inner peace, china is thankful"

the comedy

the emotion

the climax

the voice cast

the action and cinematography (the best for an animation)

the score (you can't get any better this)

everything was amazing to perfect in KFP2

16. LILO AND STITCH- 134 points [10 votes]

Finally a film on this list that has appeared on more lists than the previous record holder the Simpsons Movie, the 2002 Disney animation was a big hit with audiences and critics [86% on RT]. For an animation to succeed, you need the loveable cute character and we had that in Stitch. It was Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois first film as directors who went on to direct another film on this list later. The teaser trailers were parodies of other Disney films [which you can see underneath] and comics were also made. It received two straight to DVD sequels and missed the number 1 spot in America by 500k.

Box Office: 35.2/145.7/127.3/273.1. A big hit at the box office which had a quite a low budget.

Nominated for 30 awards including 9 wins for top box office films, voice acting, animated film and director. It was nominated for best animated film at the Oscars.

15. SHREK 2- 151 points [11 votes]

Everyone's favourite Ogre returned to the big screen 3 years later in 2004 with all the lovable sidekicks such as Donkey and Fiona all coming back. It was universally loved by audiences [apart from me] and critics [89% on RT, higher than the first film]. It was the third biggest selling film domestically ever at the time of release [it's 8th now] and today is the 26th biggest selling film worldwide. It is the 4th biggest animation of all time worldwide only behind Toy Story 3 and the re-releases of finding nemo and the lion king pushing them above it with DM2 just under. It was selected for competition by the Cannes festival. It was the biggest film of the franchise.

Box Office: 108/441.2/478.6/919.8. Success explained above

Nominated for 50 awards including 13 wins for BAFTA's kids award, BMI's music award, animation, best voice role, best animation and comedy at the teen choice awards and 5 at the people choice awards for favourite comedy, sequel, animation, Eddie Murphy and Jennifer Saunders. It was nominated for 2 Oscars which were for best original song and best animation and a Golden Globe nomination for best animation

14. PERSEPOLIS- 157 points [8 votes]

The last black and white film aimed at adults on this list, the 2007 animation actually got one of the lowest amount of voters on the top 25 but really high rankings from the people who voted propelled it this high. It was based on the novel of the same name about the Iranian revolution. The film has one of the best reviews on this list with an out of this world 97% on RT and was loved by people who saw the film. Though it caused controversy with the Bangkok film festival dropping it, complaints from the Iranian government and was originally banned in Lebanon. The film won a prize at Cannes [more underneath] and it was ranked #58 in Empire's list of best 100 world cinema films. The film appeared on many of the top 10 lists of major critics. It was France's entry for best foreign film for the Oscars but it did not receive a nomination for this.

Box Office: 88.826/4.4/18.3/22.7. A solid performance domestically for a foreign film but the stand out performance was in France with 9.4m. It did well for a film that has a budget of about 7.3m.

Nominated for 47 awards including 20 wins. Some major awards and nominations were for best animation at the Oscars, best foreign language film at the Golden Globes, best film not in the English language and best animation at the BAFTA'S [nominations]. It's major win was the Jury Prize at the Cannes film festival. It also won awards at loads of festivals.

I believe this trailer is in English

13. FANTASTIC MR FOX- 184 points [7 votes]

Based on Roald Dahl's classic book, this film adaptation was released in 2009 with stunning reviews [93% on RT] and great audience reaction. It had an all star voice cast [George Clooney, Meryl Streep and Bill Murray etc] being directed by a great director [Wes Anderson- this was his first animation and adaptation]. The film was originally being developed by Revolution studios in 2004 with Anderson and Henry Sellick but that company went bust in 2007 and Sellick left the project to direct Coraline [#17]. The film was also a stop-motion film and the highest one placed on this list [but there might be one more but I don't think it is stop-motion]. It had it's premiere at the London film festival.

Box Office: 265,900/6.9m [wide OW]/21/25.4/46.4. The film was disappointing domestically [though it still grossed more than Astro Boy, Ponyo and major hit Battle For Terra] but it was a major hit with over 14m in Dahl's native UK. But the film's production budget was 40m meaning this probably made a loss.

Nominated for 52 awards including 30 wins. It got two nominations at the Oscars for best original score and best animated film, the same categories at the BAFTA's and a nomination for best animated film at the Golden Globes. It won multiple awards for best animation, screenplay, George Clooney and Alexander Desplat for the films score.

