Quite a disappointing rise for The Mule.

But then again, not too surprising. In fact, Dragon 3 should take the weekend top spot again thanks to evening attendance being deflated by Sanremo, a singing competition that is followed on TV by 1/6 of the population on weekdays and 1/5 on Saturday. Since I watch TV mainly for films, I didn't take this factor into consideration yesterday.

Creed II is on course for one of the worst multipliers ever for a film opening above 500K admissions.

 

Oh, and look at who's back in the 10th spot.

Solid increases all around (okay, coming from a very weak Friday, but still...).

The Favourite still in the top 10 despite receiving a pitiful number of showings in a limited amount of theaters. Too bad theaters already cut in half its showtimes on weekend #2. Mia needs like a 200K Sunday if it wants to beat The Grinch among recent family releases. Unlikely. 6M is now out of question.

 

Drops from previous Saturday:

Dragon 3 > -42.5%

Green Book > -33% (mediocre IM for it, way lower than the superb one it managed last weekend)

Creed II > -69.5% (likely to finish with a sub-2x multiplier)

Il Primo Re > -53%

Hannah Grace > -57%

Mia > -69.5% (ouch!)

Second Act > -66.5%

The Favourite > -67.5%

 

Sat-to-Sat drops are quite bigger than the Thu-to-Thu ones, and since there's no opener on Friday part of the difference should be indeed attributed to the TV show of Sanremo.

So after all those Sanremo talks, the weekend behaved in line with my initial forecast. The Sunday bumps for most adult movies (+20/30%) clearly show that the TV event clearly had an effect on adult movies on Friday and Saturday, and that there was some serious recovery afterwards.

2M+ weekend for both The Mule (#1) and 10 Giorni Senza Mamma (#2).

Mia rose by more than 100%, but I'm afraid that's not enough for it to overtake The Grinch, which would have been one hell of a shocker.

Remi spends its only day in the top 10. There won't be another one.

The weekend is down a whooping 17% from last year, when Fifty Shades Freed opened close to 6M euros. Year-to-year, 2019 is still 1% above 2018 through the same period.

 

The Mule did pretty well. The opning is on par with Sully's (2.2M OW for a 6.9M total) and more than 80% higher than 15:17 to Paris (1.2M). Considering the reception is good, that there isn't much competition next weekend and that the opning is probably slightly subdued, I'm predicting it to beat Sully, even though just barely.

 

Decent for the usual (and useless) Italian comedy. Its total will likely be in the mediocre range though, as there are just too many local products, all similar to each other, to develop some legs.

 

Average as expected for Dragon 3, should be a close race between it and Venom (currently #9 of the season with 8.5M euros).

 

Green Book did very well, especially given the competition from Eastwood and the weakened evenings.

Creed II's legs have been pathetic. I don't remember the last time a movie opening above 3 millions on a non-Holiday weekend failed to reach a 2x multiplier. Just like FB2, it failed to attract casual moviegoers, but at least Scamander was able to get a multiplier above 2.1x.

Mia got mauled more than expected - it's the "week 4" rule, baby.

Remì is one heck of a failure, it was even released in a respectable number of theaters. It will lose 4/5 of its showings on Thursday.

 

Outside the top 10:

* Bohemian Rhapsody is now done, but it remained in the top 12 by beating the local flop of Copperman (by like 900 admissions). Unless it gets a bump with Oscars, it will miss the top 10 of all time (by Cinetel incomplete numbers); the 10th spot is now occupied by Da Vinci Code (28.678.463 euros) and it's hard for BR to get 440K more off a 170K weekend so late in its run. Even this phenomen wasn't immune to the most strict rule in the Italian box office: as soon as you leave the top 5/6 of the weekend, your run is over.

* Ralph is #18 with a 46K gross, and a 10.8M total; atrocious post-holiday legs, but a very good result overall

* Aquaman out of the top 20, it will finish 1% under Ralph (but close to 10% below in admissions)

 

 

Next weekend:

> Alita: Battle Angel > no idea what to expect from this one, I only hope it goes as high as possible; that said, I'm afraid even Ready Player One's 4.8M total might look optimistic

> The Queen's Corgi > France/GB co-production, animated movie; should get around 1M total

Creed. 2 legs were bad but the movie reached 1 million admissions at least which is great. How italians rate the movie ? It's rate 7.6/10 on imdb.

