Box office hurt once againby good weather. As a result, even Dumbo dropped from Saturday, which is very rare for a kids film.

The comparison with Cinderella is really unkind: she had a 51% jump on Sunday for 2.4M in 24 hours. Dumbo's Sunday is also about on par with Jungle Book despite the former leading by 35% on Saturday.

Weekend was down 3.2% from the same weekend last year. 2019 losing to 2018 by 10.1%.

 

Considering the general overseas result, one could think Dumbo's result is quite good (less than 20% below I2's and CM's OW, 10% below Venom's). Well, it isn't.

 

Alice in Wonderland > 11.1M OW // 30.4M total (#1 non-Cameron Hollywood movie of all time when using Cinetel's incomplete numbers - otherwise, it's The Lion King at 33+)

Oz the Great and Powerful > 2.9M OW // 8.1M total

Maleficent > 5.0M OW // 14.0M total

Cinderella > 5.1M OW // 15.0M total

The Jungle Book > 3.0M OW // 10.4M total

Beauty and the Beast > 6.9M OW // 20.5M total

(Nutcracker > 4.3M OW // 9.4M total)

Mary Poppins > 2.7M OW // 12.1M total

 

Dumbo was able to beat only 3 openings, 2 if you excluded the obviously deflated one of Mary Poppins (opening right before Christmas).

At the end, it will likely only beat Oz, as Jungle Book managed a very strong multiplier thanks to a jaw-dropping 10% drop on its non-holiday 2nd weekend, something Dumbo won't be able to manage). It still has a chance of passing Nutcracker, but it needs some bad weather asap.

Also, it doesn't help the fact it got a TERRIBLE weekend IM (Thu-to-weekend) of 9x. Beauty and the Beast had close to 8x, but that one was highly anticipated (840K OS vs Dumbo's 370K).

 

Also, Monday numbers are in and it's not like grosses are boosted that much by CinemaDays:

Other than Dumbo, the only good performer is Five Feet Apart. Unfortunately for it, this is not North America, so its days of good holds won't last more than a few more days.

 

Opening this week:

Shazam! is looking at a sub-5M gross; it's the only Wednesday opener of the week

Us may do relatively well, maybe in line with Halloween (1+ OW, 3+ finish); not sure it can reach The Nun's height (5M total)

The Book Club will find an audience as a decent part of moviegoers are very attracted by big leading names

And the usual bunch of useless Italian products.

 

Dumbo should repeat at the top with 2M+; Shazam close to 2M 5-day, 1+ for Us and 1- for Book Club.

Shazam! failed. Less than half of Dumbo, not even able to double Five Feet Apart's 2nd Wednesday. Sub-5M total is now locked, sub-4M likely, and even sub-3M has got a chance. Not unexpected at all.

Captain Marvel is 220K away from the 10M mark. It will be a struggle.

Shazam! with the best hold o.O Pretty sure this means many people didn't know it was coming out one day in advance and thought it was just the usual Thursday release.

 

Us just opened like an average horror. And was even boosted by CinemaDays.

 

(Inflated) holds from last Thursday:

Dumbo > -9%

Five Feet Apart > +9%

Bentornato Presidente > +5%

Captain Marvel > -38%

The Professor and the Madman > -30%

 

As usual the leading title get the best holds. Dumbo actually looks to be in the better position among them, as unlike them its IM last weekend was really dreadful.

The good news is that weather is turning pretty bad these days, We could see a recovery for Shazam! and some nice holds for Dumbo, 5 Feet (again!) and Bentornato Presidente.

Some are reporting that the opening of Us is incorrect, and that due to reporting errors it's actually 100K, which wouldn't be bad. Let's see how it holds today to see who's right.

 

No data available for Endgame presales. The most reliable box office source in Italy (BoxOfficeBenful) confirms there's no number about them, and that they couldn't find any data for SW7 either.

However, at the moment, the situation looks pretty crazy for the 24th (OD), considering Italy is such a provincial country when it comes to these things.

With almost 3 weeks left, the first showing (4:30pm) is 85% sold out already at Uci Marcon (5/10 miles from Venice). In the same theater, the two other showings have weaker percentages of seats sold (50% the second, 15% the third), but the evening is nuts, as the first showing after dinner (9pm) is basically sold out (95%) and the following one isn't too far away at 75%. The situation is more polarized at Space Cinema Silea, where afternoon showings are 30/35% full on average, but the evening ones only have 10/15 seats left in the more unpleasant places.

 

5-day opening will exceed 10 millions. The Raimi Spider Man should finally fall as the highest grossing SH movie.

The presales in my city (Verona) are very high. The preview is sold out at 90%, the day after the afternoon screenings are at 25% while those at night over 50, but both growing

Thursday basically acts like a Saturday/Sunday. IW did 1.7M on Saturday and 2.0M on Sunday, adter burning 5M+ worth of demand in the previous days.

2M+ is locked.

 

Freaking Ralph 2 did 1.6M on its holiday opening day. The heck.
