Crunching the Numbers: Third Time's The Charm - It's The Final Countdown!

Recommended Posts

He’s flung right down the dragon’s throat but gets stuck halfway, blocking the pipe where the dragon’s flames would’ve spurted out. Unable to set the plane ablaze, the dragon continues its pursuit regardless.

Though the dragon could set Louie on fire, and once he is burnt to ashes then set the plane on fire.

Louie: I DIDN’T THINK THIS THROOOOOOU

No shit

The Number One Dime

Has a bit too much tonal whiplash going on, and then kinda swerves towards a pretty dark for a PG film bit with children being killed into gold, zombies trying to tear Scrooge apart, Glomgold's sacrifice, etc. It gets wrapped a bit quickly and neatly once the time travel actually happens. A little mixed on that.

So is it as good as the first? No, it's not. Is it still pretty good? Yes. Tennant remains a highlight and Magica is a very good villain. I think the film had a the right idea in trying to spread things around the triplets, though it seems that Dewey got the short end of the stick. Some of the pacing is a little wonky but for the most part it remains a very energetic and dynamic drive forward. Just needed a little more consistency in approach, since some of the best highlights are the wacky cartoon action setpieces, such as the opening Beagle Assault tracking shot.

7.7/10

Slight thoughts about a couple issues

Spoiler

The film is fat around the middle, and some of the more basic action scenes could easily have dealt with less description to help with the word count. Kira didn't have as much an impact as the pre-read hype seemed to be giving her. She was more of the comic-relief sidekick to Joel's straight-man.

The Valden stuff definitely felt more like sequel bait with that plot hook going dead a bit over halfway through and then Joel leaving to find a cure. The build-up to his character from the beginning exposition made it seem like he was going to have a bigger role than essentially an extended cameo.

All fair points.

The various issues probably dragged it down about half a point. The extensive world-building was excellent, Packer is a great villain, MEW Mewed, and even with some padding and dead ends, the plot was very energetic and involving throughout.

After that behemoth I'm not gonna do any further reading until tomorrow. Will probably spend a little time later today going back to the Pillars third act for Spaghetti.