Creed II has been a success when we look at the movie's total (which will be above 7 millions, when expectations were around 5-6M).

Its legs are likely due to the movie being very fanbase driven, as the ratings for it are solid (3/5 on Mymovies by audience, 3.5/5 by critics).

Local romantic comedy Un'Avventura failed big time, the couples who chose to go to the theaters on Valentine's Day clearly picked 10 Giorni Senza Mamma over any other (+50% from Wed, compared to the +10/-25% range of the others).

 

Alita just didn't gain enough interest unfortunately. As I feared, Ready Player One's 4.8M total is too optimistic, and a dull finish around 3/3.5 millions appears to be more likely.

It's not necessarily a bad thing when moviegoers focus on 3 movies, but when the 3 movies are holdovers that barely combine for 500K, it's embarassing.

Bad for Alita, very bad for Crucifixion, absolutely atrocious for Un'Avventura (for the joy of 10 Giorni Senza Mamma).

HTTYD3 is down 60% week-to-week, despite being out only for 15 days and only competing with Rex (not exactly a big deal).

The weekend is down 39% from the same weekend last year. Year-to-year, 2019 is now trailing 2018 by 5.77%.

 

Aside from Green Book's hold, nothing went right this weekend. Alita failed with an opening in Ghost in the Shell's territory (2.2M finish), The Mule dropped relatively hard, Un'Avventura (local romantic comedy) failed so miserably that 10 Giorni Senza Mamma was the only option for those Italian moviegoers that have the stomach to eat this homemade s**t.

Dragon 3 collapsed on its 3rd weekend for unknown reasons and is now guaranteed to fail to get into the top 10 of the year. My initial prediction of a 7M total turned out to be correct, but I'd never thought it could be the case after an OW above 3.1 millions.

 

Outside the top 10:

Creed II #11 with 145K > 7.14M total, it will stop at 7.3M - awful legs, very good total

The Favourite managed to drop around 50% (a big achievement when you were in the bottom of the top 10 the previous weekend); it will finish at 2.6/2.7M, but it would have been a bigger hit if not for the idiotic way theaters handled its release (very few showtimes as soon as week 2, in prohibitive slots - often at 10:45pm the day before a workday).

Bohemian Rhapsody is doing all it can to beat Da Vinci Code for a spot in the top 10 of all time (Cinetel numbers): a drop in the low 40's for a 99K weekend and a total of 28.40 millions; 280K left to overtake the Hanks

Mia collapsed one more time, it will finish between 5.6M and 5.7M.

 

This Thursday:

Modalità Aereo (Italian comedy) > it has some moderately popular actors and it has been well advertised, good chance of a #1 placement

Lego Movie 2 > the first Lego did a decent 3.4M, than Lego Batman did 2.4 and Ninjago got a laughable 780K total; I see this chapter opening between 0.5 and 1.0 millions and finish just between Batman and Ninjago

Cold Pursuit > should do well, Liam Neeson is popular here; a spot in the podium is very likely

The Front Runner > in line with LM2 perhaps

Mary Poppins, Ralph and Aquaman are dead, they will add just a few K's to their totals.

Hotel Transylvania 3 still the 2nd movie of the season by admissions.

Now that Dragon 3 has been falling like a rock, these rankings may remain unchanged until mid-April (as I'm pretty sure Dumbo will enter the list).

Captain Marvel is the only title that could do it before, but when Black Panther only does 7 millions and the previous superheroine film (Wonder Woman) can't even reach 4 millions, it's hard to forecast a big success.

It's absurd (especially for the way the Italian market works) to see that the 4th grosser of the year is a November release.

At this point, a situation where most of the top 10 is concentrated around the 7M mark is very likely: Creed II and BR are basically done, Greek Book will make 6.5+ with another strong hold, HTTYD3 will certainly finish between 7.0 and 7.5, 10 Giorni Senza Mamma and The Mule both look like 7M (+/-0.5) grosser and Captain Marvel could easily fall in the 6/7M range.

Shows how the market can hardly produce a major hit: loads of 5M+ grossers but not a single real breakout.

A scenario that is very similar to Germany's, although Italy had at least the mammoth success of Bohemian Rhapsody to interrupt the borefest.

3rd place for the nth art-based 3-day "event" Leonardo Cinquecento (a new documentary about a famous artist has been released from Monday to Wednesday for months, and it's of course something that works in Italy).

Alita flat from Monday - not good. I'll see it for the 3rd time today.
