GREECE: 'Inside Out 2' scores BIGGEST second weekend for animated film; soon to become biggest animated film of all time

Off topic but what are you expecting for Joker 2 and Gladiator 2 since both the originals were massive here (~900k admits). Similar admits to Avatar 2?

I think for Joker 2 it's a given that it will at least make Avatar 2 admissions. The first movie was a phenomenon, and not that long ago. For Gladiator who nows. The huge gap and no Russell Crowe might as well turn it into another big budget movie that does just fine here. But in any case for both it would be really hard to come anywhere close to 900.000. You need a lot more than good reception and nostalgia for that.

I'm notoriously bad at making predictions, especially months ahead of a movie's release, but I would tend to agree with @Joel M that Joker 2 is a safer bet (at least on par with Avatar 2), whereas Gladiator 2 is a total wildcard.

The two-week Easter break started off with a spectacular opening by Greek horror film 'Don't Open the Door'. Its creation and execution was entirely in the hands of the team behind the extremely popular (among young Greeks) YouTube channel Unboxholics. The film achieved the biggest post-pandemic opening for a Greek production and the biggest opening weekend of 2024 so far. Unfortunately though, the massive wave of enthusiasm died down very quickly as Easter approached. Films generally drop sharply on Easter weekend, but the eye-popping 94% drop of 'Don't Open the Door' couldn't have been the result of the usual Easter-related cinema closures alone (most venues shut down on Good Friday and Saturday). The film proved to be completely irrelevant to mainstream Greek audiences, outside of the Unboxholics' core fanbase. The word-of-mouth was not positive at all, leading to one of the worst sophomore drops in history. Another testament to the underlying causes of this debacle is the muted increase during the post-Easter weekend, at a meager 34%. Most other comps sold at least double the tickets on the post-Easter weekend.

Biggest sophomore drop for each year's biggest pre-Easter newcomer
Ranking Title Opening weekend % sophomore drop Year
1 Don’t Open the Door 81.666 -93.9% 2024
2 Furious 7 137.711 -90.0% (est.) 2015
3 Rio 2 20.539 -88.0% (est.) 2014
4 Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore 25.302 -87.4% 2022
5 The Curse of La Llorona 13.081 -85.8% 2019
6 Iron Man 3 66.278 -81.3% 2013
7 The Super Mario Bros. Movie 44.811 -80.8% 2023
8 The Jungle Book 20.488 -79.6% 2016
9 Ready Player One 15.183 -77.0% 2018
10 The Boss Baby 23.936 -75.8% 2017

In other news, 'Kung Fu Panda 4' will soon cross its final milestone, 150K admissions, having become the second-biggest film of the 'Kung Fu Panda' franchise. It is also currently the second biggest film of the year, behind 'Dune 2'. Meanwhile, 'The Garfield Movie' scored first place on the post-Easter weekend thanks to the precipitous fall of 'Don't Open the Door' and the under-performance of 'Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes'. Speaking of which, this reboot franchise never really picked up steam in Greece, but this entry has reached new lows:

Planet of the Apes (reboot franchise)
Title National OW Release date Total admissions Multiple
Rise of the Planet of the Apes 16,644 Thu 4 Aug 11 62,351 3.75
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes 18,595 Thu 17 Jul 14 69,418 3.73
War for the Planet of the Apes 15,431 Thu 13 Jul 17 51,937 3.37
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes 10,183 Thu 9 May 24

The post-Easter weekend failed to achieve a significant boost compared to Easter due to the Eurovision Song Contest's second semi-final and final, which fell on Thursday and Saturday respectively. For many films, Friday was the busiest day of the weekend. Finally, it's worth keeping an eye on the re-release of the 'Harry Potter' movies as part of Village Cinemas' Epic Movie Nights.

The coming weekend, four films will enter the ring, but I doubt that anything interesting will happen:

  • Crime drama 'Damaged', starring Samuel L. Jackson
  • Thriller drama 'Asphalt City', starring Sean Penn
  • Horror film 'The Strangers: Chapter 1'
  • Dystopian action comedy 'Boy Kills World'

Cumulative weekend admissions fell below 50K admissions once again (49,429) in what has become a deeply troubling trend. The dismal results of April and May mean that 2024 has now fallen behind 2023 at the same point in time, trailing it by 2%. Clearly, the consequences of the Hollywood actors' and writers' strike are now laid bare for everyone to see. New openers performed horrendously, with only one film, 'The Strangers: Chapter 1' opening above 5,000 admissions. 'Garfield' stayed on top for a second weekend purely because of the underperformance of every other film and not because of a particularly notable box office run. 'Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes' is basically guaranteed to end up as the lowest grossing film of the reboot franchise, while Greek horror film 'Don't Open the Door' remains in free fall. Finally, 'Kung Fu Panda 4' is closing in on the 150K-admission milestone and will probably match its immediate predecessor's 3.5x multiplier. Another batch of uninteresting newcomers will arrive next weekend. Ttfn 'til then!