KFP was ok, but I hated KFP2. They didn't bring anything new and the plot was just stupid. A new bad guy appeared and then talking animals started doing the same thing they did on the last movie.

Got to disagree there. One of the things I liked so much about KFP2 was that it wasn't just a rehash of the first film's plot. Po hadn't lost any of the competence he gained at the end of the film. The furious five already trusted and accepted him as a friend and, instead of the whole film being about training him, the film was about him finding out about and coming to terms with the loss of his real parents.

If the first film was a physical journey for Po, then the second film was a emotional journey. Completely different.

Also, I much preferred Gary Oldman's peacock as a villain compared to the villain from the first film.

12. WRECK IT RALPH- 205 points [12 votes]

Every film has now passed 200 points on this list and this is the first film in our double whammy of Walt Disney Animation films comeback. Critics liked it [86% on RT] but audiences absolutely loved it with something for everyone in this film. The video game arcade based film also premiered at the El Capitan theatre in late October. It is the 52nd animation from the Walt Disney company classics and included loads of characters from famous video games such as Bowser, Doctor Eggman and Pacman. The working title was Joe Jump and then Reboot Ralph. It was accompanied with Oscar winning short film Paperman with the first trailer for WIR debuting with Madagascar 3 and Rock of Ages and the second trailer going with Finding Nemo 3D and Frankenweenie. Games were produced such as Fix-It-Felix and the film was a major box office success. A sequel is being planned with characters such as Mario and Tron featuring.

Box Office: 49/189.4/281.8/471.2. It was a major hit at the box office with a total just short of film #11 and was way higher than the box office expectations. It grossed over 20m in Australia, Brazil, Japan, North America and the UK [which was the biggest international territory with 36m]

Nominated for 37 awards including 17 wins for best animation, sound editing, voice performances, best box office film and 5 wins at the Annie's. It got nominated for best animated feature at the Oscars [where many thought this or Frankenweenie should have won] and at the Golden Globes.

11. TANGLED- 220 points [13 votes]

And our second film in our Disney rundown films, the 2010 release [before WIR] was the film that started the Walt Disney Animation Studios comeback. It was also the 50th Disney release and had amazing critic reviews [89% on RT] and was loved massively by audiences with the film also appealing to every person of either gender or age. The film based on Rapunzel [which was the original title] and it spent 6 years in production which also gives it a reputation as one of the most expensive films ever with a 260m budget [only behind one of the POTC films I believe]. It had loveable characters in the chameleon, Rapunzel and Flynn Rider. Talking about it's title, it was originally Rapunzel Unbraided, then changed to Rapunzel before being changed to Tangled to appeal to both sexes which was controversial. It broke loads of records at the time such as opening day Thanksgiving, the song I see the light got loads of award attention and a 6 minute short comedy film Tangled Ever After was shown with Beauty and the Beast 3D.

Box Office: 48.7/200.8/390.9/591.7. A major hit when you are not factoring the massive budget, it beat all expectations and was superb domestically and grossed over 20m in overseas territories such as Australia, Brazil, France, Germany [biggest territory with 44.2m], Japan, Russia and the UK with only just being off 20m in Spain. An amazing hit worldwide.

Nominated for 29 awards including 4 wins for top box office films, best song [x2] and best animation. It was nominated for best animated film and best original song at the Golden Globes

It was nominated for best song at the Oscars with I see the light but it was snubbed for best animated feature at the Oscars with their only being 3 nominations that year though it should have gotten a nomination. It is one of few films that were eligible on this list that did not receive a best animation Oscar nomination.

AND FOR OUR ONLY TIE ON THE LIST....

10. SHREK- 246 points [13 votes]

The ogre's second and final appearance on this list comes just behind #9 on number of people who voted, Shrek was loved by critics [88% on RT] but audiences absolutely craved this film and as soon as this was released, we knew we had a new hit animation franchise. It is mainly a parody of other animation fairytale films and is loosely based on the picture fairytale book Shrek. Shrek confirmed DreamWorks status as a challenger to Pixar and it received 3 sequels, 2 tv specials and a film spinoff. The film featured great voice performances from Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz and especially Eddie Murphy as the funny lovable Donkey. Plans for a 3D version of Shrek in December 2001 were dropped for unknown reasons and Burger King and Baskin Robbins advertised the film heavily. The film has a 0.3 increase domestically in it's second weekend. The film was entered into Cannes and was the first animated film to do so since Peter Pan in 1953. It inspired films such as Happily N'Ever After, Igor and Hoodwinked [with the latter earning 26 points and the other two having a massive 0 points]. There was also a musical based on the film.

