This end was sad, I didn't imagine Arthur could die I wasn't particularly surprised by the ending. He got killed by Modred in the Legends so I wasn't particularly surprised that it happened. The Legend behind King Arthur is that he's the once and future king of Albion. He's fulfilled the once part because he died, and the throne has passed on to Guinevere, and then etc. up until modern day Queen Elizabeth II. Legend has it that in Albion (Island of Great Britain's) darkest hour Arthur will once again return and fulfill the future king part of the policy, and in doing so leading Albion to greatest and eternal peace. [Kinda like the Book of Revelations, but I do like the Arthur version much better] The shot with modern day Merlin implies that Merlin's still waiting for Arthur's return so that he can fulfill his prophecy.