The weekend sank to new depths, with only 42,281 admissions having been sold over the 4-day period. It is the worst weekend cume for 2024 outside of Easter. 'The Garfield Movie' achieved a third weekend at the top and was involved in another photo finish, as it earned only 660 admissions more than second place. At the beginning of this month, on Easter weekend, 'Garfield' was involved in a much closer photo finish, where only 56 admissions separated it from 'Don't Open the Door', which was the weekend winner. I'd forgotten to mention it at the time, but it was the third closest photo finish of the last 15 years. Back to this weekend's results: 'Freud's Last Session' was the only newcomer to score more than 5K admissions. On another note, we've seen a small yet steady stream of 'Harry Potter' fans flock to the back-to-back re-releases of the series' films, organised by Village Cinemas under the banner of Epic Movie Nights. Next week sees the release of 'Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga'. The film is attempting to duplicate the financial and critical success that its predecessor achieved nearly a decade ago. In Greece, 'Mad Max: Fury Road' sold 31,196 admissions during its opening weekend, back in mid-May 2015. Given the desolate state of the box office, anything above 20K admissions during its opening frame will be seen as a success.

The month of June started off with two big disappointments and an underwhelming weekend total (58,762 admissions). Firstly, 'Furiosa' came nowhere near its predecessor, debuting with an abysmal weekend cume that barely reached five figures. 'Mad Max: Fury Road' had opened with triple the number of tickets back in 2015. Furthermore, Yorgos Lanthimos's 'Kinds of Kindness' failed to replicate the success of 'Poor Things', despite also starring Emma Stone among others. These two underperformances have destroyed any hopes of a busy early summer period. The results are even scarier as we move down the list, since three films registered three-figure weekend cumes. 'Kung Fu Panda 4' crossed 150K admissions, its final milestone.

Lanthimos-directed Emma Stone-starring absurdist dark comedy 'Kinds of Kindness' enjoyed a decent 25% hold, while 'Furiosa' plummeted by more than 60%. Interestingly, 'Garfield' saw a minor uptick ahead of what is likely gonna be a sharp drop, in light the arrival of 'Inside Out 2'. Overall, the weekend was as quiet as the last one (57,267 admissions sold by all films in total). 'Bad Boys: Ride or Die' opened to slightly less than its predecessor ('Bad Boys for Life'), which had managed 11,878 admissions in January 2020. The re-release of the 'Harry Potter' franchise has seen a small yet steady decline with each new entry, but I wonder whether the last one, to be released on Thursday, will see a small boost.

Holy mother of monkey milk! Disney-Pixar's 'Inside Out 2' achieved the unthinkable: it broke the 93,000-admission animated opening-weekend record, held by 'Ice Age 2' for the last 18 years. Obviously this means it is the biggest opening weekend ever for Pixar and it is a whopping 56.3% higher than the opening of the original 'Inside Out', released back in September 2015.

10 Frozen II 70,587 Thu 28 Nov 19 323,084 4.58

* 'Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs' was released on Monday and brought in 110,655 admissions by its first Sunday. The 80,337-admission figure is for Thursday to Sunday.

The sky is the limit for 'Inside Out 2'. The biggest animated film in Greece is presumed to be the original 'Lion King' from 1994, with approximately 390,000 admissions. With virtually no competition for the next couple of months, I can't imagine 'Inside Out 2' missing the 300K-admission milestone, but it's hard to say how much further it'll go. Other high-profile Pixar films released in June achieved 3.5-4.5x multiples. This gives us quite a wide range for 'Inside Out 2's' final total: 340,000 to 440,000 admissions. Even at the lower end of that spectrum, it would still become the biggest Pixar film of all time, beating 2003's 'Finding Nemo' (340,731 admissions). At the higher end, it would presumptively become the first animated film to ever exceed 400K admissions (I say presumptively, since data for films before 2003 are scarce).

