ozu's best, and utterly shattering.

"isn't life disappointing?" one of the most heartbreaking films ever is a complex and subtle drama that details the familial generation gap that inevitably grows wider due to simple personality differences, and the often unbearable emptiness and loneliness of old age. if only one thing could be improved, it would be the performances that at times seem a little staged, due to the actors and cameras 'taking turns' so to speak. ultimately deserving of its reputation.
