The film is the highest-grossing romantic comedy of all time adjusted for inflation, at $364m domestic. It was released at the height of Julia Roberts' popularity, making $178.4m domestic off of an $11.3m opening weekend; however, perhaps the most amazing thing about it is its overseas run, in which it obtained $285m and $463.4m worldwide on a $14m budget.

This movie was her first hit. The height of her popularity was like late 90s, not this

Kind of disappointing that rom-coms aren't made anymore. It was the path for actresses to make the A-list. 

 

Pretty Woman feels very trope-y watching it now since every romcom in the past 25 years has used the plot or at least the tropes of this movie, but it was actually the originator for a lot of them.

What's most shocking about its massive numbers (particularly overseas) is that this is an R-rated film.  Sure it's cute and fluffy but it is an R-rated movie about a prostitute and that restricts your audience.