Overall, cumulative admissions for the weekend box office ascended to 139,729, making it the busiest weekend since mid-January, when Lanthimos's 'Poor Things' was soaring. 'Bad Boys: Ride or Die' had a decent hold, but still has a long way to go if it wants to beat its immediate predecessor, 'Bad Boys for Life', which ended its run with 44,142 admissions in 2020. Village Cinema's special event branded 'Epic Movie Nights' brought the re-release of another epic franchise to its conclusion with 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2'. The film saw a small uptick in admissions compared to the re-release of the last few entries of the franchise, but it still didn't manage to beat 'The Sorcerer's Stone' or 'Prisoner of Azkaban'. It was crickets for the remainder of the Top 10.

That's a very impressive result for Inside Out 2.  At the same time though, I'm surprised by how weak animated movies perform in Greece compared to other markets.  In South Korea, where a lower % of the population are children than Greece, Frozen 1 landed at the #3 Hollywood attendance record while Frozen 2 is at #2, barely behind Avengers: Endgame.  Meanwhile, no animated film in Greece since 2003 has even reached half of Joker!

It's out of this world. Disney-Pixar's animated sequel 'Inside Out 2' dropped a mere 4% to register the biggest second weekend ever for an animated film. Its sophomore frame was so big that, if it was an opening weekend, it would still have broken the animated opening-weekend record. There is no doubt we're talking about insanely high numbers. It was also one of the smallest sophomore drops ever recorded for an opening of this magnitude. Here are some animated comps (it's not an exhaustive list, it's not a Top-10 list):

Title Second weekend % drop Total by second Sunday
Inside Out 2 93,965 -4.2% 276,195
Ice Age: The Meltdown* 68,100 -26.8% 181,500
Minions 63,470 -30.8% 177,862
Frozen II 54,986 -22.1% 144,739
Inside Out 52,231 -16.8% 152,300
Despicable Me 3 50,095 -39.2% 179,544
Finding Dory 48,624 -46.2% 184,679
The Smurfs 43,880 -38.7% 135,300
Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs 43,360 -46.0% 194,975**
Tangled 41,500 -46.3% 124,133
A Christmas Carol 34,775 -51.9% 144,729
Ice Age: Continental Drift 33,885 -50.0% 147,375
Ice Age: Collision Course 28,512 -52.7% 127,557

* The figures for 'Ice Age 2' are all my own estimates, based on extrapolation from official admission totals for Athens only.

** 'Ice Age 3' was released on a Monday; therefore, this figure is a 14-day total, unlike the remaining figures, which cover 11 days

As one can see, not only is 'Inside Out 2's' second weekend far ahead of its comps, but its 11-day total is also miles ahead of the closest competitor: it obliterated 'Ice Age 2's' 68.1K-admission second-weekend record and it also beat 'Finding Dory's' 185K-admission 11-day total and 'Ice Age 3's' 195K-admission 14-day total. Including the admissions sold on the Whit Monday public holiday, 'Inside Out 2' is at 297,169 admissions and is only days away from beating its predecessor's lifetime total (310,104 admissions). Needless to say that this is totally unprecedented for an animated film in Greece. It is effectively guaranteed to become the most-attended animated film of all time as soon as next weekend, beating 1994's 'The Lion King' (390K admissions) and 2009's 'Ice Age 3' (384.8K admissions). These are 30-year and 15-year records (for all animated and computer-animated films respectively), making the feat of 'Inside Out 2' even more shocking. What is the ceiling for 'Inside Out 2's' total, you may ask. If it has 50% weekly drops from now on (worst-case scenario), then it would reach 530K admissions. A more realistic estimate of its total, based on 40% weekly drops, is 645K admissions. A very optimistic lifetime total, based on 30% weekly drops, would be 765K admissions. All these numbers seem astronomical and therefore very difficult to believe, but the lack of any serious animated competition for the next two months ('Despicable Me 4' is to be released in late August), makes these estimates even more realistic.

Overall, business for the conventional 4-day weekend was on par with last weekend, reaching 135,706 admissions. That number went up to 163,229 when including the Whit Monday public holiday. Unfortunately, none of the newcomers or the other holdovers managed to sell more than 10K admissions. The box office of the last 12 months has depended almost exclusively on uber-blockbusters (400K+ admissions): 'Barbie', 'Oppenheimer', Greek film 'Murderess', 'Poor Things' and now 'Inside Out 2', while nothing else has managed to reach the blockbuster milestone (200K admissions). Next week, I will provide a round-up for 2024's first half.

Do you know what the biggest 2nd weekends were for any film? Because I have to imagine Inside Out 2 placed on that list as well

Very good question. Unfortunately, I can't provide an exhaustive list for second weekends that goes all the way down to 'Inside Out 2'. It's definitely not in the Top 10 and probably not in the Top 20 either.
