A strong Sunday all around.

The Lion King did well too, though its number is barely on par with my cautious prediction of 4 days ago. It has passed Endgame though the same point of the run (25.9 vs 26.1) and has got a 60% higher weekend.

The weekend was up 9.26% from the same weekend last year. 2019's lead on 2018 in now 12.50%.

The weekend wasn't much better than last year's (when we had HT3's 2nd weekend, MI6's OW and stronger holdovers) but the weekdays of the King were so high that it was enough to gain one more percentage point. +20% over 2018 is still in play, and 15%+ very likely.

 

The Lion King didn't live up to the hope of a superb second weekend hold, which some thought it was suggested by the amazing weekdays, but it's no big deal. First, because in Italy a scenario like that is quite common (Wed openers always get better drops on Thursday and often even better IMs). Second, because we're still talking about the highest non-Cameron 2nd weekend ever for a Hollywood production, much higher than Endgame's (though the last Avengers movie did all the greatness in the first week, its 2nd weekend wasn't even in the top 10 of this decade). With weather getting worse and a crazy high PTA, it should survive IT 2 and pass the 5M admissions mark.

 

Angel Has Fallen recovered over the weekend and will see just a minor (-10/20%) drop from London. It even has a chance at outgrossing it.

 

Hobbs & Shaw just needs one more decent weekend to be sure to pass Toy Story 4. It's still miles behind F&F6,7 and 8.

 

The other openers were poor, but they took away enough screen and interest to make all the classic summer holdovers (FFH, MIB6, TS4) totally collapse. Teen Spirit did particularly bad.

 

Next weekend we have IT 2. The first had a 6.48M OW (2nd highest of the 2017-18 season, higher than IW) and ended up with 14.39M, an unbelievable run for a horror movie (just like in many other countries). I see this opening in the 4/5M range and finishing between Green Book (10.1) and FFH (11.75).

First day below 1M for TLK, but it's still a pretty damn good day. It has now passed 4 million admissions (4.064.766) and is now just a few hours away from beating Endgame (4.098.361). In gross it's still 3 millions behind, so that will happen on Thursday or, more likely, on Friday.

Another great day for the King, sub-2% drop, a much better hold than Angel and H&S.

So, once taken into account the SIAE correction (+5% or so), LK is passing Inside Out as the 2nd most attended movie of the decade sometimes today.

Speaking of Inside Out, the fact it's the second (soon to be third) most attended movie of the decade is probably the thing Italy should be more proud of in this 21st century.

The Lion King with the second best hold in the top 10, behind Teen Spirit's +7%. Along with Italian movie 5 è il Numero Perfetto, they're the only movies that increased over Tuesday.

The reason of the lack of increases is that some middle schools started yesterday. 90% of the schools, though, will start between next Wednesday and the Monday after (11th/16th of the month). So expect a strong Monday hold for Simba next Monday, too.

Weekend forecast

IT 2 opened in October with 1.2M, for a 6.5M weekend and 875K admissions in 650 screens. The second chapter is released in 850 screens, but it doesn't seem to have the same kind of anticipation. Being released two weeks after the second biggest Hollywood event of this century surely doesn't help.

Still, weather should get worse over the weekend, so that will limit the damage.

I'm projecting a very good hold for the King considering this is the last weekend of summer holidays for kids and, as already mentioned, it's a rainy one too. 0.65 Thu/ 0.70 Fri / 0.95 Sat and 1.5 Sun is my guess - but I wouldn't rule out a 4M+ weekend (which would actually put a 40M total back in play).

 

Keep in mind that we don't have any presales here, so the forecast is merely an educated guess based on experience.

Oddly enough, IT 2 may even outopen the first chapter and beat its total gross. Its OD is 16% higher and with rain coming as soon as today it won't be too hard for it to get a Thu-to-weekend multipliers a little above 4x. Can't believe I'm saying this, but the market must be in good shape  if it can sustain a potential 2M+ admissions movie after a record-breaking 5.5M one.

The King dropped more than expected, but it can easily recover. When you post such big numbers, Thursday is not your key day (as last week showed).

