Went into this film knowing absolutely nothing about it and came out feeling like it was money very well spent.  Superfly might not have a very original plot but then again, what Hollywood film does today?  But the execution of it is very well done.  This takes you into a world that most of us will never know.  Where money rains at every party and even though these characters live a life of privilege and insouciance, it could all end in an instant.  There's a lot of Goodfellas in this film and that is one of its strengths.  Trevor Jackson, who I've never heard of, lights up the screen.  He's a criminal and a gangster but he's smart about it.  He doesn't like violence and was taught that it is a last resort.  Violence only begets more violence.  He's also not greedy and wants to get out while he is still young and alive.  Things go south of course and then all fucking hell breaks loose.  It's a good story with great acting, some beautiful women and it's a gorgeous looking film.

Superfly works wonders as a B-movie. It’s got just the right amount of gritty action, cool dialogue, and badass moments. Jackson holds the movie down as a highly charismatic lead, and Mitchell, as usual, steals the show. Director X does a lot with his small budget, and although it shows often, the movie rarely doesn’t impress. That said, it’s overlong, particularly in its first act. There’s no need for this to be almost two hours long and even the really enjoyable third act doesn’t make you forget that. Still, Superfly is an explosion of style at the summer box office, proving you don’t need a big budget to give audiences a good time. C+
