Eddie the Eagle is proof that a generic template can give winning results. It does absolutely nothing new for the sports movie genre, but still is a load of fun. Taron Egerton is unrecognizable in the title role and Hugh Jackman gives his first real performance in a while. The movie's worth seeing just for those two roles. That said, Eddie the Eagle is fascinating just because it takes ski-jumping, an inherently un-cinematic sport, and makes it thrilling. You feel the joy and the pain that comes with ski-jumping, and it's really quite impressive, especially for such a relatively new director. The score by Matthew Margeson also utilizes some sweet synths and adds to the time period. Eddie the Eagle is a very fun sports movie, although it fails to exceed the genre's limitations. B

Watched this (as well as Whiskey Tango Foxtrot) in a hotel room with relatives in town and was the perfect movie to watch for such an occasion. Does nothing to reinvent the heartwarming sports movie but gets by on the terrific performances from Taron Egerton and Hugh Jackman. B