Angel Has Fallen held pretty well, while Mio Fratello Ricorre i Dinosauri didn't live up to expectations (it's similar to Wonder, which was a huge success here, higher than Jumanji and Jurassic World 2).

IT 2 dropped a little too much, and may come closer than expected to my forecast.

The Lion King not only surpassed Endgame in total gross, but it did so with a very good Friday rise, helped by bad weather.

Solid also for Angel Has Fallen, 50% 2nd weekend drop avoided with ease. It may even beat London's 2.8M total, though I wouldn't bet on it.

I had a huge expectation from Hellboy 3 movie to come in the top 20 list. But the movie comes after 90.

I don't know how anyone could expect a minor sh movie sandwiched between Shazam and Endgame to gross 7.5M or more (about the gross needed to get into the top 20), which would be basically on par with the average gross of non-Avengers MCU movies.

IT 2 was really tricky it seems, didn't expect it to be so frontloaded on a rainy FSS after an OD on a sunny Thursday. Barring a surge today, it should open around 5M, maybe a bit more. That would be down 20%+ from the first.

Pretty damn good for Angel Has Fallen. Its chances of overtaking London (2.8M) keep increasing.

And the Lion King...is the third Hollywood movie of all time behind the two Camerons in the official charts (those that only use incomplete numbers) and soon to beat itself in the complete charts. The 5M admission barrier will be passed either tomorrow or the day after.

The King back on top!

Its Sunday surge was strong enough to officially make it become the third Hollywood movie ever in total gross. Reaching that goal was always a strong possibility for the latest Disney live action, but to do so as soon as its third weekend and with a Sunday that blockbusters often hope to reach on OW is incredible.

That said I still don't believe it's going to reach the 40M mark. First because school start this week; second, because late legs in Italy are often very weak; third because next weekend is turning sunny again,

 

IT 2 had a sub-5M debut, pretty crazy after that insane 1.4M OD. 2M admissions isn't going to happen, especially since ticket prices are so damn high.

The weekend was up 87.27% from the same weekend last year. 2019's lead on 2018 has now reached 13.81%.

The lead keeps increasing, and a 20% gain over last year now looks quite possible. Among 10M+ contenders we have:

* Once Upon a Time in Hollywood > very likely, probably a 12M final gross

* Joker > needs to do 20% better than Venom, so chances are there

* Maleficent 2 > 80% chance; the first did 14M - and it's a Disney film starring Angelina Jolie and a princess

* Frozen 2 > well...

* Star Wars: TROS > this may drop from TLJ, but can't go that low - so another lock

* Pinocchio > released on Christmas Day and starring Benigni - a wildcard

 

IT 2 opened right were I expected it to open (665K admissions and a pretty damn high ATP), but it's hard not to be disappointed after that 1.4M OD. That OD was a 16% improvement over the first IT, but the whole OW is down 23%. Legs should be weak (the first did a bit more than 2.2x) but enough to push its total in the double digit.

 

The Lion King is 50K away from 5M admissions. Endgame destroyed.

 

Angel Has Fallen is holding surprisingly well. Passing London is very likely at this point. Great legs for Hobbs & Shaw too - just like with TS4 they make the performance look less embarassing.

 

Italian releases are a joke. 99% of them fail to do decent numbers, and every time they open they just kill the other local movies' legs.

 

This week, a bunch of minor movies open: Angry Birds 2, Late Night, Vox Lux (a bit late...), Good Boys and Tolkien. Along with the good weather coming back, they'll kill the smaller holdovers.

Pretty good Monday drop for IT 2. Its goal is to get to 7M (or very close to that) by tomorrow. That would lock a 10+ finish.

The Lion KIng has its first normal weekday, a 60%+ decrease from last Monday, due to most schools starting either tomorrow or the day after. I'm expecting it to drop all the weekdays and get below 150K on Thursday.

And the documentary Apollo 11 - one of the usual 3-day (Mon/Tue/Wed) events - opens in the podium.

Edit: And in case you're wondering, yes...the #10 title is the 1969 film starring Peter Fonda.