Box Office: 42.3/267.6/216.7/484.4. A major hit with a fantastic multiplier from it's opening domestically, it was the third biggest film of 2001. It was also a success internationally especially in the UK where it earned over 40m.

Nominated for 77 awards including 31 wins. It's major win was the first ever Best Animated feature award at the Oscars [and the 2nd to appear on this list so far]. It was also nominated for best adapted screenplay as well at the oscars and it got a nomination for best musical/comedy at the Golden Globes. At the BAFTA'S, it won one for best adapted screenplay and got noms for best score, best film, best sound, visual effects and Eddie Murphy. It won 8 at the Annie's and got a nomination for the Palme D'Or at the Cannes film festival.

THE SHREK SERIES POINTS IN THIS COMPETITION

Shrek- 246, Shrek 2- 151, Puss In Boots- 26, Shrek 4- 15, don't think Shrek 3 got any points.

9. HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON- 246 points [15 votes]

Winning the tiebreaker is the 2010 animation and like Shrek, it also had a fantastic multiplier at the box office and was also loosely based on the book series of the same name. There was a battle for 3D screens [which most cinemas only had 1 of at the time] between this, Alice in Wonderland and Clash Of The Titans. It was the 10th biggest grossing movie of 2010 and has possibly the best reviews on this list [98% on RT] and it has had 3 short films, a television series, ice show, an arena show and two upcoming sequels. I don't have much more to say about this film.

Box Office: 43.7/217.5/227.2/494.8. A superb box office run worldwide with fantastic word of mouth boosting the domestic run and it hit over 20m in international territories such as France, Russia, South Korea and the UK.

Nominated for 53 awards including 19 wins. It got nominated for best animated feature and best original score at the Oscars, same categories at the BAFTA's and best animated feature at the Golden Globes [all nominations]. It won 10 Annie awards

7. MONSTERS INC- 290 points [15 votes]

Pixar's 4th film was a major hit back in 2001 and brought us the amazing characters of Mike and Sulley. It's got an amazing 96% rating on RT and was another film on this list loved by families. The film was a major box office hit and Pixar's 4th hit in a row. There was a lawsuit on the idea of this film. Mike's new car was a Pixar short animation and it has featured in other media such as a show at Disney [Monsters Inc's Laugh Floor], a game app [Monsters, Inc, Run] and a comic. It is #218 in IMDB's top 150 list and it had a 3D re-release in 2012 and sequel Monsters University in 2013 that just missed the list with [see the amount of points in two posts down]. Monsters Inc is a loved Pixar film and this is shown by its high placing on this list.

Box Office: 62.5/289.9/272.9/562.8. A major box office hit which is still in the top half of Pixar releases domestically and a big hit overseas as well especially with 74m and 53m cumes from Japan and the UK

Nominated for 46 awards including 15 wins for categories like song and animation. It received 4 nominations at the Oscars winning one for the song If I Didn't Have You and losing in the categories best animated film, original score and sound editing.

8. UP- 259 points [12 votes]

And this is the first film that starts the list that every other film to appear was distributed by Disney in North America [or how about top 8 Pixar animations-1]. It received a near perfect result from critics [98% on RT] and was a major crowd-pleaser for general audiences with the happy fun moments and the sad tear-jerking moments. The 3D animated adventure from Pixar was the first film from the brand to receive an Oscar nomination for best picture and only the 2nd animated picture to be nominated for this accolade after Beauty And The Beast. The story was started to be worked on during 2004 and the characters Doug and Kevin proved very popular [and so did the floating balloon house]. The film became the first animation and 3D film to open the Cannes film festival when it did in 2009. When it was screened at the El Capitan, it was accompanied with live show Ligthen Up and Partly Cloudy was the short film with Up at the cinemas. It also got an A+ cinema score and is the third biggest Pixar film moneywise domestically.

Box Office: 68.1/293/438.3/731.3. A major hit domestically, it was the 2nd biggest Pixar film at the time of opening and overseas was fantastic. Overseas markets that grossed over 25m: Australia, France, Germany, Japan, Spain and the UK [which was it's biggest territory with over 55m]

Nominated for 92 awards including 37 wins.

Awards Won For: Best original score and best animation at the Oscars, BAFTA'S and the Golden Globes, grammy for best score and loads of wins for best picture and best animation

Nominated For: Best picture, best original screenplay and best sound editing at the Oscars, best screenplay and sound at the BAFTA'S.
